Registration is the process aligning the range data sets from different views in a common coordinate system. In order to achieve a complete 3D model, we need to refine the data sets after coarse registration. One of the most popular refinery techniques is the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, which starts with pre-estimated overlapping regions. This paper presents an improved ICP algorithm that can automatically register multiple 3D data sets from unknown viewpoints. The sensor projection that represents the mapping of the 3D data into its associated range image is used to determine the overlapping region of two range data sets. By combining ICP algorithm with the sensor projection constraint, we can make an automatic registration of multiple 3D sets without pre-procedures that are prone to errors and any mechanical positioning device or manual assistance. The experimental results showed better performance of the proposed method on a couple of 3D data sets than previous methods.
In order to reconstruct a full 3D human model in reverse engineering (RE), a 3D scanner needs to be placed arbitrarily around the target model to capture all part of the scanned surface. Then, acquired multiple scans must be registered and merged since each scanned data set taken from different position is just given in its own local co-ordinate system. The goal of the registration is to create a single model by aligning all individual scans. It usually consists of two sub-steps: rough and fine registration. The fine registration process can only be performed after an initial position is approximated through the rough registration. Hence an automated rough registration process is crucial to realize a completely automatic RE system. In this paper an automated rough registration method for aligning multiple scans of complex human face is presented. The proposed method automatically aligns the meshes of different scans with the information of features that are extracted from the estimated principal curvatures of triangular meshes of the human face. Then the roughly aligned scanned data sets are further precisely enhanced with a fine registration step with the recently popular Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm. Some typical examples are presented and discussed to validate the proposed system.

In this paper, an iterative algorithm for stereo registration is proposed. The proposed algorithm is used for reconstructing virtual environment in a virtual studio. The second order error function is employed for stereo registration. The disparity information is obtained by minimizing the error function in an iterative manner. The variable window sizes are used to cope with the projection error and occlusion problem in the stereo vision. The depth information obtained from two pairs of stereo images is used for creating virtual environment by Z-Mixing. The experiment results proves the possibility of applying the proposed algorithm to virtual studio.
This paper considers a method of fast correspondence matching for iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. In robotics, the ICP algorithm and its variants have been widely used for pose estimation by finding the translation and rotation that best align two point clouds. In computational perspectives, the main difficulty is to find the correspondence point on the reference point cloud to each observed point. Jump-table-based correspondence matching is one of the methods for reducing computation time. This paper proposes a method that corrects errors in an existing jump-table-based correspondence matching algorithm. The criterion activating the use of jump-table is modified so that the correspondence matching can be applied to the situations, such as point-cloud registration problems with highly curved surfaces, for which the existing correspondence-matching method is non-applicable. For demonstration, both hardware and simulation experiments are performed. In a hardware experiment using Hokuyo-10LX LiDAR sensor, our new algorithm shows 100% correspondence matching accuracy and 88% decrease in computation time. Using the F1TENTH simulator, the proposed algorithm is tested for an autonomous driving scenario with 2D range-bearing point cloud data and also shows 100% correspondence matching accuracy.
This paper describes a variant of the extended Gaussian image based registration algorithm for point clouds with surface color information. The method correlates the distributions of surface normals for rotational alignment and grid occupancy for translational alignment with hue filters applied during the construction of surface normal histograms and occupancy grids. In this method, the size of the point cloud is reduced with a hue-based down sampling that is independent of the point sample density or local geometry. Experimental results show that use of the hue filters increases the registration speed and improves the registration accuracy. Coarse rigid transformations determined in this step enable fine alignment with dense, unfiltered point clouds or using Iterative Common Point (ICP) alignment techniques.

Registration of microscopic section images from an organism is of importance in analyzing and understanding the function of an organism. Microscopes usually suffer from the radial distortion due to the spherical aberration. In this paper, a correction scheme for the intra-section registration is proposed. The correction scheme uses two corresponding feature points under the radial distortion model. Proposing several variations of the proposed scheme, we extensively conducted experiments for real microscopic images. Iterative versions of the correction from multiple feature points provide good performance for the registration of the optical and scanning electron microscopic images.
Several photogrammetric and geographic information system applications such as surface matching, object recognition, city modeling, environmental monitoring, and change detection deal with multiple versions of the same surface that have been derived from different sources and/or at different times. Surface registration is a necessary procedure prior to the manipulation of these 3D datasets. This need is also applicable in the field of medical imaging, where imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide temporal 3D imagery for monitoring disease progression. This paper will present a general automated surface registration procedure that can establish correspondences between conjugate surface elements. Experimental results using light detection and ranging (LIDAR) and MRI data will verify the feasibility, robustness, and accuracy of this approach.
With the recent increase in available high-resolution (< ~1 m) satellite SAR images, the demand for precise registration of SAR images is increasing in various fields including change detection. The registration between high-resolution SAR images acquired in different look angle is difficult due to speckle noise and geometric distortion caused by the characteristics of SAR images. In this study, registration is performed in two stages, coarse and fine, using the x-band SAR data imaged at staring spotlight mode of TerraSAR-X. For the coarse registration, a method combining the adaptive sampling method and SAR-SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) is applied, and three rigid methods (NCC: Normalized Cross Correlation, Phase Congruency-NCC, MI: Mutual Information) and one non-rigid (Gefolki: Geoscience extended Flow Optical Flow Lucas-Kanade Iterative), for the fine registration stage, was performed for performance comparison. The results were compared by using RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and FSIM (Feature Similarity) index, and all rigid models showed poor results in all image combinations. It is confirmed that the rigid models have a large registration error in the rugged terrain area. As a result of applying the Gefolki algorithm, it was confirmed that the RMSE of Gefolki showed the best result as a 1~3 pixels, and the FSIM index also obtained a higher value than 0.02~0.03 compared to other rigid methods. It was confirmed that the mis-registration due to terrain effect could be sufficiently reduced by the Gefolki algorithm.

In this study, we investigated the rotational characteristics which were comprised of directionality and linearity of target registration error (TRE) as a study in advance to enhance the accuracy of contour-based registration in neuronavigation. For the experiment, two rigid head phantoms that have different faces with specially designed target frame fixed inside of the phantoms were used. Three-dimensional coordinates of facial surface point cloud and target point of the phantoms were acquired using computed tomography (CT) and 3D scanner. Iterative closest point (ICP) method was used for registration of two different point cloud and the directionality and linearity of TRE in overall head were calculated by using 3D position of targets after registration. As a result, it was represented that TRE had consistent direction in overall head region and was increased in linear fashion as distance from facial surface, but did not show high linearity. These results indicated that it is possible for decrease TRE by controlling orientation of facial surface point cloud acquired from scanner, and the prediction of TRE from surface registration error can decrease the registration accuracy in lesion. In the further studies, we have to develop the contour-based registration method for improvement of accuracy by considering rotational characteristics of TRE.
For TOPS InSAR processing, high-precision image co-registration is required. We propose an image co-registration method suitable for the TOPS mode by comparing the performance of cross correlation method, the geometric co-registration and the enhanced spectral diversity (ESD) matching algorithm based on the spectral diversity (SD) on the Sentinel-1 TOPS mode image. Using 23 pairs of interferometric pairs generated from 25 Sentinel-1 TOPS images, we applied the cross correlation (CC), geometric correction with only orbit information (GC1), geometric correction combined with iterative cross-correlation (GC2, GC3, GC4), and ESD iteration (ESD_GC, ESD_1, ESD_2). The mean of co-registration errors in azimuth direction by cross correlation and geometric matching are 0.0041 pixels and 0.0016 pixels, respectively. Although the ESD method shows the most accurate result with the error of less than 0.0005 pixels, the error of geometric co-registration is reduced to 0.001 pixels by repetition through additional cross correlation matching between the reference and resampled slave image. The ESD method is not applicable when the coherence of the burst overlap areas is low. Therefore, the geometric co-registration method through iterative processing is a suitable alternative for time series analysis using multiple SAR data or generating interferogram with long time intervals.
