Volcanic rocks in Jeju island show vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors, and indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region. Previous studies on the volcanic rocks in Jeju island have been actively conducted on geological and chemical properties in terms of geophysics and geology and on physical and mechanical properties in terms of engineering. But comprehensive comparative analysis on physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island is not conducted. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks in Jeju island were compared and analyzed comprehensively through the existing research papers and reports about volcanic rocks in Jeju island. As a result, it was found that the relationship between absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity is commonly linear and could be represented as two different linear approximations. In addition, it was found that the relationship between P-wave velocity and S-wave velocity and the relationship between absorption (porosity) and uniaxial compressive strength could be classified more clearly, considering two different linear relationships in absorption (porosity) and apparent specific gravity.
This study reports the results about the petrography of volcanic rocks in Namoo island and Namhyeongje island, off the southern coast of Busan City. The rocks in the Namhyeongje island composed of dacitic crystal-vitric welded tuff, showing phenocrysts of plagioclase, rock fragment with flow structure of elongated and flattened pumice fragments. In thin section it shows pyroclastic texture. The volcanic rocks in Namoo island are mainly dark grey-bluish dacite with phenocrysts of plagioclase and gradually changed to pink-greyish rhyodacite with auto-brecciated. In the northeastern part of the island, the volcanic rocks occurred as aggromerate with a poorly sorted mixture of blocks, lappili and ash and felsic feeder dike intrude the aggromerate. Major element composition of the volcanic rocks in Namhyeongje island and Namoo island are $SiO_2$ 73.6~74.4 wt.% and 65.5~68.3 wt.%, respectively. The volcanic rocks in these island are felsic volcanic rocks.
Dok island comprises Pliocene volcanic products such as a series of volcanoclastic rocks and lavas ranging in composition from alkali basalts, and trachyandesites to trachytes. Compositional variation of the basaltic rocks can be attributed to fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite. Chemical variations among the trachyandesites are caused by fractionation of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite with minor amphibole, while trachytes are controlled mainly by feldspar fractionation. Incompatible element abundance ratios and chondrite normalized LREE/HREE ratios (e.g., (La/Yb)c: 24.8 to 32.8 for basalts, 15.6 to 31.2 for trachyandesites) suggest that the origins of the basalts and trachyandesites involve both different degrees of partial melting and subsequent fractional crystallization processes. Trace element ratios of the basalts from Dok island are characterized by high Ba/Nb, La/Nb, Ba/Th and Th/U and isotopic ratios (Tasumoto and Nakamura, 1991) that are similar to the EM 1 type of oceanic island basalts such as Gough and Tristan da Cunha basalts.
Volcanic rocks in Jeju Island have vesicular structure caused by various environmental factors, and indicate the differences in geological and mechanical characteristics from region to region. In addition, the bedrock of Jeju Island shows stratified structure, that is, soft layers composed of pyroclastic rocks or cavities are irregularly developed between the basalt layers by several times of volcanic activity. In this study, various physical tests and unconfined compressive strength test were conducted for intact rocks sampled in northwestern onshore and offshore of Jeju Island. The results obtained in the tests were compared with the physical and mechanical characteristics of intact rocks sampled in southeastern offshore of Jeju Island. As a results, it was confirmed that the physical and mechanical characteristics of basalts sampled in northwestern Jeju Island were similar to those of basalts sampled in southeastern offshore of Jeju Island. In addition, it was possible to estimate approximate design parameters from the correlation of mechanical properties with physical properties of basalts in Jeju Island.
Article 121 of the UNCLOS stipulates the regime of islands and grants different jurisdictions to islands and rocks. Especially, paragraph 3 gives different definitions and distinguishes the legal status of between islands and rocks. That is, rocks, which cannot sustain human habitation or economic life cannot have their own EEZ, continental shelf or the great-sphere maritime jurisdiction. In this paper various theories and state practicess on islands and rocks are examined with reference to Article 121 of UNCLOS. Also, the status of Dokdo as a rock or an island is examined in accordance with the interpretation of Article 121 of UNCLOS. National legislations, practices, and many scientific opinions are often contradictory and controversial with respect to the interpretation of Article 121 of the UNCLOS. However, it is believed that Article 121 of UNCLOS, particularly paragraph 3 has to be interpreted more strictly. That is because the highly developed modem scientific technology can be meaningless when the criteria of Article 121 of UNCLOS are to be inappropriately applied. Insular figures like ${\ulcorner}rocks{\lrcorner}$ could bring the inequitable effects disadvantageous toward the other party when the maritime delimitation is applied. Claiming and Intentionally extending maritime zone of a coastal states by assigning EEZ for small insular figures like ${\ulcorner}rocks{\lrcorner}$ is over-zealous nationalism which is illegal, and such practices must be recognized as actions bringing great harm to the neighboring nations and demise of the sprit of all mankind.
One hundred of thirty volcanic rocks col1ected from the Jeju island, Jeongog, Guryongpo and other areas were analyzed for major elements and trace elements with Au by inductively coupled argon plasma and graphite furnace atomic absorptiom spectrometry. The Au content is the highest values (0.2~43.4 ppb, average; 10.34 ppb) from the Jeju island volcanic rocks and the lowest (0.5~11.0 ppb, average; 1.23 ppb) from the Guryongpo volcanic area. The content of Au tends to be higher in the Quarternary volcanic rocks than Tertiary or Cretaceous volcanic rocks. The Au content of the calc alkali volcanic rocks tends to increase from mafic to felsic volcanic rocks, but that of the alkalic volcanic rocks tends to increase from felsic to mafic volcanic rocks. The Au content of the volcanic rocks collected from the Jeju island shows the highest values in the feldspar olivine basalts. Elements or oxides which have positive or negative correlations with Au are Ag, Mo, Rb, V, Y, $K_2O$, MgO and $SiO_2$, but other elements analyzed are not shown correlations with Au. It has a tendency to show that samples from the Jeju with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the non-Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the Dupal area, while those from the Jeongog with 5 ppb gold and more are plotted in the Dupal area and those with less than 5 ppb gold in the non-Dupal area, in the Ba/Nb-La/Nb, Zr/Nb-Ba/Nb diagrams. It shows that samples from the Jeju and Guryongpo with high gold content are plotted in the within-plate, while those with low gold content are plotted in the arc-related area, and those from the Jeongog are scattered in the $TiO_2-Al_2O_3$, $Zr/A1_2O_3-TiO_2/Al_2O_3$ diagrams.
In this study, to propose simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island using uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength, the estimated values of cohesion and internal friction angle from triaxial and uniaxial compression tests and Brazilian tests were compared in terms of estimation accuracy. This study proposed simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle using the uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island. According to the findings, among the proposed simplified methods, the method using uniaxil compressive strength was most desirable to accurately estimate the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic intact rocks in Jeju Island.
This study focuses on the petrography and petrochemical characteristics of the volcanic and plutonic rocks in Gadeog island, Busan, Korea. Based on textural and mineralogical characteristics, intermediate volcanic rocks can be divided into andesitic lava flows (porphyritic and massive andesites) and andesitic pyroclastics. Felsic volcanic rocks are composed of rhyolite, rhyolitic welded tuff, and tuff breccia. Plutonic rocks are intruded rhyolite and andesitic rocks, and composed of hornblende granodiorite which contains lots of mafic magma enclaves. Volcanic rocks are composed of andesite, dacite and rhyolite having a range in SiO$_2$ from 59 to 78wt.%. The volcanic rocks belong to the calc-alkaline rock series. Plutonic rocks have a range in SiO$_2$ from 63 to 69wt.%. This compositional variations correspond to those of Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks in the southeastern Gyeongsang basin. The trace element composition and rare earth element patterns of the volcanics, which are characterized by high LREE/HFSE ratios and enrichment in LREE, suggest that they are typical of calc-alkaline volcanic rocks produced in the subduction environment around continental arc. We concluded that volcanic and plutonic rocks in Gadeog Island were evolved from orogenic andesitic magma which was produced by partial melting of the mantle wedge in the subduction environment.
Socheong island is a unique island containing Precambrian stromatolites in South Korea. Most of Socheong stromatolites are domes and columns, occurring as 10 cm to 1 m thick stromatolite beds. Lower parts of the stromatolite beds are predominantly composed of domes, but columns increase toward the upper level of stromatolite beds. In many of the stromatolite beds, inclined columns are easily identifiable, which is generally considered as a result of heliotropism. From general lithology, sedimentary structures, inclined angles and distributional pattern, and structural deformation of sedimentary rocks of Socheong island, the inclination of Socheong stromatolites could be better interpreted as a secondary structural deformation probably after formation of stromatolite columns, rather than as a result of heliotropism. However, at this moment, we do not clearly reject heliotropism interpretation for inclined columns of Socheong stromatolites. This is because the original position of stromatolite columns could have been lost if structural deformation had affected the whole sedimentary rocks of Socheong island.
Strongly weathered granitic rocks are widely distributed in the south-eastern part of the Ganghwa island. Kaolinite developed during intense weathering on this granitic rocks have been studied mineralogically and chemically. Various weathering indexes were ca1culated on the basis of oxide. Those indexes are slightly varied with depth. It shows that the percentages of $Al_2O_3$ increase but that of $CaO+Na_2O+K_2O$ decrease as the weathering progress. These results indicate that day minerals, mainly kaolinite with the appreciable amount of halloysite, were formed by the weathering of feldspars in the granitic rocks. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, infrared spectrometry and electron microscopy were used to characterize and estimate crystallinity of the kaolinite. Generally, Kaolinite shows a less sharp basal reflection and relatively low dehydroxylation temperature, indicating disordered kaolinite. They usually occur aggregates as a vermicular kaolinites showing loose basal plane stacking arrangement.
