Background: This study investigated the effects of zoledronic acid (ZA) on radiation-induced bone loss in C3H/HeN mice. Materials and Methods: C3H/HeN mice were divided into sham control and three irradiated groups (3 Gy, gamma ray). The irradiated mice were treated for 12 weeks with vehicle, amifostine (intraperitoneal injection), or ZA (subcutaneous injection). Grip strength, uterus weight, and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) levels were measured. Tibiae were analyzed using micro-computed tomography. Results and Discussion: Treatment of ZA ($100{\mu}g{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}week^{-1}$) significantly preserved trabecular bone volume, trabecular thickness, trabecular number, trabecular separation, bone mineral density of proximal tibia metaphysic, and cortical bone volume, but did not alter the uterus weight of the mice. The administration of ZA for 12 weeks lowered serum ALP and TRAP levels in irradiated mice, suggesting that ZA can reduce the bone turnover rate in mice. No differences were apparent between the amifostine-treated group and the irradiation control group. Conclusion: The results indicate that ZA can prevent radiation-induced bone loss in mice.

Kochujang, fermented hot pepper soybean paste, was prepared by traditional method, and irradiated with gamma ray of $^{60}Co{\;}up{\;}to{\;}15{\pm}1.5{\;}kGy$ for confirming main factor of kochujang fermentation. Nonirradiated (control) and irradiated samples kochujang were fermented at $25^{\circ}C$ and analyzed biochemical properties including enzyme activities and viable cell count during fermentation for 60 days. The total viable count in irradiated kochujang decreased to $10^4{\;}CFU/g$ which was $10^8{\;}CFU/g$ in the control. Because of a little changing enzyme activities of ${\alpha}{\cdot}{\beta}{\;}amylase$ and acid neutral protease by irradiation at the above level, amino type nitrogen which is the main quality reference of kochujang was comparable to the control. By irradiation, gas production was completely stopped which is one of biggest problems during distribution of kochujang. Total volume of gas produced at $25^{\circ}C$ from the control kochujang was 453 mL/100 g which was composed of over 90% of $CO_2$. The odor of irradiated kochujang was inferior to the control which seemed to be related to reduced microbial populations.

To analyze biochemical changes of liver function following combined radiotherapy and hyperthermia, we reviewed retrospectively 37 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma treated with radiotherapy and hyperthermia between July 1988 and December 1990 at Department of Radiation Oncology, Yonsei University College of Medicine. Mean age was 52.7 years and male to female ratio was 11:1. The patients were classified as follows; to A and B group by Child's classification, to M and L group by irradiated volume, and subclassified into BM, BL, AM and AL group according to the combination of Child's classification and irradiated volume. Radiation dose to the primary tumor was 3060 cGy with daily 180 cGy, 5 fraction per week using 10 MV or 4 MV linear accelerator. Hyperthermia (Thermotron RF-8) was performed more than 4 times in all patients. Biochemical parameters including albumin (Alb), total bilirubin (T. Bil), aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were regularly followed from 1 week before the treatment to 3 months after the treatment. The results are summerized as follows; 1) In all the patient, mean ALP level peaked at 1 month, decreased at 2 months, slightly increased at 3 months after the treatment. Mean SGOT and SGPT levels peaked at 1 month after the treatment. Mean T. Bil level increased continuously and highest at 3 months after the treatment. Mean Alb level did not show significant changes.; 2) Mean ALP level retured to normal level at 3 month after the treatment in A but increased in B group and the differences were statistically significant (p<0.01). Mean SGOT and SGPT levels peaked 1 month in A and 2 months after the treatment in B group. All the biochemical parameters did not show significant difference between M and L group. Mean ALP level increased at 3 months after the treatment in BM and BL groups and decreased in AM and AL groups. Mean SGOT level increased at 3 months after the treatment in BL groups.; 3) Hepatic failure occurred within 3 months after the treatment in 4 patients, all of whom were in BL group. It is suggested that pre-treatment liver function and irradiated volume influence biochemical changes of liver in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma following combined radiotherapy and hyperthermia, and this treatment modality appears generally to be safe but might cause hepatic failure particularly in patient with poor liver function and large treatment volume.
For the purpose of the biological effect in black mouse by neutron irradiation, mice were irradiated with 16 or 32 Gy neutron (flux: 1.036739E+09) by tying flat pose at BNCT facility on HANARO Reactor. And 90 days later of irradiation, physical changes of testis and testis tissue were examined. There were no weight changes but a little bit volume changes and sperm counts in the testes. Atrophy of seminiferous tubules irradiated with 32 Gy neutron is increased in number and severity and those in stage VI showed depletion of spermatogonia and pachytene spermatocytes compared to the non-irradiated control group. Testis damage of black mouse was not recovered after long time by 32 Gy neutron irradiation.

An anodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique is used to create a uniform TiO2 thin film coating on boiling thin steel plates (1.1 mm by 90 mm). All of the effective parameters except time of the EPD method are kept constant. To investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the critical heat flux (CHF), the test specimens were irradiated in a gamma cell to different doses ranging from 100 to 300 kGy, and then SEM and BET analysis were performed. For each coated specimen, the contact angle and capillary length were measured. The specimens were then tested in a boiling pool for CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient. It was observed that irradiation significantly decreases the maximum pore diameter while it increases the porosity, pore surface area and pore volume. These surface modifications due to gamma irradiation increased the CHF of the nano-coated surfaces compared to that of the unirradiated surfaces. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the nano-coated surfaces irradiated at 300 kGy increased from 83 to 160 kW/(㎡ K) at 885 kW/㎡ wall heat flux by 100%. The CHF of the irradiated (300 kGy) and unirradiated surfaces are 2035 kW/㎡ and 1583 kW/㎡, respectively, an increase of nearly 31%.

Pit and rim formation on the Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene(ABS) plastic surface was evaluated after it was irradiated by $CO_2$ and Nd:YAG laser beams. Our results show that thermal effect floor was well observed at the outer wall of pit with $CO_2$ laser irradiated while it was not the case with Nd:YAG laser irradiated. Also the volume and depth of pit formation increase proportionally with the energy intensities of two laser irradiations, but there are significant differences in the slope, width, and FWHM of the Pit formation with two types of laser irradiations. This result shows that $CO_2$ laser irradiation leads to better cooling contraction effect while Nd:YAG laser irradiation induces better recoil pressure effect during the interaction between ABS plastic and laser beam irradiation. The shape of the laser marking could vary significantly depending on the traveling path of molten plastic during injection molding of ABS plastic. Therefore, the selection of material and molding process can have a great impact on the performance of optical storage media.
The behavior of fission gas in all major types of nuclear fuel has been reviewed with an emphasis on more recently discovered aspects. It is proposed that the behavior of fission gas can be classified in a number of characteristic types that occur at a high or low operating temperature, and/or at high or low fissile burnup. The crystal structure and microstructure of the various fuels are the determinant factors in the proposed classification scheme. Three types of behavior, characterized by anisotropic $\alpha$-U, high temperature metallic $\gamma$-U, and cubic ceramics, are well-known and have been extensively studied in the literature. Less widely known are two equally typical low temperature kinds: one associated with fission induced grain refinement and the other with fission induced amorphization. Grain refinement is seen in crystalline fuel irradiated to high burnup at low temperatures, whereas breakaway swelling is observed in amorphous fuel containing sufficient excess free-volume. Amorphous fuel, however, shows stable swelling if insufficient excess free-volume is available during irradiation.
Mircolens and microlens V-groove are realized using a novel fabrication technology based on the exposure of a resist, usually PMMA, to deep X-rays and subsequent thermal treatment and inclined deep X-ray lithography, respectively. The fabrication technology is very simple and produces microlenses and microlens V-groove with good surface roughness of several nm. The molecular weight and glass transition temperature of PMMA is reduced when it is irradiated with deep X-rays. The microlenses were produced through the effects of volume change, surface tension, and reflow during thermal treatment of irradiated PMMA. Microlenses were produced with diameters ranging from 30 to $1500\mu\textrm{m}$. The surface X-ray mask is also fabricated to realize microlens arrays on PMMA sheet with a large area. The size of the micro V-groove is fabricated in the range of 12~$60\mu\textrm{m}$.

We have investgated UV-Vis absorbance to observe the photoisomerization using the mixture solutions in chloroform and LB monolayers mixed with DLPE and 8A5H containing azobenzene which showed reversible cis-trans photoisomerization irradiated by alternate lights. We have found that the absorbance spectrums of the mixture solutions and LB monolayers were reversibly induced to cis-trans photoisomerization irradiated by alternate lights. In addition, the absorbance of both solution and LB monolayer mixed with 8A5H and DLPE were reversibly by alternate temperatures. As a results, the 1:1(by volume) mixture ratio of 8A5H and DLPE was more flexible and reversible cis-trans photoisomerization than the others.
Radiation-induced second malignancies (RISM) is one of the important late side effects of radiation therapy and has an impact on optimal treatment decision-making. Many factors contribute to the development of RISM such as age at radiation, dose and volume of irradiated area, type of irradiated organ and tissue, radiation technique and individual and family history of cancer. Exact mechanism of RISM is unknown. But nowadays, it is a growing concern in oncology because of the increased number of cancer survivors and efforts are being made to prevent or decrease the incidence of RISM. The primary search for articles was carried via Google Scholar and PubMed with keywords included 'radiation induced malignancies, second malignancies, and chemotherapy induced malignancies'. Additional papers were found through references from relevant articles. In this review article, we have discussed about the pathogenesis, factors contributing to RISM, screening and prevention strategies of RISM.
