Physiological Characterization of Mono-Cotyledonous Model Plant by Ionizing Irradiation (단자엽 모델 식물의 이온화 에너지원에 따른 생리 활성)

  • The present study has been performed to compare the physiological analysis of monocot model plant (rice) in response to ionizing irradiations (cosmic-ray, gamma-ray, and Ion beam). Ionizing radiations were implanted into monocot model plant (rice) seed. After irradiation, the seeds were planted in the plastic pots for a growth period of one month. Thereafter, the morphological and physiological characteristics including malondealdehyde (MDA) and chlorophyll content, activities of antioxidant enzymes in irradiation samples were investigated. We are confirmed that the activity level of MDA and chlorophyll content were not changed by ionizing irradiation samples. However, the free radical contents were increased in all irradiated plants. And the activities of SOD, POD, and APX were significantly increased by irradiation compared with non-irradiation plant.

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Structural and Physiological Properties of Silk Fibroin

  • This study was conducted to examine the changes in the molecular structure and physiological activities of silk fibroin by gamma irradiation. The results of gel permeation chromatography and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the molecular weight of fibroin was increased depending upon the irradiation dose. Secondary structure of fibroin determined by using circular dichroism revealed that the ratio of $\alpha$-helix was increased up to 10 kGy and then decreased depending upon the irradiation dose. Whereas, the ratio of $\beta$-sheet, $\beta$-turn, and random coil were decreased and then increased with an alteration in the $\alpha$-helix secondary conformation. The 2.2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of fibroin was increased by gamma irradiation at 5 kGy, but was decreased above 10 kGy depending upon the irradiation dose. Also, the inhibition activities of tyrosinase and melanin synthesis of fibroin were increased by gamma irradiation. These results indicated that gamma irradiation could be used as an efficient method to make fibroin more suitable for the development of functional foods and cosmetics.

  • A rapid pneumatic transfer system (PTS) for an instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) is developed as an automatic irradiation facility involving the measurement of a short half-life nuclide and a delayed neutron counting system. Three new PTS designs with improved functions were constructed at the HANARO research reactor in 2006. The new system is composed of a manual system and an automatic system for both an INAA and a delayed neutron activation analysis (DNAA). The design and basic conception of a modified PTS are described, and the functions of system operation and control, radiation protection and emissions of radioactive gas are improved. In addition, a form of capsule transportation of these systems is tested. The experimental results pertaining to the irradiation characteristics with variation of the neutron flux and the temperature of the irradiation position with the irradiation time are presented, as is an analysis of the reference material for analytical quality control and uncertainty assessments.

Differential Modulation of Volatile Constituents in Artemisia princeps and Artemisia argyi Plants after Gamma Ray or Electron Beam Irradiation

  • The effects of gamma ray or electron beam irradiation on herbaceous medicinal plants were investigated in terms of the composition of volatile constituents using the aerial parts or leaves of Artemisia princeps Pamp. cv. Ganghwayakssuk and Artemisia argyi cvs. Namhaeyakssuk and Hwanghaessuk. The composition of volatile constituents in leaves was clearly distinguishable among the three Artemisia cultivars. However, the relative proportions of the major volatile constituents such as 1,8-cineole, ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, santolina triene, and artemesia triene, were similarly changed in two or three cultivars by gamma ray or electron beam irradiation. In particular, the proportion of 1,8-cineole was increased up to 1.29- to 1.71-fold in the three cultivars after irradiation with gamma ray. These results suggest that gamma ray or electron beam irradiation can be applied to modulate the composition of volatile constituents in the leaves of Artemisia plants.

  • In Korea, the health authorities and food industry emphasize the need of sanitary food production, which in mainly resulted from the recent growing of consumer's interest in the safety of food. For the reason, development of a new alternative technology to chemicals, currently used for decontamination and disinfestation, has become and urgent task in the domestic and worldwide food industry. Furthermore, the improvement of quality and manufacturing process of processed food is a requisite for winning the competition in export fields. Irradiation technology being practically applicable in the food industry has been well established on the basis of more than 40 years of R&D work in the fields of the increasing availability of food-stuffs, sanitary food production and quarantine treatment in the food trade. The wholesomeness of irradiation foods has been officially approved in 38 countries, of which 30 countries are commercially utilizing food irradiation technology. The first commercial irradiator in Korea(18.5PBq:500k{TEX}$Ci^{60}${/TEX} Co, max. cap; 4MCi) was established at Yeoju-gur, Kyung Ki-do with the technical assistance of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in June 1987. As of 1996, thirteen irradiated food groups (over 25 items)have been domestically approved for human consumption and an industrial irradiation facility is also available. Control of Postharvest Bacterial Soft Rot by Gamma Irradiation and its Potential Modes of Action

  • Gamma irradiation was evaluated for its in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity against a postharvest bacterial pathogen, Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora (Ecc). Gamma irradiation in a bacteria cell suspension resulted in a dramatic reduction of the viable counts as well as an increase in the amounts of DNA and protein released from the cells. Gamma irradiation showed complete inactivation of Ecc, especially at a dose of 0.6 kGy. In addition, scanning electron microscopy of irradiated cells revealed severe damage on the surface of most bacterial cells. Along with the morphological changes of cells by gamma irradiation, it also affected the membrane integrity in a dose-dependent manner. The mechanisms by which the gamma irradiation decreased the bacterial soft rot can be directly associated with the disruption of the cell membrane of the bacterial pathogen, along with DNA fragmentation, results in dose-dependent cell inactivation. These findings suggest that gamma irradiation has potential as an antibacterial approach to reduce the severity of the soft rot of paprika.

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Biological Activities and Color Changes of Ethanol Extracts Lonicera japonica

  • Effects of irradiation on color removal, tyrosinase inhibition, xanthine oxidase inhibition and nitrite scavenging capacity of Lonicera japonica extracts were evaluated. Lonicera japonica extracts were irradiated at 10, 20, and 30 kGy. Hunter color $L^{*}$- and $a^{*}$-values increased but $b^{*}$-values decreased dose-dependently following irradiation. The extracts were potent inhibitors of tyrosinase and xanthine oxidase. Tyrosinase inhibition was higher in the irradiated sample than non-irradiated, and subsequently increased with increasing irradiation doses. The extracts had a higher inhibitory effect against xanthine oxidase, and the effect was not changed by irradiation. Nitrite scavenging capacity was the highest in the extract at pH 1.2, and was not significantly affected by irradiation. These results indicate that gamma irradiation may not influence the biological activities of Lonicera japonica extracts when irradiated up to 30 kGy. Furthermore, color of the extracts can be improved to have improved applicability for the food and cosmetic industries without any adverse change in biological functions.ons.s.

  • Development of renewable energy is promoted to achieve sustainability. So researchers are seeking and developing a new, clean, safe and renewable energy. However, solar energy is an extreme intermittent and inconstant energy source. In order to improve the photovoltaic system efficiency and utilize the solar energy more fully, and the DC power vary with the irradiation, it is necessary to study the characteristics of P-V according to the external factors. This paper presents the analysis of characteristics of P-V according to the irradiation. The results show that the DC power of the photovoltaic system are increased along with the increasing values of irradiation.

Molecular Weight Control of Chitosan Using Gamma Ray and Electron Beam Irradiation

  • Chitosan is a useful natural polymer material in many application fields such as biomaterials, water-treatment, agriculture, medication, and food science. However, the poor solubility limits its application. In this study, the effects of radiation on chitosan were investigated using gamma ray and electron beam irradiation. The chemical structure and molecular weight analysis show similar degradation effects of chitosan powder in both gamma ray and electron beam irradiation. However, the radiation irradiated chitosan in $H_2O$ has a lower molecular weight, since the hydroxyl radicals attack the glycosidic bonds. This effect is more clearly shown in the electron beam irradiation results.
