Seismic isolated building structures are examined in this study. The triple concave friction pendulum (TCFP) is used as a seismic isolation system which is easy to be manufactured and enduring more than traditional seismic isolation systems. In the TCFP, take advantage of weight which pendulum carrying and it's geometry in order to obtain desirable result of seismic isolation systems. These systems offer advantage to buildings which subject to severe earthquake. This is result of damping force of earthquake by means of their internal constructions, which consists of multiple surfaces. As the combinations of surfaces upon which sliding is occurring change, the stiffness and effective friction change accordingly. Additionally, the mentioned the TCFP is modeled as of a series arrangement of the three single concave friction pendulum (SCFP) bearings. A two dimensional- and eight- story of a building with and without isolation system are used in the time history analysis in order to investigate of the effectiveness of the seismic isolation systems on the buildings. Results are compared with each other to emphasize efficiency of the TCFP as a seismic isolation device against the other friction type isolation system like single and double concave surfaces. The values of the acceleration, floor displacement and isolator displacement obtained from the results by using different types of the isolation bearings are compared each other. As a result, the findings show that the TCFP bearings are more effective devices for isolation of the buildings against severe earthquakes.
The on-board appendages of satellites with mechanical moving parts such as the fly-wheel, the control-moment gyro, the cryocooler, and the gimbal-type directional antenna can generate an undesirable micro-vibration disturbance, which is one of the main causes of the image-quality degradation that affects high-resolution observation satellites. Consequently, the isolation of the micro-vibration issue has always been considered as salient, and the micro-vibration is therefore the focus of this study wherein a complex system that can provide the dual functions of a guaranteed vibration-isolation performance and electrical energy harvesting is proposed. The vibration-isolation and energy-harvesting performances of the complex system are predicted through a numerical analysis based on the characteristics that are obtained from component-level tests. In addition, the effectiveness of the complex system that is proposed in this study is verified through an assembly-level functional-performance test.

Vibration caused by railroad vehicle including subway train running raises a lot of problems to the neighboring buildings. Therefore lots of methods to isolate the railway vibration have been studied and practically applied to sites. As one of them, specially designed vibration isolation device was installed in the some section of Seoul subway. This device is installed between the rail and track slab. Because the process of installation is relatively simple, this method can be applied to the existing railways in servicing. We measured the vibration and noise to check the effectiveness of this device before and after the installation. The result showed that the vibration level of the slab and platform was reduced to 7 - 10 dB. Expecially high frequency component was reduced to a large amount. From this result, we can conclude that these kind of devices are useful to the reduction of the railroad vibration, expecially the high frequency vibration which can cause structure born noise.

In this study, two types of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) with segmental rotors are presented in detail. The first is a 6/5 segmental rotor type, whereas the second is a 12/8 segmental rotor type. Both motor types have the same stator, rotor, and winding configurations. The stator is constructed with special stator poles, namely, exclusively designed exciting and auxiliary poles. The rotor is constructed from a series of discrete segments, each of which is embedded into the nonmagnetic isolator. The windings are only wound on the exciting poles, and no winding is wound on the auxiliary poles. Given these configurations, short flux paths and high flux-linkage utilization rate are achieved in the proposed motors, which may reduce the magnetomotive force requirement and increase the electrical utilization of a machine. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed motors, their characteristics, such as magnetic flux distribution, flux-linkage, torque, radial force, and efficiency, are analyzed and compared with those of a conventional 12/8 SRM. Meanwhile, two prototypes, one for each proposed segmental rotor type, are also designed and manufactured. Finally, the validity of the proposed motors is further verified by test results.
Seismic base isolation has been accepted as one of the most popular design procedures to protect important structures against earthquakes. However, due to lack of information and experimental data the application of base isolation is quite limited to nuclear power plant (NPP) industry. Moreover, the effects of inelastic behavior of soil beneath base-isolated NPP have raised questions to the effectiveness of isolation device. This study applies the wavelet analysis to investigate the effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the seismic response of a base-isolated NPP structure. To evaluate the SSI effects, the NPP structure is modelled as a lumped mass stick model and combined with a soil model using the concept of cone models. The lead rubber bearing (LRB) base isolator is used to adopt the base isolation system. The shear wave velocity of soil is varied to reflect the real rock site conditions of structure. The comparison between seismic performance of isolated structure and non-isolated structure has drawn. The results show that the wavelet analysis proves to be an efficient tool to evaluate the SSI effects on the seismic response of base-isolated structure and the seismic performance of base-isolated NPP is not sensitive to the effects in this case.
It is of great importance to assure the running safety and ride comfort in designing the floating slab track for the mitigation of train-induced vibration. In this paper, for this, analyzed are the system requirements for the running safety and ride comfort, and then, the behavior of train and track at the transition zone between the floating slab track and the conventional concrete slab track according to several main design variables such as spring constant, damping coefficient, spacing and arrangement of isolators and slab length, using the dynamic analysis technique considering the train-track interaction. The results of numerical analysis demonstrate that the discontinuity of the support stiffness at the transition results in a drastic increase of the vertical vibration acceleration of the train body, wheel-rail interaction force, rail bending stress and uplift force. The increase becomes higher with the decrease of the spring constant of isolators and the increase of the isolator spacing, but the damping ratio does not significantly affect the behavior of train and track at the transition. Therefore, to assure the running safety and ride comfort, simultaneously increasing the effectiveness of vibration isolation, it is effective to minimize the relative vertical offset between the floating slab and the conventional track slab by adjusting the spring constant and spacing of isolators at the transition.
This paper introduces a system allows for seismic isolation of the pallet from the rack in the down-aisle direction, occupies minimal vertical space (5 cm) and ±7.5 cm of deformation range. A conceptual model of the isolation system is presented, leading to a constitutive equation governing its behavior. A first experimental campaign studying the response of the isolation system's components was conducted to calibrate the parameters of its constitutive equation. A second experimental campaign evaluated the response of the isolation system with mass placed on it, subjected to cyclic loading. The results of this second campaign were compared with the numerical predictions using the pre-calibrated constitutive equation, allowing a double-blind validation of the constitutive equation of the isolation system. Finally, a numerical evaluation of the isolation system subjected to a synthetic earthquake of one component. This evaluation allowed verifying attributes of the proposed isolation system, such as its self-centering capacity and its effectiveness in reducing the absolute acceleration of the isolated mass and the shear load transmitted to the supporting beams of the rack.

A centrifugal turbo blower is one of the part to generate electric power of fuel cell electric vehicle(FCEV). In order to generate the electric power of FCEV, the centrifugal turbo blower operates at very high speed above 30,000rpm in order to increase the pressure of the air, which supplied to a stack of FCEV, using rotation of its impeller blades. Vibration which originated from the blower is generated by unbalance of mechanical components, rotation of bearings and rotating asymmetry that rotate at high speed. The vibration is transmitted to receiving structure through vibration isolators and it can causes serious problems in the noise, vibration and harshness(NVH) performance. Thus, the study about reducing this kind of vibration is an important task. Quantifying the effectiveness of vibration isolation can be effectively accomplished by using vibrational power flow because relative contributions of each isolator to the total vibration transmission can be easily represented. In this paper, vibrational power flow is applied to the centrifugal turbo blower mounted on FCEV in order to analyze the most dominant vibration transmitting path. As a result, the main contributor among four isolators is a mount #3 of the blower. Also, a 30 percent lowering of the mount #3 stiffness shows 34 percent decrement of vibrational power flow by the simulation.
Recent studies have discovered that a conventional passive isolation system may suffer from an excessive isolator displacement when subjected to a near-fault earthquake that usually has a long-period velocity pulse waveform. Semi-active isolation using variable friction dampers (VFD), which requires a suitable control law, may provide a solution to this problem. To control the VFD in a semi-active isolation system more efficiently, this paper investigates experimentally the possible use of a control law whose control logic is similar to that of the anti-lock braking systems (ABS) widely used in the automobile industry. This ABS-type controller has the advantages of being simple and easily implemented, because it only requires the measurement of the isolation-layer velocity and does not require system modeling for gain design. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the isolation period, which usually decides the isolation efficiency. In order to verify its feasibility and effectiveness, the ABS-type controller was implemented on a variable-friction isolation system whose slip force is regulated by an embedded piezoelectric actuator, and a seismic simulation test was conducted for this isolation system. The experimental results demonstrate that, as compared to a passive isolation system with various levels of added damping, the semi-active isolation system using the ABS-type controller has the better overall performance when both the far-field and the near-fault earthquakes with different PGA levels are considered.
In past major earthquakes (1994 Northridge, 1995 Kobe, Chi-Chi 1999, Kocaeli 1999), significant damages occurred in the liquid storage tanks. The basic failure patterns were observed to be the buckling of the tank wall and uplift of the anchorage system. The damages in the industrial facilities and nuclear power plants have caused the spread of toxic substances to the environment and significant fires. Seismic isolation can be used in liquid storage tanks to decouple the structure and decrease the structural demand in the superstructure in case of ground shaking. Previous studies on the use of seismic isolation systems on liquid storage tanks show that an isolation system reduces the impulsive response but might slightly increase the convective one. There is still a lack of understanding of the seismic response of seismically isolated liquid storage tanks considering the fluid-structure interaction. In this study, one broad tank, one medium tank, and one slender tank are selected and designed. Two- and three-dimensional elastomeric bearings are used as seismic isolation systems. The seismic performance of the tanks is then investigated through nonlinear dynamic time-history analyses. The effectiveness of each seismic isolation system on tanks' performance was investigated. Isolator tension forces, modal analysis results, hydrodynamic stresses, strains, sloshing heights and base shear forces of the tanks are compared. The results show that the total base shear is lower in 3D-isolators compared to 2D-isolators. Even though the tank wall stresses, and strains are slightly higher in 3D-isolators, they are more efficient to prevent the tension problem.
