In order to obtain the wave-making resistance of a ship, so-called the Neumann-Kelvin problem is solved numerically. For computing the Havelock source, which is the Green's function of the problem, we adopted the methods given by Newman(1987) for the term representing the local disturbance, and Baar and Price(1988) for the wave disturbance, respectively. In the numerical code we developed, the source strength is assumed as bilinear on each panel and continuous throughout the hull surface. The wave-making resistance is calculated using the algorithm of de Sendagorta and erases(1988), which makes use of the wave amplitude far downstream. The Wigley hull was chosen for the sample calculation, and our results showed a good agreement with other existing experimental and numerical results.

The ASTM test standard recommends the use of the compact tension specimen for creep crack growth rates measurement. In the creep crack growth rate test, the displacement rate due to creep is obtained by subtracting the contribution of elastic and plastic components from the total load line displacement rate based on displacement partitioning method fur determining $C^*-integral$, which involves Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) fitting procedures. This paper investigates the effect of the R-O fitting procedures on plastic displacement rate estimates in creep crack growth testing, via detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analyses of the standard compact tension specimen. Four different R-O fitting procedures are considered; (i) fitting the entire true stress-strain data up to the ultimate tensile strength, (ii) fitting the true stress-strain data from 0.1% strain to 0.8 of the true ultimate strain, (iii) fitting the true stress-strain data only up to 5% strain, and (iv) fitting the engineering stress-strain data. It is found that the last two procedures provide reasonably accurate plastic displacement rates and thus should be recommended in creep crack growth testing. Moreover, several advantages of fitting the engineering stress-strain data over fitting the true stress-strain data only up to 5% strain are discussed.
Electric machines such as motors which have rmving parts are designed for producing mechanical force or torque. The accurate calculations of electromagnetic force and torque are important in the design these machines. Electromagnetic force calculation method using the results of Finite Element Method(FEM) has been presented variously in 2-D problems. Typically the Maxwell's Stress Tensor method and the method of virtual work are used. The former calculates forces by integrating the surface force densities which can be expressed in terms of Maxwell Stress Tensor(MST), and the latter by differentiating the electromagnetic energy with respect to the virtual dis¬placement of rigid bodies of interest. In the problems including current source, magnetic vector potentials(MVP) have rmstly been used as unknown variables for field analysis by a numerical method; e. g. FEM. This paper, thus, introduces the two both methods using MVP in 3-D case. To verify the usefulness of presented methods, a solenoid model is chosen and analyzed by 3-D and axisymmetric FEM. It is found that the force calculation results are in good agreement for several mesh schemes.

In this study, notch defects are evaluated using fracture mechanics. To understand the effects of notch defects, FE analysis is conducted to predict the limit load and J-integral for middle-cracked and single-edge cracked plates with various sizes of notch under tension and bending. As the radius of the notch increases, the energy release rate also increases, although the limit load remains constant. The values of fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) of SM490A are determined for various notch radii through FE simulation instead of conducting an experiment. As the radius of the notch increases, the energy release rate also increases, together with a more significant increase in fracture toughness. To conclude, as the notch radius increases, the resistance to crack propagation also increases.
Concrete, a mixed material, has heterogeniety, anisotrophy and nonlinearity. Therefore, in its 'racture analysis, it is more reasonable to evaluate its fracture toughness by applying the concept of 'racture mechanics rather than the strength concept. Up to the present the concepts of fracture mechanics which were applied to concrete have been divided into two main classes. The one is the concept of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the other is the concept of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. But it has been pointed out that there are many problems and irrationalities in applying the concept of linear elastic fracture mechanics to concrete. In this study, the J -integral method and the COD method mainly used in the analysis of nonlinear fracture mechanics, were introduced and the three point bending test was carried out for investigating the effects of the variation of the maximum aggregate size and notch depth on the fracture behavior and the crack growth of concrete, and the relationships of fracture energy and crack opening displacement. According to the results of this study the more the maximum aggregate size and the notch depth increased, the more the nonlinearity of load-deflection behavior was remarkable. The increase of the coarse aggregate size created the more ductility of concrete. Thus concrete showed the more stable fracture. As for the path of the crack growth, the more the coarse aggregate size increased, the more it was irregulary deviated from the straight line but it was not almost affected by the variation of the notch depth. Also, the fracture energy increased according as the coarse aggregate size increased and the notch depth decreased.

Low-order panel methods are being used to design marine propellers. Since the potential value over each panel for these methods is assumed to be a constant, the accuracy of prediction is known to be limited. Therefore, a higher order boundary element method(HOBEM) has been studied to enhance the accuracy of prediction. In this paper, a HOBEM representing the body boundary surfaces and physical quantities by a 9-node Lagrangian shape function is employed to analyse the flow around marine propellers in steady potential flow. First, the numerical results for a circular wing with thickness variations are compared with Jordan's linear solution. Then, the computational results of two propellers(DTRC 4119 & DTRC 4842 propeller) are compared with the experimental and numerical results published. The pressure distribution on the surface of the propeller is also compared with experimental data.
As an alternative for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, we present a vorticity-based integro-differential formulation for vorticity, velocity and pressure variables. One of the most difficult problems encountered in the vorticity-based methods is the introduction of the proper value-value of vorticity or vorticity flux at the solid surface. A practical computational technique toward solving this problem is presented in connection with the coupling between the vorticity and the pressure boundary conditions. Numerical schemes based on an iterative procedure are employed to solve the governing equations with the boundary conditions for the three variables. A finite volume method is implemented to integrate the vorticity transport equation with the dynamic vorticity boundary condition . The velocity field is obtained by using the Biot-Savart integral derived from the mathematical vector identity. Green's scalar identity is used to solve the total pressure in an integral approach similar to the surface panel methods which have been well-established for potential flow analysis. The calculated results with the present mettled for two test problems are compared with data from the literature in order for its validation. The first test problem is one for the two-dimensional square cavity flow driven by shear on the top lid. Two cases are considered here: (i) one driven both by the specified non-uniform shear on the top lid and by the specified body forces acting through the cavity region, for which we find the exact solution, and (ii) one of the classical type (i.e., driven only by uniform shear). Secondly, the present mettled is applied to deal with the early development of the flow around an impulsively started circular cylinder.

Efforts are presently underway for developing an optimal design methodology for GEN-IV nuclear reactors based on target failure probabilities. A typical example is the system-based code, in which the results are represented in the form of partial safety factors (PSFs). Thus, a PSF is one of the crucial elements in either component design or integrity assessment based on target failure probabilities during the operation period. In the present study, a procedure for calculating the PSF of a circumferential through-wall cracked pipe based on the elastic-plastic crack initiation criterion is established, in which the importance of each input variable is assessed. Elastic-plastic J-integrals are calculated using the GE/EPRI and reference stress methods, and the PSF values are calculated using both first- and second-order reliability methods. Moreover, the effect of statistical distributions of assessment variables on the PSF is also evaluated.

The BVI(blade vortex interaction) noise Prediction has been one of the most challenging acoustic analyses in helicopter aeromechanical Phenomenon. It is well known high resolution airloads data with accurate tip vortex positions are necessary for the accurate prediction of this phenomenon. The truly unsteady time-marching free-wake method, which is able to capture the tip vortices instability in hover and axial flights, is expanded with the rotor flapping motion and trim routine to predict unsteady airloads in forward and descent flights. And Farassat formulation 1-A based on the FW-H equation is applied for the noise prediction considering the blade flapping motion. Main objective of this study is to validate the newly developed prediction code. To achieve the objective, the descent flight condition of AH-1 OLS(operational loads survey) configuration is analyzed using present code. The predicted sectional thrust distribution and sectional airloads time histories show the present scheme is able to capture well the unsteady airloads caused by a parallel BVI. Finally, the predicted noise data, observed in two different positions where are 3.44 times of rotor radius far from the hub center, are quite reasonable agreements with the experimental data compared to the other analysis results.

The very large vessels like VLCC and container ship have been built recently and those vessels have smaller structural strength in comparison with the other convectional skips. As a result the fatigue destruction of upper deck occurs a frequently due to the springing phenomenon at the encountering frequencies. In this study, the hydrodynamic loads are calculated by three-dimensional source distribution method with the translating and pulsating Green function. A ship is longitudinally divided into 23 sections and the added mass, damping and hydrodynamic force of each section is calculated. focusing only on the vertical motion. Stiffness matrix is calculated by the Euler beam theory. The calculation is carried out for Esso Osaka.
