  • Introduction: Histone modifications and DNA methylation are the major factors in epigenetic gene regulation. Especially, revealing how histone modifications are related to DNA methylation is one of the challenging problems in this field. In this paper, we address this issue and propose several plausible mechanisms for precise controlling of DNA methylation status at CpG islands. Materials and Methods: To establish the regulatory relationships, we used 38 histone modification types including H2A.Z and CTCF, and DNA methylation status at CpG islands across chromosome 6, 20, and 22 of human CD4+ T cell. We utilized Bayesian network to construct regulatory network. Results and Discussion: We found several meaningful relationships supported by previous studies. In addition, our results show that histone modifications can be clustered into several groups with different regulatory properties. Based on those findings we predicted the status of methylation level at CpG islands with high accuracy, and suggested core-regulatory network to control DNA methylation status.

  • This study researches the relationship between the Folk houses in Heung Yang-islands and the Ulleung-island Folk Houses in Modern Age. Fork houses reflect cultural and geographical features synthetically and concretely. Fork houses contain the thoughts of residents and have been built rationally and economically, therefore studying fork houses is a very meaningful task. This study has a focus on the elements which influenced fork houses of Ulleungdo at the time when fork houses were constructed officially. There have been studies on fork houses of Ulleungdo limited in embrasive characteristics, space construction and arrangement. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate about the element and background of Ulleung-island Folk Houses in Modern Age.

  • The southwestern islands of Japan, especially southward from Amamioshima Island, have distinguished sets of nature and culture. However, various problems are arising on those islands. This report first introduces island characteristics as well as, their status briefly. Then it introduces conservation efforts. Since nature and culture are closely connected in the island system, conservation of the set of nature and culture is essentially important. From this point of view, this report focuses on two efforts. The first example is the effort for designation of a new national park with a new concept of "environmental culture type" and "ecosystem management type" in the Amami Gunto Islands. This effort is a new challenge to focus on the importance of cultural aspects. The second example is the unique effort of the national park visitor center to conserve as one set of integrated nature and culture with an alliance of all stakeholders in Taketomijima Island, Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. The visitor center serves not only visitors, but also islanders. These two cases are good models that suggest hints for future conservation measures.

  • Three floating islands were constructed on the surface of the reservoir, each consisting of 10 16-㎡ (4${\times}$4 m) segments, made of wood frames and floats. Three species of aquatic macrophytes were planted in each island on June, 1998. Phragmites australis was considered as the suitable aquatic macrophyte for the floating islands since it maintained the most efficient root and shoot balance among the macrophytes. The net primary productivity of P. Australis was 3,604 g/㎡ based on dry weight in 1999, with uptake rates of nitrogen and phosphorus estimated at 77.4 g/㎡/yr and 5.7 g/㎡/yr, respectively. The result of water quality simulation for the floating islands showed that, through adsorption of nutrients and light screening, they could reduce the amount of phytoplankton, thereby decreasing COD concentration.

  • Three floating islands have been constructed for water quality improvement for a polluted irrigation reservoir. Phragmites australis was considered as the suitable aquatic macrophyte of the floating island. From April to August in 1999, the net primary productivity of Phragmites australis was 3,530gDM/㎡. Uptake rates of nitrogen and phoshorous by Phragmites australis planted in the floating island could be estimated to 10.2kg/d/ha and 0.8kg/d/ha, respectively. The floating islands worked well as a habitat of fish and prawns. Therefore, the floating islands could be evaluated a good measure ofwater quality improvement for irrigation reservoir.

  • It is desirable to place virtual machines for minimizing the number of operational servers in order to save energy in high-density cloud computing environment. However, the compacted servers can incur heat islands. This paper firstly finds out the relationship between the server utilization by the virtual machine placement and the energy consumption of servers and heat from servers. Then, this paper proposes a virtual machine placement algorithm to save energy consumed and avoid heat islands.

  • Potential tsunamis which may occur near Ryukyu Islands were simulated. Propagation characteristics of the potential tsunamis over the southwestern sea and the influence of tsunamis on the southwestern coast of Korean Peninsula were analyzed. The shallow water area in the east sea of China and the deep water Okinawa Trough play an important role in wave transformation and propagation of the potential tsunamis. The propagation characteristics of the potential tsunamis generated near Ryukyu Islands can be described as in followings : In the first stage after generation, the tsunamis propagate with high speed both northeastward and southwestward along the Okinawa Trough. As a result the waves are elongated and the tsunami height is significantly reduced. The elongated crest of tsunamis spans the whole distance of the Okinawa Trough and lines up toward the edge of the continental shelf of East China Sea. Then, the tsunamis are propagating towards the southeast coast of China. Thus, the influence of tsunamis on the Korean coasts becomes weak.

  • Kinetic behaviors of homoepitaxial growth on Ni(110) surface was studied at the growth-temperature ranges 290~380 K with scanning tunneling microscopy. At low temperature (~290 K), deposited Ni grows layer-by-layer mode in the first several layers with one-dimensional islands but eventually (at > monolayers) forms three-dimensional islands througy the kinetic shortening of the average length of one-dimensional islands. At the intermediat temperature (~340 K), the three-dimensional islands were observed to be I) regular mesa-like structure with high aspect ratio (~1:10) at ~15 monolayer, ii) hut-like structure with low aspect ratio (~1:1.5) at ~35 monolayer, and iii) rounded mound structure at ~55 monolayers, due to the competition of kinetic and energetic terms. At the high temperature (~ 380 K), the flat surface with layer-by-layer mode was observed up to 50 monolayers. Microscopic orgins for the observations will be discussed on the basis of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations.

  • An attempt has been made to summarize some of the unique geotechnical problems encountered during construction of a few large man-made islands recently completed off the coast of Osaka Bay, Japan. Large settlements appear to be the most serious problem both during and after construction. Settlements due to consolidation of a thick layer of soft alluvial clay that constitutes seabed seem to virtually cease within a relatively short period of time when vertical drains are installed adequately prior to fill placement. Settlements due to compression of underlying thick diluvial deposits consisting of layers of stiff clays interbedded with coarse-grained soils, however, continue over a prolonged period of time and call for special provisions for structures built on the artificial islands to cope with relatively large future settlements. Although accurate settlement prediction is not possible, it is both technically and economically feasible, nevertheless, to construct large-scale islands. Partjcularly attractive and promising is creation of sizable new areas for various purposes, immediately adjacent to highly-developed, densely-populated cities situated along the coast such as those around Osaka Bay.
