  • A novel diamine monomer, containing fluorine and phosphine oxide, bis(3-aminophenyl) 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl) phenyl phosphine oxide (mDA6FPPO), was prepared via Grignard reaction, and utilized to prepare polyimides with dianhydrides such as PMDA, 6FDA, BTDA or ODPA, by the conventional two-step route; preparation of poly(amic acid), followed by solution imidization. The polyimides were characterized by FT-lR, NMR, DSC and DMA, with intrinsic viscosity, and adhesive properties were also evaluated. A phosphine oxide containing monomer, bis(3-aminophenyl) phenyl phosphine oxide (mDAPPO) a nd a commercial 3,3'-diamino diphenyl sulfone (mDDS) were also used for comparison. The polyimides with mDA6FPPO exhibited high $T_g$, excellent solubility, and good adhesive properties.

  • The objective of this study was the development of a discrimination model for the cultivational origin of paper mulberry bast fiber and Hanji using near infrared (NIR) and mid infrared (MIR) spectroscopy combined with partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Paper mulberry bast fiber was purchased in 10 different regions of Korea, and used to make Hanji. PLS-DA was performed using pre-treated FT-NIR and FT-MIR spectral data for paper mulberry bast fiber and Hanji. PLS-DA of paper mulberry bast fiber and Hanji samples, using FT-NIR spectral data, showed 100 % performance in cross validation and the confusion matrix (accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity). The discrimination models showed four regional groups which demonstrated clearer separation and much superior score plots in the NIR spectral data-based model than in the MIR spectral data-based model. Furthermore, the discrimination model based on the NIR spectral data of paper mulberry bast fiber had highly similar score morphology to that of the discrimination model based on the NIR spectral data of Hanji.

  • The aim of our study is to develop new algorism for sea fog detection by using Geostational Meteorological Satellite-5(GMS-5) and suggest the techniques of its continuous detection. So as to detect daytime sea fog/stratus(00UTC, May 10, 1999), visible accumulated histogram method and surface albedo method are used. The characteristic value during daytime showed A(min) > 20% and DA < 10% when visble accumulated histogram method was applied. And the sea fog region which detected is of similarity in composite image and surface albedo method. In case of nighttime sea fog(18UTC, May 10, 1999), infrared accumulated histogram method and maximum brightness temperature method are used, respectively. Maximum brightness temperature method(T_max method) detected sea fog better than IR accumulated histogram method. In case of T_max method, when infrared value is larger than T_max, fog is detected, where T_max is an unique value, maximum infrared value in each pixel during one month. Then T_max is beneath 700hpa temperature of GDAPS(Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System). Sea fog region which detected by T_max method was similar to the result of National Oceanic and Atmosheric Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA/AVHRR) DCD(Dual Channel Difference). But inland visibility and relative humidity didn't always agreed well.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of lignin fractionated from waste wood (WW) using a two-step process of ethanol organosolv pretreatment followed by ultrafiltration with membranes of different molecular weight cut-offs (1, 5 and 20 kDa). The different permeates obtained were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The analysis by FT-IR and NMR of these lignins showed that the lignin core was successfully separated from WW. TGA curves confirmed that the thermal properties of lignin fractionated by ultrafiltration were almost identical to each other. The results from GPC confirmed that fractionating of lignin was achieved by ultrafiltration. For the membrane fractionation process, values of molecular weight decreased as the cut-offs used to obtain the fractions became smaller. As a result, fractionating lignin by a two-step process allowed separating different fractions of lignin of different molecular weights yielded high purity without interference from existing pollutants in WW. The two-step process offers the possibility of using fractionated WW as an untapped source of lignin.

  • Under a corrosive environment, electrodes that are applied in the water-treatment system need not only very high electrochemical activity for fast reactions, but also high durability for cost saving. Therefore, the fabrication condition of iridium electrodes was examined to produce a more durable iridium electrode in this study. Tantalum was selected as a binder to enhance the durability of the iridium electrode. Investigation of the weight ratio between the catalyst and the binder to improve electrochemical activity was performed. Also, to compare the effect of the different coating amounts of the catalyst, the results of CV (Cyclic Voltammetry) and EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) were discussed. Furthermore, an ALT(Accelerated Lifetime Test) was designed and applied to the electrodes to determine the conditions for highly durable electrode fabrication.

  • The aim of this study was to compare two formulations of film-coated pellets containing c1arithromycin after single oral dose study in healthy male volunteers. Two formulations with different coating polymers were prepared: formulation-1 (F-1) was prepared by incorporating three kinds of pH-dependent gradient-release coated pellets into capsules and formulation-2 (F-2) was prepared by coated with an insoluble semiosmotic film. Release profiles of filmcoated pellets were evaluated using paddle method under different conditions. Pharmacokinetic profiles of these formulations were obtained in three healthy male volunteers and compared to commercially available immediate release (IR) tablets. The relative bioavailability based on the $AUC_{0-24h}$ was found to be $96.2\%\;and\;58.7\%$ for F-1 and F-2 compared with IR, and the $T_{max}$ was delayed.

  • Interpreting ultraviolet-to-infrared (UV-to-IR) observations of galaxies in terms of constraints on physical parameters-such as stellar mass ($M_{\ast}$) and star formation rate (SFR)-requires spectral synthesis modelling. We investigate how increasing the level of sophistication of the standard simplifying assumptions of such models can improve estimates of galaxy physical parameters. To achieve this, we compile a sample of 1048 galaxies at redshifts 0.7 < z < 2.8 with accurate photometry at rest-frame UV to near-IR wavelengths from the 3D-HST Survey. We compare the spectral energy distributions of these galaxies with those from different model spectral libraries to derive estimates of the physical parameters. We find that spectral libraries including sophisticated descriptions of galaxy star formation histories (SFHs) and prescriptions for attenuation by dust and nebular emission provide a much better representation of the observations than 'classical' spectral libraries, in which galaxy SFHs are assumed to be exponentially declining functions of time, associated with a simple prescription for dust attenuation free of nebular emission. As a result, for the galaxies in our sample, $M_{\ast}$ derived using classical spectral libraries tends to be systematically overestimated and SFRs systematically underestimated relative to the values derived adopting a more realistic spectral library. We conclude that the sophisticated approach considered here is required to reliably interpret fundamental diagnostics of galaxy evolution.

  • Two t-amines, N,N-dimethylaniline (MA), N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (MPT), were investigated as new visible light amine initiators for a dental resin composite of UDMA in order to improve photopolymerization effect. Three t-amines mixed with three photosensitizers, camphorquinone(CQ), 1-phenyl-1,2-propane dione(PD) and diacetyl (DA), respectively. And then this mixtures are added to resin monomer, UDMA. Photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA was studied through the use of FT-IR absorption spectroscopy. The photopolymerization effect of amine initiators were compared with that of 4-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (AEM), the most widely used photoinitiator. The photopolymerization efficiency of UDMA containing the amine initiator increased with irradiation time. The relative polymerization efficiency containing the CQ photosensitizer increase was in the order: AEM < MPT < MA. And the relative polymerization efficiency containing the PD photosensitizer increase was in the order: MPT < AEM < MA. This result shows that MA is most efficient amine initiator with CQ and PD.

  • A polysaccharide (LVP) was purified from fruiting body of Lentinus velutinus by ethanol precipitation fractionation and DEAE and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. The yield of purified polysaccharide was 0.025%. Molecular characteristics of LVP were determined by gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR spectroscopy, and thin-layer chromatography. Our results revealed that LVP is a polysaccharide composed of only glucose units, and has a molecular weight of 336 kDa. Biological activity assays indicated that LVP exhibits both cytotoxic and antioxidant activity. LVP showed specific cytotoxicity against cancer cells (HeLa and HepG2 cells), and alterations in cancer cell morphology were found after LVP treatment.

  • SIMP is an international project funded by INTAS aimed at improving the information content, which can be inferred from multi-sensor satellite imagery of marine coastal areas. Scientific teams from Germany, UK, Portugal, and Russia focus on the development of novel tools for marine remote sensing of the coastal zone. In particular, the project teams' benefit from the fact that surface films may enhance the signatures of hydrodynamic processes such as plumes, internal waves, eddies, etc., on microwave, optical, and infrared imagery. The project's objectives are to develop a robust methodology for identifying slick-related phenomena/processes through their surface signatures and thereby, to improve the discrimination capabilities between slicks and other oceanic and atmospheric phenomena by taking into account information gained from satellite imagery quasi-simultaneously recorded at microwave, visible and IR wavelengths. The results of the two project years are summarized. Examples are given for the project’s web presentation, laboratory and field experiments, and of the analyses of various satellite data.
