  • Large amount of water is diverted annually for irrigation along the Yellow River. Owing to the tremendous sediment carried by the river , sediment deposits is an important problem in irrigation and drainage system. The sediment has to be taken out by machines from the irrigation system, otherwise water can not be available in the right place at the right time. In order to improve the sediment desilting efficiency, the sediments that settle in certain sites of a irrigation system must be removed by different desilting machines with special performance and working conditions. Those certain sites include : the diversion canal in the flood plain , the mouth of inlet, settling basin , irrigation and drainage system. In view of removal sediment above, the paper presents the ideas of type selection of desilting machines applied to certain sites. Proposals of making further improvement on performance for some desilting machines are also put forward.

  • In agricultural systems, significant amount of energy is consumed during irrigation periods. Therefore operating irrigation systems with electrical energy produced by solar energy is very important. It is be possible to operate irrigation systems which have small-pump power like drip-irrigation with electrical energy produced by solar energy. Electrical energy produced by photovoltaic panels can vary from the estimated value due to environmental factors. Consequently analysis of a real system's performance is important. Thus, more correct projections can be made for the systems which will be designed. In this study, induction motor-pump mechanism for drip-irrigation system is operated with photovoltaic generator. Solar energy capacity of the established system is evaluated by measurements in irrigation periods. By means of simulations, power values produced by system and gained from the actual system are compared. Additionally the performance of induction motor is analyzed with the help of the driver system that increases the efficiency and controls the motor. As regards of results, design values of the drip-irrigation systems fed with solar energy in Southeastern Anatolian Regions of Turkey are obtained. Performance results of induction motor controlled with driver are also provided.

  • Water for crop growth were supplied by irrigation in protected cultivation and these are accumulated in the soil and utilized for crop evapotranspiration. The study for analyzing soil moisture characteristics is necessary for adequate irrigation water and soil water management in protected cultivation. Soil moisture content, irrigation water quantity and meteorological data were monitored to analyze soil moisture increment and extraction characteristics in terms of soil layers and cucumber crop growth stages. In first cropping period, the total amount of irrigation water was 5.07 mm/day, soil moisture increment was 4.82 mm/day and soil moisture extraction was 5.56 mm/day. In second cropping period, the total amount of irrigation water was 4.82 mm/day, soil moisture increment was 4.65 mm/day and soil moisture extraction was 4.73 mm/day. Soil moisture extraction rate from 0 to 75 cm is 90.3 % in first cropping period and 79.1 % in second cropping period. The majority irrigation water were consumed in root zone, however, about 15 % of soil moisture were losses by infiltration in lower soil layer. Soil moisture extraction and extraction pattern of cucumber crop calculated in this study can be utilized as a basic data for irrigation water management in protected cultivation.

  • The effect of the particle size of perlite and irrigation amount on the growth, root activity and mineral competition of tomato was investigated in a recycling system. The particle sizes used were small (SPP, øl∼2 mm), medium (MPP, ø2∼3 mm), (LPP. ø4∼5 mm). Plant height, fresh weight and dry weight of tomato at the earlier growth stage were good at 3.0 L/day in MPP and LPP, but these were not significantly affected by irrigation amount in MPP, Fruit number, weight and yield increased at 1.5 L/day in SPP and 3.0 L/day at MPP or LPP, Deformed fruits tended to increase at higher irrigation amounts regardless of particle size. Root activity increased with increasing particle size with higher irrigation amount during early stage after transplanting, but remarkably decreased at 3.0 L/day in SPP as compared with the others at 100 days. Mineral contents of plants after harvest were higher at MPP and LPP than SPP, but were highest at 3.0 L/day in LPP. In conclusion, it was regarded that tomato growth in a recycling system was optimal at MPP or LPP with irrigation amount of B.0 L/day.

  • Crop damages due to agricultural drought has been increased in recent years. In Korea, water resources are limited indicating that proper management plans against agricultural drought are required for better water-use efficiency in agriculture. In this study, irrigation intervals and amounts for various crops and soil physical properties (sandy and silt loams) were estimated using the IWMM model. Five different crops (soybean, radish, potato, barley and maize) at the Bangdong-ri site in Chuncheon were selected to test the IWMM model. IWMM assessed agricultural drought conditions using the soil moisture deficit index (SMDI), and irrigation intervals and amounts were determined based on the degree of agricultural drought (SMDI). Additionally, we tested the effects of surface irrigation and sprinkler irrigation methods and various irrigation intervals of 2, 3, 5 and 7 days. In our findings, the irrigation intervals of 5 and 7 days showed the minimum rrigation amounts than others. When we considered that the intervals of 3 or 5 days are usually preferred to fields, the interval of 5 days was determined in our study. The estimated irrigation amounts for different crops were shown as maize > radish > barley > soybean > potato, respectively. The irrigation amounts for maize and barley were highly affected by soil properties, but other crops have less differences. Also, small differences in irrigation amounts were shown between the surface and sprinkler irrigation methods. These might be due to the lack of consideration of water loss (e.g., evapotranspiration, infiltration, etc.) in IWMM indicating model structural uncertainties. Thus, possible water loss (e.g., evapotranspiration, infiltration) need to be considered in application to fields. Overall, IWMM performed well in determining the irrigation intervals and amounts based on the degree of agricultural drought conditions (SMDI). Thus, the IWMM model can be useful for efficient agricultural water resources management in regions at where available water resources are limited.

  • The effect of reclaimed water irrigation on paddy rice culture was evaluated by pilot study at the experimental field of Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea. The sewage was treated by constructed wetland system, and its effluent was used as irrigation water for four treatments and one control plots with three replications. Irrigation of reclaimed water onto paddy rice cultures did not adversely affect the growth and yield of rice. Instead, experimental rice plots of reclaimed water irrigation displayed about 10 to 50% more yield on average than controls. This implies that reclaimed water irrigation might be beneficial rather than harmful to rice culture as long as the sewage is treated adequately and used properly. The amount of irrigation water had little effect on experimental rice cultures, but its strength was important. The strength of treated sewage was not a limiting factor in this study, and no lodging was observed even with a relatively high nitrogen concentration (up to 160mg/L). In general the paddy soil was not affected by reclaimed water irrigation. However, there was an indication that continuous irrigation with high strength of reclaimed water might cause salt accumulation in the soil. Supplemental use of reclaimed water with existing sources of irrigation water is recommended rather than irrigation with a single source of reclaimed water. Overall, the results demonstrated that reclaimed water could be reused as a supplemental source of irrigation water for paddy rice culture without causing adverse effects as long as it is properly managed. For full-scale application, further investigation should be done on environmental risks, tolerable water quality, and fraction of supplemental irrigation.

  • With the implementation of integrated water management policies, the need for information sharing with respect to agricultural water use has increased, necessitating the quantification of irrigation water supply using monitoring data. This study aims to estimate the irrigation water supply amount based on the relationship between the water level and irrigation canal discharge, and evaluate the reliability of monitoring data for irrigation water supply in terms of hydrology. We conducted a flow survey in a canal and reviewed the applicability of the rating curve based on the exponential and parabolic curves. We evaluated the reliability of the monitoring data using a reservoir water balance analysis and compared the calculated results of the supply quantity in terms of the reservoir water reduction rate. We secured 26 readings of measurement data by varying the water levels within 80% of the canal height through water level control. The exponential rating curve in the irrigation canal was found to be more suitable than the parabolic curve. The irrigation water supplied was less than 9.3-28% of the net irrigation water from 2017 to 2019. Analysis of the reservoir water balance by applying the irrigation water monitoring data revealed that the estimation of the irrigation water supply was reliable. The results of this study are expected to be used in establishing an evaluation process for quantifying the irrigation water supply by using measurement information from irrigation canals in agricultural reservoirs.

  • For optimal reservoir operation and management, there are essential elements including water supply in agricultural reservoir and demand in irrigation district. To estimate agricultural water demand and supply, many factors such as weather, crops, soil, growing conditions cultivation method and the watershed/irrigation area should be considered, however, there are occurred water supply impossible duration under the influence of the variability and uncertainty of meteorological and hydrological phenomenon. Focusing on agricultural reservoir, amount and tendency of agricultural water supply and demand shows seasonally/regionally different patterns. Through the analysis of deviation and changes in the timing of the two elements, duration in excess of water supply can be identified quantitatively. Here, we introduce an approach to assessment of irrigation vulnerable duration for effective management of agricultural reservoir using time dependent change analysis of residual water supply and irrigation water requirements. Irrigation vulnerable duration has been determined through the comparison of water supply in agricultural reservoir and demand in irrigation district based on the water budget analysis, therefore can be used as an improved and basis data for the effective and intensive water management.

  • An experiment was carried out using pots to investigate the effects of Chinese milk vetch on the seedling establishment and growth in rice. Four irrigations with five-day intervals and three different levels of vetch straw were investigated. Significantly higher panicle numbers were obtained in vetch-treated pots. Vetch levels were non-treatment as checks, vetch with top removed, root plus shoot 7.5 ton/ha, and root plus shoot 3.0 ton/ha. The time for complete degradation of vetch straws was reduced from 10 days to 5 days as submerged time was delayed, and was affected by the amount of mulched vetch straws. As the mulched vetch amount increased, the time for a complete degradation was extended from 4 days to 12 days. Grain yield and its components were significantly affected by irrigation time and mulched vetch amount. Effectively controlled, lowered reduction damage from the degrading vetch straw, irrigation date and vetch amount were the most important factors for the improving of seedling establishment in direct-sown rice.
