  • This paper deals with the exact solution of surface gravity waves in an ocean with irregular bed topography. In order to obtain water surface elevation and run-up of infra-gravity waves when the bed is either wavy or exponential, closed form solutions are obtained. Numerical computations indicate that when solitary wave or sinusoidal wave conditions are applied at the boundary, water surface elevation attains near Gaussian profile.

  • This paper presents an efficient control algorithm that removes irregular burrs using vision and force sensors. In automated robotic deburring, the reference force should be accommodated to the profile of burrs in order to prevent the tool breakage. In this paper, (1) The profile of burrs is recognized by vision sensor and followed by the calculation of reference force, (2) Deburring expert's skill is transferred to robot. Finally, the performance of robot is evaluated through simulation and experiment.

  • In general, a method for generating irregular wave by combination of component waves obtained from linear wave theory is widely used. In these method, however, mean water surface elevation is rising from time to time because of nonlinear effect of wave. In this study, for the rising problem of mean water surface elevation and stabilization of calculation from time to time, mass transport velocity for horizontal velocity at wave source position is considered. The rising problem of mean water surface elevation is checked by comparing calculated wave profile from numerical technique proposed in this study with target wave profile at wave source position in numerical wave tank by using CADMAS-SURF code. And, by generating irregular wave, the validity of wave overtopping rate estimated from this numerical analysis is discussed by comparing computed results with measured results in hydraulic model experiments for vertical seawall located on a sloping sea bottom. As a results, the computations are validated against the previously experimental results by hydraulic model test and numerical results of this study and a good agreement is observed. Therefore, numerical technique of this study is a powerful tool for estimating wave overtopping rate over the crest of coastal structure.

  • Dynamic wedge system has been introduced to modify the beam profile and to make homogeneous isodose curves in the mass of irregular shape. Before the clinical use of dynamic wedge, several factors such as wedge transmission factor, dose profile, percent depth dose, and wedge angle have to be measured quantitatively. Film dosimetry is used to evaluate these factors in this study. A comparison of the result of the dynamic wedge to physical wedge system is made. A positive result for the application of the dynamic wedge to clinic is derived even though there is a limitation in accuracy of the dosimetry system used. To measure all factors quantitatively, more accurate dosimetry systems are required.

  • Fractal geometry is a non-Euclidean geometry which has been developed to quantitative analysis irregular or fractional shapes. Fractal dimension of irregular surface has fractal values ranging from 2 to 3 and of irregular line profile has fractal values ranging from 1 to 2. In this paper, quantitative analysis of crack growth patterns during the fracture processing of fiber-reinforced cement composites based on fractal geometry. The fracture behaviors of fiber reinforced mortar beams subjected to three-point loading in flexure. The beams all had a single notch depth, but varing volume fractions of polypropylene, cellulose fibers. The crack growth behaviors, as observed through the image processing system, and the box counting method was used to determine the fractal dimension, Df. The results showed that the linear correlation exists between fractal dimension and fracture energy of the fiber reinforced cement mortar.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze motion-induced dose error generated by each tumor motion parameters of irregular tumor motion in helical tomotherapy. To understand the effect of the irregular tumor motion, a simple analytical model was simulated. Moving cases that has tumor motion were divided into a slightly irregular tumor motion case, a large irregular tumor motion case and a patient case. The slightly irregular tumor motion case was simulated with a variability of 10% in the tumor motion parameters of amplitude (amplitude case), period (period case), and baseline (baseline case), while the large irregular tumor motion case was simulated with a variability of 40%. In the phase case, the initial phase of the tumor motion was divided into end inhale, mid exhale, end exhale, and mid inhale; the simulated dose profiles for each case were compared. The patient case was also investigated to verify the motion-induced dose error in 'clinical-like' conditions. According to the simulation process, the dose profile was calculated. The moving case was compared with the static case that has no tumor motion. In the amplitude, period, baseline cases, the results show that the motion-induced dose error in the large irregular tumor motion case was larger than that in the slightly irregular tumor motion case or regular tumor motion case. Because the offset effect was inversely proportion to irregularity of tumor motion, offset effect was smaller in the large irregular tumor motion case than the slightly irregular tumor motion case or regular tumor motion case. In the phase case, the larger dose discrepancy was observed in the irregular tumor motion case than regular tumor motion case. A larger motion-induced dose error was also observed in the patient case than in the regular tumor motion case. This study analyzed motion-induced dose error as a function of each tumor motion parameters of irregular tumor motion during helical tomotherapy. The analysis showed that variability control of irregular tumor motion is important. We believe that the variability of irregular tumor motion can be reduced by using abdominal compression and respiratory training.

  • The straightness property is one of fundamental geometric tolerances to be strictly controlled for guideways of machine tools and measuring machines. The staightness measurement for long guideways was usually difficult to perform, and it needed additional equipments or special treatment with limited application. In this paper, a new approach is proposed using the profile matching technique for the long guideways, which can be applicable to most of straghtness measurements. An edge of relativelly sthort length is located along a divided section of a long guideway, and the local straightness measurement is performed. The edge is then moved to the next section with several positions overlap. After thelocal straightness profile is measured for every section along the long guideway with overlap, the global straightness profile is constructed using the profile matching technique based on theleast squares method. The proposed techinique is numerically tested for two cases of known global straightness profile arc profile and irregular profile and those profiles with and without random error intervention, respectively. When norandom errors are involved, the constructed golval profile is identical to the original profile. When the random errors are involved, the effect of the number of overlap points are investigated, and it is also found that the difference between the difference between the constructed and original profiles is very close to the limit of random uncertainty with juist few overlap points. The developed technique has been practically applied to a vertical milling machine of moving table type, and showed good performance. Thus the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated, and shows great potential for variety of application for most of straightness measuirement cases using straight edges, laser optics, and angular measurement equipments.

  • The skewness of near-bottom velocity distribution caused by the nonlinear interaction of the second order waves proposed by Wells (1967) has been re-evaluated. The direction of cross-shore sediment transport was related to the sign of the third moment (skewness) of velocity distribution, and a new concept of neutral depth which can explain the recovery of beach equilibrium after a disturbance is suggested. The seasonal change of beach profile due to the change of wave condition (storm-swell profile) is interpreted in terms of nonlinear interaction of the waves rather than the conventional wave steepness. The beach is eroded (storm profile) when the nonlinear interaction of the waves is strong (storm wave), whereas the beach is accreted (swell profile) when the nonlinear interaction is weak (swell wave).

  • This study evaluates the variation characteristics of irregular wave fields for two-dimensional Low-Crested Structure (LCS) by olaFlow model based on the two-phases flow by numerical analysis. The numerical results of olaFlow model are verified by comparing irregular wave profile of target wave spectrum and measured one, and their spectra. In addition, spacial variation of irregular wave spectrum, wave transmission ratio, root-mean square wave height, time-averaged velocity and time-averaged turbulent kinetic energy by two-dimensional LCS are discussed numerically. The time-averaged velocity, one of the most important numerical results is formed counterclockwise circulating cell and clockwise nearshore current on the front of LCS, and strong uni-directional flow directing onshore side around still water level.
