  • The dehydrocyclization of n-heptane was studied over $Pt-Sn/{\gamma}-Al/_2O_3$ catalysts with varying Sn content in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor. The range of experimental conditions was at the temperature between 450 and $550^{\circ}C$, the pressure $20{\times}10^5-50{\times}10^5Pa$, the contact time 0.09 and 0.27 hr and the $H_2/H.C$. mole ratio 10. The conversion and selectivity of dehydrocyclization increased with increasing temperature, but decreased with increasing pressure. When we use Sn as a promoter, the selectivity of dehydrocyclization changesa a little, but the conversion was increased and the selectivity of isomerization increased a lot. The activation energy of dehydrocyclization of n-heptane was 34.5 kcal/mol over 0.6 wt % Pt-0.6 wt % $Sn/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$.

  • Enzymatic characteristics of glucose isomerase from Streptomyces spp. K-14 were studied. The optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme reaction are $pH\;7.5{\sim}8.0$ and $70^{\circ}{\sim}75^{\circ}C$, respectively, in the presence of 5 mM $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ and 2 mM $CoCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$. The enzyme activity was activated by both $Mg^{++}$ and $Co.^{++}\;Mg^{++}$ is required for the initial activation of the isomerization reaction, whereas $Co^{++}$ was essential for the increased stability of the enzyme protein. Glucose concentration up to 60% did not affect the reaction velocity as well as the equilibrium conversion of the enzyme.

  • Y-zeolite and ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$ were used as supports on CO and $C_3$H$_{6}$ oxidation for diesel emission control. The catalysts composed of Pd and Pt as active components were wash coated on honeycomb type ceramic substrate. The oxidation of CO and $C_3$H$_{6}$ was carried out over prepared honeycomb in a fixed bed continuous reactor in the temperature range of 20$0^{\circ}C$~50$0^{\circ}C$ and 20,000 GHSV (h$^{-1}$ ). Surface area of Y-zeolite was larger than that of ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$ due to channel structure of Y-zeolite. Therefore, high conversion of CO and $C_3$H$_{6}$ could be obtained because of good dispersion of active metals over Y-zeolite. The honeycomb used Y-zeolite as a support showed higher $C_3$H$_{6}$ conversion than that of ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$ due to better cracking and isomerization activity of Y-zeolite. PdPt catalyst showed high conversion of CO and $C_3$H$_{6}$ at low temperature region, 20$0^{\circ}C$~30$0^{\circ}C$, for their synergy effects. PdPt/Y-Zeolite catalyst could achieve more than 80% conversion of $C_3$H$_{6}$ at 30$0^{\circ}C$. The use of Y-zeolite as a support increased CO and $C_3$H$_{6}$ conversion, and decreased SO$_2$ conversion very effectively. Y-zeolite found to have a good adaptability as a support for the diesel emission after treatment system.

  • Background: Owing to its high efficiency in lipid and protein production, peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is considered one of most important crops world-wide. The kernels of peanuts are undoubtedly the most important product this plant, whereas the skin is almost completely neglected in nutraceutical terms. However, peanut skin contains potentially health-promoting phenolics and dietary fiber, and there is considerable potential for commercial exploitation. In this study, we evaluated the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of an extract of peanut skin (PS). Methods and Results: The α-glucosidase inhibitory effects of 80% ethanol extracts of peanut (A. hypogaea L. 'Sinpalkwang') skin were evaluated and found to have a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 1.2 ㎍/㎖. Progress curves for enzyme reactions were recorded spectrophotometrically, and the inhibition kinetics revealed time-dependent inhibition with enzyme isomerization. Furthermore, using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole-orbitrap mass spectrometry, we identified 26 compounds in the peanut skin extract, namely, catechin, epicatechin, and 24 proanthocyanidins. Conclusions: The results suggest that peanut skin can be utilized as an effective source of α-glucosidase inhibition in functional foods and nutraceuticals.

  • The cause and the degree of the cis to trans isomerization were investigated about soybean oil (SBO), corngerm oil (CGO), cottonseed oil (CSO), margarine (MG) and shortening (ST). All samples treated with various conditions were analyzed to determine physicochemical characteristics (AV, POV, IV, RI), fatty acid composition, total trans fatty acid content and change of trans fatty acid composition by GLC, IR and HPLC. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Physicochemical constants were changed with a gentle slope according to incubating period at 40${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$ and physicochemical constants of margarine and shortening were changed, significiantly. 2. The saturation degree in the unsaturated fatty acid composition determined by GLC gradually were increased during incubation and heating periodically. For palmitic-and stearic acid content at the samples stored in the incubator, the saturation degrees were gradually increased. But for the case of heat treatment, they were increased more rapidly than other fatty acids. 3. Total trans fatty acid contents in each samples were determined by GLC, IR and HPLC, the amount of trans fatty acids were measured with discrepancy. It was caused by deviation of analytical instruments, methods and the kinds of samples. Trans fatty acids were measured more definitly in IR more than GLC and HPLC. On the other hand, total trans fatty acid contents in average levels for SBO, CGO, CSO, MG and ST stored for 35 days and heated for 24 hours were 1.3%, 1.1%, 0.9%, 22.6% and 13.8%, and 3.6%, 3.0%, 2.8%, 41.2% and 20.8%, respectively.

  • The rates of the forward mutarotation of poly(trans-5-methyl-L-proline) in trifluoro-ethanol and of the reverse mutarotation in trifluoroethanol-n-butanol (1:4 v/v) have been measured at a number of temperatures and polymer concentrations. It was found that both mutarotations are of first-order with respect to the polymer concentration. A modified Arrhenius equation to evalute the activation energy was derived for the reaction kinetics, in which the relation between the measured physical properties and concentration, and the order of tle reaction are uncertain. The activation energies for the forward and reverse mutarotation were found to be 32.5 and 33.5 kcal per residue mole, respectively, which are about 10 kcal per residue mole higher than the $E_a$ for the mutarotation of polyproline (the resonance energy of amide bonds). The excessive quantity of the activation energy was attributed to the steric barrier between carbonyl and methyl groups during the cis-trans isomerization of amide bonds in the polymer.

  • It was explored, whether the usual course of the ozonolysis of olefins can be modified with the help of pyridine. In the First step, the ozone oxidation of trans-3-hexene was performed with and without pyridine in the inert solvents n-pentane and dichloromethane. In addition, base catalyzed decompositions of monomeric and polymeric ozonides were also examined to identify the reaction mechanism. The reaction products were identified by modern analytical tools. The results of this work showed that reactions of ozone with olefins in the absence of pyridine in aprotic solvents gave, one hand, dominantly peroxidic products, namely monomeric and polymeric ozonides. The other hand, they in the presence of pyridine gave only the non-peroxidic products, namely propionaldehyde and rearranged propionic acid without peroxidic products. It seems, also, that the pyridine-catalyzed isomerization of the Criegee zwitterion of trans-3-hexene to give propionic acid takes place in the ozone oxidation of trans-3-hexene.

  • To investigate the substrate variety of a putative non-metal dependent isomerase, the tagatose-6-phosphate isomerase (E.C. 5.3.1.26) structural genes (lacB; 510bp and lacA; 430bp) of Staphylococcus aureus were subcloned and co-expressed. Based on the substrate configuration, various aldoses were surveyed for substrate of ketose isomerization. Among the 10 aldoses tested, D-ribose and D-allose were isomerized by the enzyme. The subunit A and B showed more than $95\%$ activity for D-ribose and $75\%$ for D-allose in the presence of 1mM EDTA compared with non-EDTA conditions, which implying tagatose-6-phosphate isomerase is a non-metal dependent isomerase. Each of subunit A or subunit B alone showed no activity for any of the substrates tested. The affinity constant ($K_m$) of tagatose-6-phosphate isomerase against D-ribose and D-allose were 26 mM and 142 mM, respectively.

  • Partial oxidation of ethylene over 10wt% $Ag/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst was studied with a pulse reactor which was connected directly to a G. C. When ethylene was injected after oxygen injection at the temperature where molecular adsorption of oxygen is difficult ethylene oxide was evolved. From the results, it is suggested that adsorbed atomic oxygen is related with the evolution of ethylene oxide. The selectivity to ethylene oxide decreased with the decrease of the amounts of adsorbed oxygen and bulk oxygen. Ethylene oxide was either decomposed to ethylene and adsorbed oxygen or isomerized to acetaldehyde. However, the isomerization of ethylene oxide to acetaldehyde was strongly suppressed by the preadsorbed oxygen.

  • The CLA used to add in diet was chemically synthesized by alkaline isomerization method with corn oil. To investigated the effects of conjugated linoleic acid(CLA) added diet feeding on CLA accumulation and blood characteristics of pork, a total of 64 Landrace was fed both CLA-free and CLA-added(0.3, 0.6 and 0.9%) diet for 1∼4 weeks. Cholesterol compositions in blood and CLA contents and fatty acid compositions of loin, belly, bone and skin were determined at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks after CLA added at fed. The HDL content in blood of all treatments was higher(P<0.05) than that of control and that of treatment 3 was higher(P<0.05) than that of other treatments among the CLA feeding periods. Palmitic, stearic and linolenic acids composition of loin and belly was increased but oleic, linoleic and arachidonic acids composition of them was decreased according to increasing the CLA feeding periods. CLA contents of loin and belly were higher than that of control and increased according to increasing the quantity of CLA and CLA feeding periods. CLA contents of bone and skin were higher than that of control, too. CLA content of skin was higher than that of bone. It was suggested that CLA could be accumulated in loin, belly, bone and skin by dietary CLA supplementation, and the CLA concentration and fatty acid composition in muscle could be affected by CLA level in diet and feeding period.
