Regioselectivity in the Cycloaddition Reactions of t-Butyl Trimethylsilyl Thioketone with 1,3-Butadienes

  • Thermal cycloaddition of t-butyl trimethylsilyl thioketone (1) with 2-substituted dienes such as isoprene and 2-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-butadiene occurred smoothly at 80${\circ}C$ to afford regioiomeric mixtures of cycloadducts. On the other hand, similar treatment of 1 with 1-substituted dienes such as trans-1,3-pentadiene, 1-methoxy-and 1-acetoxy-1,3-butadiene and Danishefsky's diene afforded a single regioisomeric adduct, respectively. Protodesilylation of the silylated adducts 8 and 11 could also be performed with ease.

  • The mechanism of the photodecomposition of 2-methoxy-1,2-diphenyl diazoethane has been investigated in methanol and isoprene using time-resolved laser flash photolysis techniques. The reaction of triplet carbene which is generated from 2-methoxy-1,2-diphenyl diazoethane with methanol is believed to proceed via thermal excitation to the singlet state. The activation energy and enthalpy are consistent with a mechanism involving thermal equilibrium between the triplet and singlet state followed by the reaction of the singlet with methanol to give ether.

Effects of Temperature and lncoming Concentrations on the Removal of Volatile Organic Compounds in a Biofilter Packed with Peat (Peat가 충진된 고정층 생물반응기에서 온도 투입농도가 휘발성 유기화합물의 분해에 미치는 영향)

  • Biofiltration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was performed for 80 days in a biofilter packed with peat. The empty bed residence time was 3.2 min. for a gas mixture of isoprene, dimethyl sulfide, chloroform. benzene, trichlorethylene, toluene, m0xylene, o-xylene and styrene. After 34 days of acclimatization the removal efficiency for a 83 g/㎥ gas input was 93% at $25^{circ}C$ and 73% at $45^{circ}C$, respectively. The maximum cell density at $25^{circ}C$ was 1.12$\times$10(sup)8 cells/g. Removal efficiencies of m-xylene and toluene (91%) were better than that of benzene (86%). The first quarter of the packed column removed 60% of the incoming VOCs.

  • The innerliner for a tire has excellent impermeability, air retention and good flex properties. The innerliner offers a role to improve performance parameter, such as air retention and tire durability that is of praricular importance for commercial tires. In order to improve the gas barrier properties of a innerliner, most of the innerliner rubbers, such as a halogenated butyl rubber(HIIR), brominated poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene)(BIIR), brominated polyisobutylene-co-paramethylstyrene(BIMS) are used as nanocomposites with nano fillers such as silicates, graphite etc. Innerliners based on nanocomposites may allow gauge adjustments and permeability reductions with potential improvement in tire durability. This article discusses potential innerliner permeablity reduction and compounding parameters on the properties of nanocomposite based innerliners.

Zirconocene-catalyzed Copolymerizations of Ethylene with 5-Methyl-1,4-hexadiene as Non-conjugated Diene

  • The mixtures of non-conjugated dienes, 4-methyl-1,4-hexadiene and 5-methyl-1,4-hexadiene (MHD), were successfully synthesized by the reaction of isoprene with ethylene using Fe(III)-based catalyst in toluene. The conversion was over 96 mol% on the basis of the initial amount of isoprene used. The production yield for MHD was nearly 50 mol%, the other was polyisoprene. The mixtures were successfully copolymerized with ethylene by using zirconium-based metallocenes. The products were characterized by the combinations of gas chromatography, high temperature gel permeation chromatography, $^1$H NMR, $^{13}$ C NMR, high temperature $^1$H NMR, UV/visible spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that 5-methyl-1,4-hexadiene was active enough to be incorporated into the copolymer chain but the corresponding isomeric material,4-methyl-1,4-hexadiene, was inactive in metallocene-catalyzed copolymerizations. Specifically, in the zirconocene-catalyzed copolymerizations of ethylene with MHD, ansa-structure catalysts seem to be more efficient than non-bridged type zirconocene. The degree of incorporation of MHD in the resulting copolymers was able to be controlled by the amount of non-conjugated dienes used initially.

Variations of BVOCs Emission Characteristics according to Increasing PAR (유효광합성량 (PAR)의 증가에 따른 BVOCs 배출 특성 변화)

  • In this study, emission rates (ER) of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) were measured by varying levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). An appropriate plan for ozone reduction according to increasing ecology area ratio in future metropolitan areas was suggested. Several trees were selected as representative tree species in urban areas. Emission rates and composition ratios of monoterpene and isoprene emitted from these trees were estimated and compared. As a result, it was found that emission rates of BVOCs were considerably different depending on tree species. Especially, BVOCs emitted from Platanus orientalis and Quercus mongolica could significantly affect ozone increase in the metropolitan area, because the emission rates were several thousands to ten thousand times higher than those emitted from Zelkova serrata and Prunus serrulata. Furthermore, it was observed that emission rates of BVOCs by species increased maximum up to 10 times when PAR, which has close relations with temperature, rose. It was concluded that tree species such as Zelkova serrata et al., was appropriate for metropolitan areas since the species has low ozone potential and good landscape. Suppose this type of trees are planted on purpose in the urban areas, better ambient air quality will be promised in the future.

Relative Contribution of the Oxidation of VOCs to the Concentrations of Hydroxyl (OH) and Peroxy Radicals in the Air of Seoul Metropolitan Area (서울에서의 VOCs의 히드록실 및 페록시 라디칼 농도에 대한 상대적 기여도 연구)

  • This study examines relative contributions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the formation of hydroxyl (OH) and peroxy radicals such as $HO_2$ and $RO_2$ during the intensive sampling period (Jun. $1{\sim}30$, 2004) in the air of Seoul metropolitan area. As to the contribution of VOCs to $HO_x$ levels, the impact of individual VOC concentration change on $HO_2$ concentration change was more than an order of magnitude higher than that on OH concentration change during the study period. The contribution of change in isoprene concentration to $HO_2$ concentration change was 38 times higher than OH and that in the concentration of alkene compounds to $HO_2$ concentration change was 31 times higher than OH. Moreover, the concentration changes of isoprene and aromatic compounds (AROM) played significant roles in $HO_x$ concentration changes. On the other hands, aldehydes (ALD2) and alkanes (ALKA) showed anti-correlation (negative) in $HO_x$ concentration changes with low contribution ($-4{\times}10^{-3}$ pptv/ppbv (OH) and $-58{\times}10^{-3}$ ($HO_2$) for ALD2; $-1{\times}10^{-3}$ (OH) and $-15{\times}10^{-3}$ ($HO_2$) for ALKA). Unlike other VOCs, $C_2H_6$ and $C_3H_8$ showed positive or negative contribution to peroxy radicals, depending on ambient air conditions. The contribution of VOC concentration changes to changes in $CH_3O_2$ and $RO_2$ concentration showed similar pattern to $HO_x$ contribution.

Effects of Processing Geometry on the Mechanical Properties and Silica Dispersion of Silica-Filled Isobutylene-Isoprene Rubber (IIR) Compounds (롤밀과 밀폐식 혼합기가 실리카 분산 및 부틸고무 복합소재의 물성에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effects of processing geometry of silica-filled isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR) compounds on its mechanical properties and silica dispersion, using a two roll mill and an internal mixer (banbury mixer). The compound processed with the two roll mill showed the longer induction time ($t_2$), higher maximum torque ($T_{max}$), and better silica dispersion than the compound processed with the internal mixer; however, showed slightly the lower cure index ($t_{90}$). The mechanical properties (hardness, 300% modulus, tensile strength, elongation) of the compound processed with two roll mill were higher than compound done with the internal mixer.

  • To increase peel strength, low temperature properties and flowability of pressure sensitive adhesives(PSA) used in a heat shrinkable sheet, these properties were evaluated by changing each components in type and content. In this study, Isobutylene-co-Isoprene Rubber (IIR) which has good wetherability was selected as a base polymer. Instead of rosin ester, petroleum resin was selected as a tackifier because of superior peel strength. By decreasing petroleum resin contents, flowability of PSA was decreased. High molecular weight of polybutene was better than low molecular weight for the peel strength of PSA. Large particle size of carbon black showed better properties than small one in peel strength and brittleness temperature. By adding calcium carbonate, the cost of compound was able to be reduced. But it must be used with carbon black.

Characterization of a New Acidophilic Acetobacter sp. Strain HA Isolated from Korean Traditional Fermented Vinegar

  • A new strain of acidophilic, acetogenic bacterium, Acetobacter sp. strain HA was isolated by selective enrichment from the traditionally fermented rice wine vinegar in Korea. It was a gram-negative, non-motile short rod and oxidized acetate and lactate. The optimal temperature and pH for growth were $28^{\circ}C$ and 4.0, respectively. The strain HA differed from other Acetobacter species by growing well on methanol, xylitol, inositol, dulcitol, D-xylose, L-arabinose, and D-mannose as sole sources of carbon and energy. The isolated strain HA did not produce $\gamma$-pyrones from glucose and did not produce ketone bodies from glycerol. The quinone system used in this study was an ubiquinone-9 isoprene unit. The guanine-plus-cytosine content of the DNA was 50.7 mol%, and the major cellular fatty acids were $C_{18:1} and C_{16:0}$.
