The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of circuit weight training(CWT) on isokinetic muscle strength and body composition in elderly. The subjects who engaged in this experiment exercised at $40\%$ of 1-RM, 12 repetitions, followed by 15 sec as the subject moved to the each break training program which was consist of the circuit of 10 stations performed on 3 set a day, circuits 3 days a week during 10 weeks. The assessment of isokinetic factor was in concentric flexors and extensors of right and left knee joint. Tests were performed on the Cybex 770 Isokinetic Dynamometer and body composition were estimated the three parts of chest, abdomen and anterior thigh by using skinfold caliper, calculated the average and followed by Seri and Brozek way. Statistical analysis were performed using analysis of variance paired t-test, accepting level for all significant was above ${\alpha}=.05$ and ${\alpha}=.01$. Following is as a result of 10 weeks circuit weight training. 1. At the $60_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee isokinetic concentric flexors and extensors peak torque increased significantly(p<.01). 2. At the $180_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee isokinetic concentric flexors and extensors peak torque increased significantly(p<.01). 3. At the $60_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee isokenetic concentric flexors and extensors average power increased significantly(p<.05, p<.01) and at the $180_{\circ}$ /sec, the right extensors didn't show any statistical significant. 4. At the $60_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee Isokinetic concentric flexors and extensors total work increased significantly(p<.05, p<.01) but at the $180_{\circ}$ /sec right concentric flexors didn't show any statistical significant. 5. The body composition changed significantly(p<.01). These results suggest that 10 weeks circuit weight training increases the peak torque, average power, total work significantly and decreases the $\%$body fat significantly.
After warming-up exercise for 20 minutes, Isokinetic measurement of trunk strength for flexor and extensor was done by using Cybex 6000 TEF Unit on 91 healthy male white workers from 22years old to 49 years old, and compared each other. 20 repetitions of trunk extension-flexion were done at $120^{\circ}$/sec angular velocity. After resting for 1 minutes, Four repetitions at two different angular velocities($60^{\circ}$/sec, $120^{\circ}$/sec) were done with 30 seconds of resting interval between each angular velocity. The purpose of this study is to obtain the isokinetic normative strength values for trunk extensors and flexors, and is to know the correlation between age, height, weight of subjects and data from isokinetic trunk strength measurement, and is to provide a guideline for exercise program of male white collar workers The collected data were analyzed by ANOVA, Duncan's Multiple Range Test, and Pearson correlation coefficiency in PC-SAS program. The results obtained were as follow; 1. There is significant positive-correlation with the statistic value between weight and peak torque of trunk muscles at two different angular velocities($60^{\circ}$/sec, $120^{\circ}$/sec)(p<01), between height and peak torque of trunk muscles at two different angular velocities($60^{\circ}$/sec, $120^{\circ}$/sec) except peak torque of trunk flexor at $60^{\circ}$/sec(p<01). 2. There is nagitive-correlation between age and peak torque of trunk muscles at two different angular velocities($60^{\circ}$/sec, $120^{\circ}$/sec), there is significant differences with statistic value between age and peak torque of trunk extensor at $120^{\circ}$/sec(p<.01). 3. Mean peak torque and mean peak torque % by body weight of trunk extensor is 1.1 times higher values than trunk flexor at $60^{\circ}$/sec. 4. There is the increase in peak torque angle of trunk flexor with increasing of age, and the decrease in peak torque angle of trunk flexor with increasing of age at two different angular velocities($60^{\circ}$/sec, $120^{\circ}$/sec). there is significant differences with statistic value in peak torque angle of trunk flexor at $120^{\circ}$/sec(p<.01). 5. There is significant decrease in endurance ratio of trunk extensor with increasing of age at $120^{\circ}$/sec(p<.01). In conclusion, peak torque of trunk extensor is 1.1 times higher values than trunk flexor in healthy male white collar workers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of isokinetic exercise on muscular performance and thickness of the quadriceps muscle. Methods: Twenty one healthy male students participated in this study. Participants were divided into 2 groups: $60^{\circ}/sec$ of isokinetic exercise (n=7), $180^{\circ}/sec$ (n=7) and $300^{\circ}/sec$ (n=7). Each group did isokinetic exercises 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Each group was measured for peak torque per body weight, average power and total work using a Biodex System 4. Rectus femoris, vastus laterails and vastus medialis were measured for muscle thickness using a SONOACE 6000C. Data were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS 12.0. Results: There was a significant time-related effect in peak torque per body weight, average power and total work. There was a significant time-related effect in the vastus medialis and rectus femoris muscle thickness. However, there was a significant group by time interaction for vastus laterlis muscle thickness. Conclusion: Isokinetic exercise may be an effective method for improving quadriceps muscle performance regardless of angular velocity. However, the thickness of the rectus femoris and vastus medialis muscle may be increased regardless of the angular velocity of the quadriceps muscle the vastus lateralis muscle may only be remarkably improved when doing exercise with low angular velocity.
Background: Robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) is an effective method for walking rehabilitation. Additionally, the body weight support (BWS) system reduces muscle fatigue while walking. However, no previous studies have investigated the effects of RAGT with BWS on isokinetic strength of quadriceps and hamstring muscles. Objects: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of torque, work, and power on the quadriceps and hamstring muscles during RAGT, using the BWS of three conditions in healthy subjects. The three different BWS conditions were BWS 50%, BWS 20%, and full weight bearing (FWB). Methods: Eleven healthy subjects (7 males and 4 females) participated in this study. The Walkbot_S was used to cause fatigue of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles and the Biodex Systems 4 Pro was used to measure the isokinetic torque, work, and power of them. After RAGT trials of each of the three conditions, the subjects performed isokinetic concentric knee flexion and extension, five at an angular velocity of 60°/s and fifteen at an angular velocity of 180°/s. One-way repeated analysis of variance was used to determine significant differences in all the variables. The least significant difference test was used for post-hoc analysis. Results: On both sides, there were significant differences in peak torque (PT) of knee extension and flexion between the three BWS conditions at an angular velocity of 60°/s and 180°/s conditions. A post-hoc comparison revealed that the PT in the BWS 50% was significantly greater than in the BWS 20% and the FWB and the PT in the BWS 20% was significantly greater than in the FWB. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the lower BWS during RAGT seems to lower the isokinetic torque, work, and power of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles because of the muscle fatigue increase.
The role of eccentric muscle activities in functional everyday activities and sport is important and equally significant to concentric conditions. Eccentric and concentric exercise and evaluation are, therefore, very important. The purposes of this study were to measure eccentric md concentric peak torgue, percentage of peak torque, average power and percentage of average power of trunk flexors and extensors by using the Cybex NORM isokinetic dynamometer, and to standardize the value obtained. Thirty four young volunteers were tested, 17 females and 17 males, who had no history of back pain or abnormality. Each subjects were tested on three repetitions for isokinetic concentric and eccentric contraction at 5 velocities. The results were as follows; 1) Peak torque percent body weight of eccentric contraction were significantly greater than concentric contraction at each angular velocity and in trunk flexors and extensors(p<0.01). 2) Peak torque percent body weight of concentric contraction were significantly decreased as the angular velocity increased both male and female(p<0.01). 3) Peak torque percent body weight of eccentric contraction were not significantly changed as the angular velocity increased both male and female(p<0.05), 4) Peak torque percent body weight of male were significantly greater than female at each angular velocity and in concentric and eccentric contraction of trunk flexors and extensors(p<0.01)

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 8 weeks of resistance exercise on gait-related abilities and the differences in age groups to provide reference materials for application of training by age group. Subjects in their 30s, 40s, and 50s were recruited and subjected to a lower extremity exercise, in which the intensity gradually increased three times a week for eight weeks. The gait-related variables, torque at 0.18 sec, acceleration time, and torque at 30°, were assessed through isokinetic tests before and after the 8-week training. The torque at 0.18 sec showed a significant increase in the 50s group. There was no significant difference in acceleration time according to time and group. The torque at 30° showed a significant increase in the 30s group. In conclusion, 8 weeks resistance training can increase neuromuscular activity in adults in their 50s group, and changes in training variables are needed to increase torque at 30° that affects knee stabilization in adults over 40s group.
Objective: In this study, we compared the key indices of isokinetic tests for knee joint extension and flexion according to the presence or absence of pain in elite athletes with past knee and thigh injuries. Design: Crossed-sectional study Methods: This study was conducted on 33 elite athletes. The elite athletes who participated in this study were divided into a group with pain and a group without pain due to past knee and thigh injuries. The subjects in each group performed an isokinetic muscle strength test for knee joint extension and flexion. After the isokinetic muscle strength test, the main indices of the isokinetic test were compared between the pain group and the non-pain group. Results: In the comparison of the pain group and the non-pain group for 60°/s knee flexion and extension in elite athletes, there was a significant difference only in the torque max average/kg for knee extension. However, there was no statistically significant difference in all other variables. The comparison of the pain group and the non-pain group for 240°/s also showed a significant difference in the torque max average/kg for knee extension, and there was no statistically significant difference in all other variables. Conclusions: In subjects who have experienced previous knee or thigh injuries and have mild pain during strong isokinetic strength tests, torque average/kg is affected, but other strength variables are not affected. Therefore, it would be good to consider this aspect and use it as a basis for testing and training elite athletes.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of static stretching and Evjenth-Hamberg stretching on isokinetic muscle strength of knee flexors and extensors. Methods: The subjects were composed of eighty healthy males without weight-training experience. ROM of knee joint measured active maximal extension and isokinetic Peak Torque measured $60^{\circ}/sec,\;120^{\circ}/sec$ using an the En-Knee. Three tests(Baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, respectively) was operated to examine change of each variable. Data were analyzed with a $2{\times}3$ analysis of variance ($group{\times}test$) for repeated measures on last factor by SPSS package 10.0. The data analysis revealed muscle strength were dependent on stretching method. Results: The results were as follows. First, Evjenth-Hamberg stretching(E-HS) was more effective than static stretching(SS) on ROM. Second, Peak Torque of knee flexors and extensors was improved in both methods by each time. but E-HS was more improved than SS. Conclusion: In conclusion, This study indicates that E-HS is more efficient than SS on muscle strength improvement.
[Purpose] This study aimed to investigate the effects of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplement on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) by analyzing the maximum muscle strength and indicators of muscle damage. [Methods] Twelve men with majors in physical education were assigned to the BCAA group and placebo group in a double-blinded design, and repeated measurements were conducted. DOMS was induced with an isokinetic exercise. Following BCAA administration, the changes in the knee extension peak torque, flexion peak torque, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentrations were analyzed. The maximum knee muscle strength was measured at the baseline (pre-D0) following BCAA administration for 5 days before exercise (-D5, -4D, -3D, -2D, -1D). In contrast, the post-treatment measurements (D3) were recorded after BCAA administration for 3 days (post-D0, D1, D2). Blood samples were obtained before (pre-D0), immediately after (post-D0), 24 h (D1), 48 h (D2), and 72 h (D3) after the exercise to analyze the indicators of muscle strength. BCAA was administered twice daily for 8 days (5 days and 3 days before inducing DOMS and during the experimental period, respectively). [Results] There was no difference in the flexion peak torque between the groups. However, the BCAA group showed a significantly higher extension peak torque at D3 (second isokinetic exercise), compared to the placebo group (p<.05). There was no difference in AST changes between the groups. Nonetheless, the CK and LDH were significantly reduced in the BCAA group, compared to the placebo group. There was no correlation between the extension peak torque and flexion peak torque. However, the CK and LDH increased proportionately in DOMS. Moreover, their concentrations significantly increased with a decreasing peak torque (p<.01). [Conclusion] An exercise-induced DOMS results in a decrease in the peak torque and a proportional increase in the CK and LDH concentrations. Moreover, the administration of BCAA inhibits the reduction of the extension peak torque and elevation of CK and LDH concentrations. Therefore, BCAA might be administered as a supplement to maintain the muscle strength and prevent muscle damage during vigorous exercises that may induce DOMS in sports settings.

Pest-ooperative subjects has lower values for angle of peak torque than normal subjects in trunk extensors, and there are significant differences with statistic value at $60^{\circ}/sec$ and $120^{\circ}/sec$ between two groups. 3. Post-operative subjects has higher values for endurance ratios than normal subjects in trunk extensors and flexors, but there are no significant differences with statistic value between two groups. 4. Post-operative subjects has higher values than normal subjects in peak torque ratios, total work ratios, average power ratios of trunk flexors to trunk extensors, and there are significant differences with statistic value between two groups(p<0.01). 5. There is significant positive-correlation with statistic valve between peak torque and height and body weight in normal subjects(p<0.05), but Thjere is significant negative-correlation between peak torque of trunk extensor at $120^{\circ}/sec$ and age (p<0.05). 6. There is significant positive-correlation with statistic value between peak torque of trunk flexors and body weight in post-operative subjects (p<0.05), but There is significant negative-correlation between peak torque of trunk extensor add age (p<0.05). In conclusion, post-operative subjects have greater weakness in trunk musculature than normal subjects, especially there is more significant weakness in trunk extensors than in trunk flexors
