An increased population and rapidly expanding industrial development have led to enormous amounts of various domestic and industrial wastes. The proper disposal of ever-increasing wastes is a growing global problem. Land treatment is one of the rational approaches that are environmentally safe and economically practical. It has long been practised in many sites. Recycling of industrial wastes on agricultural land can provide better possible means for maintaining environmental quality and utilizing waste-resources. Even though industrial wastes are beneficial as soil amendment and fertilizer, they have some limitation on land application because of wide variability as well as physicochemical problem in their composition. A direct application of solid and liquid wastes on land is being practised in Korea and some experimental results are presented. The direct application of fermentation waste on rice resulted in a 6 percent yield increase. Another organic residue from glutamic acid fermentation is widely used not only as a direct application as a liquid fertilizer but also for a raw material of organic compound fertilizer. These wastes are much promising as sources of plant nutrients, since they have large amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen with few toxic metals. On the other hand, fertilizers developed from inorganic industrial wastes include calcium silicate, calcium sulfate and ammonium sulfate. The calcium silicate fertilizer simply produced from slag, by-product of iron and steel manufacturing plant is one of the most successful example of the conversion of wastes to fertilizer and slag production capacity totals to over three million MT/year. About 200,000 MT of calcium silicate fertilizer is currently applied in the paddy rice every year. Calcium sulfate, a waste from the wet phosphoric acid process is to some extent used as a filler of compound fertilizers but quite large quantites are directly applied for the reclamation of tidal flat.
Livers of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) were investigated on the food compositional characteristics and also compared to that of Alaska pollack (Theragra chalcogramma). The proximate compositions of skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna livers were high in crude protein, carbohydrate, and crude ash, while were low in crude lipid when compared to that of Alaska pollack liver. The results of heavy metal suggested that tuna livers appeared safe as a food resource. The total amino acid contents of skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna livers were 17.7 and 17.1 g/100 g, respectively, and the major amino acids in both livers were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine, valine, leucine, and lysine. Tuna livers were good sources of iron and zinc, while have low lipid content. The extractive nitrogen contents of skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna livers were 526.5 and 468.2 mg/100 g, respectively, and their major free amino acids were taurine, glutamic acid, and alanine. From the results of taste value, the major taste active compounds among free amino acids were glutamic acid and aspartic acid.

This study compared the nutritional characteristics of seasoned laver Pyropia yezoensis with conger eel Conger myriaster seasoning sauce (SL-CES) with those of commercial seasoned laver (C-SL). SL-CES had higher protein and lower ash contents than those of C-SL. However, the moisture and lipid contents did not differ between them (P>0.05). The total amino acid content of SL-CES was 21.79 g/100 g, similar to that of C-SL (21.49 g/100 g). The major amino acids in SL-CES were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and alanine. The SL-CES contained 125.7 mg calcium, 461.6 mg phosphorus, 2183.7 mg potassium, 9.5 mg iron, and 2.6 mg zinc per 100 g SL-CES. These amounts were all higher than those in C-SL, except for Zn. The major fatty acids in SL-CES were 16:0, 18:1n-9, and 18:2n-6.
$\gamma$-FeOOH suitable for magnetic recording media was synthesized using waste acid which is the by-product of the iron works factory. Effects of concentration of the acid and alkali and reaction temperature on the particle properties of $\gamma$-FeOOH and magnetic properties of $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ were studied. $\gamma$-FeOOH single phase was formed below 1M of acid concentration with 1M of alkali concentration and at 0.4M of acid concentration with 4M of alkali concentration. While the width of acicular particle was increased, the length of acicular particle was decreased with diluting acid concentration. The magnetic properties of the $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ improved with increasing acid concentration. $\gamma$-FeOOH single phase was formed in the temperature range of 30 to $80^{\circ}C$. The length of the particle was decreased with increasing temperature. $\gamma$-Fe2O3 produced from dehydration of $\gamma$-FeOOH showed bad magnetic properties due to the presence of many pores in the particle. But with successive reduction and oxidation of $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ produced from dehydration of $\gamma$-FeOOH, $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ showed good magnetic properties.

Ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) which is by-product of steel industry has been recycled as a cement admixture though the other steel slags are used as aggregates. In this study, the electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) was used as a cement admixture after the reduction of iron oxide in the slag at the interface of molten slag and water quenching. Consequently, the reformed EAFS (REAFS) had higher grindability than that of granulated blast furnace slag. And in mortar tests, the strength properties of specimens using REAFS were 98% of plain specimens of GGBFS upto 20% replacement ratio of GGBFS with REAFS.

This study aimed to compare on sensory and nutritional characteristics between seasoned Laver Pyropia yezoensis with concentrates of octopus Octopus vulgaris cooking effluent (SL-COCE) and commercial seasoned laver (C-SL). Proximate composition of SL-COCE was significantly higher in moisture and ash, lower in lipid than those of C-SL. However, there was no differences in protein between seasoned lavers (P<0.05). The SL-COCE was stronger in sensory appearance, taste, flavor and texture than the C-SL. The SL-COCE was higher in mineral (Ca, P, K, Fe and Zn) than the C-SL. Total amino acid content of SL-COCE was slightly higher than that of C-SL. The major amino acids of SL-COCE were aspartic acid, glutamic acid and alanine. Mineral content based on the 100 g of SL-COCE was 272.3 mg in calcium, 392.2 mg in phosphorus, 1,025.8 mg in potassium, 10.6 mg in iron, 4.4 mg in zinc, which was higher than C-SL. Total content of fatty acid per the 100 g of SL-COCE was 35,098 mg, which was lower than C-SL (39,679 mg). The major fatty acids of SL-COCE were 16:0, 18:1n-9 and 18:2n-6.
In this study, the effect of surface coating on iron-sulfide mineral for preventing the product acid mine drainage(AMD) was progressed by oxidation process of sulfide minerals abandoned mine Area. Three abandoned mines, Yongdong coal mine, Sil Lim mine, and Il Koang mine were selected as a sulfide mineral resource due to higher contamination rate. Six coating agents, apatite, limestone, mangnite, dolomite, bentonite, and cement were used for preventing the AMD with $H_2O_2$ and NaClO as a oxidizing agent helping for oxidizing process on sulfide minerals. Experimental results showed that sulfide mineral surface was coated effectively. Cement has a higher ability of preventing AMD when the ratio of cement to mineralis 1:1 and experimental condition is maintaining 4Days.

This study involves the development of a Hwangto permeable block for rainwater storage tanks. The permeable products that form continuous voids between Hwangto binders and aggregates are fine milled slag powder, which is an industrial by-product generated during the production of Hwangto and iron, and ferro nickel slag. The properties of Hwangto permeable blocks were studied using recycled resource aggregates. The target quality is based on KSF 2394. The Hwangto permeable block for a rainwater storage tank is made of water-permeable material, and the permeability of the Hwangto permeable block itself is 0.1mm/sec or higher, with a physical performance of over 5.0MPa in flexural strength and over 20.0MPa in compressive strength. The physical properties of Hwangto permeable block for rainwater storage tanks were researched and developed. In order to prevent flooding due to heavy rain in summer and the urban heat island phenomenon due to depletion of ground water, continuous pores are formed in the block to secure a permeability function to prevent rainwater from accumulating in the pavement of the floor, and to prevent slippage for comfortable and safe storage.

Water footprint of a product and service is the volume of freshwater used to produce the product, measured in the life cycle or over the full supply chain. Since water footprint assessment helps us to understand how human activities and products relate to water scarcity and pollution, it can contribute to seek a sustainable way of water use in the consumption perspective. For the introduction of WFP scheme, it is indispensable to construct water inventory/accounting for the assessment, but there is no database in Korea to cover all industry sectors. Therefore, the aim of the study is to develop water footprint inventory within a nation at 403 industrial sectors using Input-Output Analysis. Water uses in the agricultural sector account for 79% of total water, and industrial sector have higher indirect water at most sectors, which is accounting for 82%. Most of the crop water is consumptive and direct water except rice. The greatest water use in the agricultural sectors is in rice paddy followed by aquaculture and fruit production, but the greatest water use intensity was not in the rice. The greatest water use intensity was 103,263 $m^3$/million KRW for other inedible crop production, which was attributed to the low economic value of the product with great water consumption in the cultivation. The next was timber tract followed by iron ores, raw timber, aquaculture, water supply and miscellaneous cereals like corn and other edible crops in terms of total water use intensity. In holistic view, water management considering indirect water in the industrial sector, i.e. supply chain management in the whole life cycle, is important to increase water use efficiency, since more than 56% of total water was indirect water by humanity. It is expected that the water use intensity data can be used for a water inventory to estimate water footprint of a product for the introduction of water footprint scheme in Korea.

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides commonly form as secondary minerals of high reactivity and large surface area resulting from alteration and weathering of primary minerals, and they are efficient sorbents for inorganic and organic contaminants. Accordingly, they have a great potential in industrial applications and are also of substantial interest in environmental sciences. Goethite (${\alpha}$-FeOOH) is one of the most ubiquitous and stable forms of iron (oxyhydr)oxides in terrestrial soils, sediments, and ore deposits, as well as a common weathering product in rocks of all types. This study focused on adsorption reaction as a main mechanism in scavenging arsenic using goethite. Goethite was synthesized in the laboratory to get high purity, and a variety of mineralogical and physicochemical features of goethite were measured and related to adsorption characteristics of arsenic. To compare differences in adsorption reactions between arsenic species, in addition, a variety of experiments to acquire adsorption isotherm, adsorption edges, and adsorption kinetics were accomplished. The point of zero charge (PZC) of the laboratory-synthesized goethite was measured to be 7.6, which value seems to be relatively higher, compared to those of other iron (oxyhydr)oxides. Its specific surface area appeared to be $29.2\;m^2/g$ and it is relatively smaller than those of other (oxyhydr)oxides. As a result, it was speculated that goethite shows a smaller adsorption capacity. It is likely that the affinity of goethite is much more larger for As(III) (arsenite) than for As(V) (arsenate), because As(III) was observed to be much more adsorbed on goethite than As(V) in equivalent pH conditions. When the adsorption of each arsenic species onto goethite was characterized in various of pH, the adsorption of As(III) was largest in neutral pH range (7.0~9.0) and decreased in both acidic and alkaline pH conditions. In the case of As(V), the adsorption appeared to be highest in the lowest pH condition, and then decreased with an increase of pH. This peculiarity of arsenic adsorption onto goethite might be caused by macroscopic electrostatic interactions due to variation in chemical speciation of arsenic and surface charge of goethite, and also it is significantly affected by change in pH. Parabolic diffusion model was adequate to effectively evaluate arsenic adsorption on goethite, and the regression results show that the kinetic constant of As(V) is larger than that of As(III).
