A conservative finite-volume method for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method has been extended to free surface flows or two-fluid systems with topologically complex interfaces. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution method(CICSAM) by Ubbink(1997) for the accurate capturing of fluid interfaces on unstructured meshes, which is based on the finite-volume technique and is fully conservative. The calculated results with the present method are compared to show the ease and accuracy with available numerical and experimental results reported in the literature.
In this paper, the authors developed a multidimensional interpolation method inside a finite volume cell in the computation of high-order accurate numerical flux such as the fifth order WEND (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) scheme. This numerical method starts from a simple Taylor series expansion in a proper spatial order of accuracy, and the WEND filter is used for the reconstruction of sharp nonlinear waves like shocks in the compressible flow. Two kinds of interpolations are developed: one is for the cell-averaged values of conservative variables divided in one mother cell (Type 1), and the other is for the vertex values in the individual cells (Type 2). The result of the present study can be directly used to the cell refinement as well as the convective flux between finer and coarser cells in the Cartesian adaptive grid system (Type 1) and to the post-processing as well as the viscous flux in the Navier-Stokes equations on any types of structured and unstructured grids (Type 2).
In the aeroacoustic application of computational fluid dynamics, the physical phenomena like the crackle in the unsteady compressible jets should be based on very time-accurate numerical solution. The accuracy of the present numerical scheme is extended to the fifth order, using the WENO filter to the sixth-order central difference computation. However, the computational capacity is very restricted by the environment of computational power, so therefore the quadrilateral adaptive grids technique is introduced for this high-order accuracy scheme. The first problem is the multi-dimensional interpolation between fine and coarse grids. Some general benchmark problems are solved to show the effectiveness of this method.
A large eddy simulation with explicit filters on unstructured mesh is presented. Two explicit filters are adopted for reducing the aliasing error of the nonlinear convective term and measuring the level of subgrid scale velocity fluctuation, respectively. The developed subgrid scale model is basically eddy viscosity model which depends on the explicitly filtered fields and needs no additional ad hoc wall treatment such as van Driest damping function. As a validation problem, the flows around a sphere at several Reynolds numbers, including laminar and turbulent regimes, are calculated and compared to experimental data and numerical results in the literature.
Several high resolution schemes such as OSHER, MUSCL, SMART, GAMMA, WACEB and CUBISTA are applied to two typical test cases of a translation test and a collapsing water column problem for the accurate capturing of fluid interfaces. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution schemes in the in-house CFD code(PowerCFD) for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method, which is based on the finite-volume technique and fully conservative. The calculated results are found to show that SMART scheme gives the best performance with respect to accuracy and robustness.
A high-order accurate Euler flow solver based on a discontinuous Galerkin finite-element method has been developed for the numerical simulations of blade-vortex interaction phenomena on unstructured meshes. A free vortex in freestream was investigated to assess the vortex-preserving property and the accuracy of the present flow solver. Blade-vortex interaction problems in subsonic and transonic freestreams were simulated by adopting a multi-level solution-adaptive dynamic mesh refinement/coarsening technique. The results were compared with those of other numerical and experimental methods. It was shown that the present discontinuous Galerkin flow solver can preserve the vortex structure for significantly longer vortex convection time and can accurately capture the complex unsteady blade-vortex interaction flows, including generation and propagation of acoustic waves.
In this paper, diagonal implicit harmonic balance method with overset grid technique is applied to analyze helicopter rotor blade flow in hover and forward flight condition. The chimera grid need interpolation time with sub-grid and background grid in moving problem such as forward flight on every time step. Present method is available enough to reduce the grid module interpolation time. In order to demonstrate present method, Caradonna & Tung's and AH-1G rotor blades are used and the results are compared to other researchers' result and experimental data.
An Interactive grid generation program(KGRID) with graphical user interface(GUI) has been improved. KGRID works on the UNLX environment and GUI has been implemented with OSF/Motif and X Toolkit and the graphics language is Open GL for visualization of the 3D objects. It supports more convenient user environment to generate 2D and 3D multi-block structured grid systems. It provides various useful field grid generation methods, which are the algebraic methods, the elliptic partial differential equations method and the predictor-corrector method. It also supports 3D surface grid generation with NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) and various stretching functions to control grid points distribution on curves and surfaces. And some menus are added to perform flexible management, for the objects. We generated surface and field grid system about full aircraft configuration using KGRID. The performance and stability of the KGRID is verified through the generation of the grid system about a complex shape.
Numerical investigation of a centrifugal compressor volute having a modified straight conical duct hill been made. Three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence equation are solved To avoid coordinate singularity at the central axis of the duct, multi-block H-type grid is generated on the circular cross-sections of the volute and stretched toward the solid wall boundary. We obtained numerical results with three different mass flow rates at the volute inlet, namely, with the inlet conditions that give small, medium and large mass flow rates at the outlet of the conical duct. Agreement with the experimental results is observed.
