  • We have shown that it is possible to form a fibrilar network of fibronectin on a polyelectrolyte polymer film whose dimensions are similar to those reported on the extra cellular matrix. The fibronectin network was observed to form only when the charge density of the polymer was in excess of the natural charge density of the cell wall. Furthermore, the self-organized fibronectin layer was much thicker than the polymer film, indicating that long ranged interaction may playa key role in the assembly process. It is therefore important to understand the structure of the polymer layer/protein interface. Here we report on a neutron reflectivity study where we explore the structure of the polyelectrolyte layer, in this case sulfonated polystyrene (PSSx,), with varying degree of sulfonation (x<30%), as a function of sulfur content and counter ion concentration. These results are then correlated with systemic study of the adsorption and the multilayer formation of fibronectin as a function of incubation time for various sulfonation levels of $PSSx.^1$

  • The use of ion-exchange resins for the treatment of radioactive wastes has many advantages, but thes eare rather expensive as compared with the Korean vermiculite. The Korean vermiculite has slightly different chemical constituents from the ones produced in other countries, and its physical properties might be applicable to the management of radioactive waste, in a small nuclear installation. The decontaminating effect of Korean vermiculite for the low-level radioactive liquid was investigated. $^{106}Ru,\;^{90}Sr,\;and\;^{137}Cs$ were utilized for the experiments. The removal rates by Korean vermiculite were calculated for $^{106}Ru,\;^{90}Sr\;and\;^{137}Cs$ and the removal rates increased as the weight of vermiculite in the exchange column increased. The decontaminating constants, $K_d$ of the Korean vermiculite for $^{106}Ru,\;^{90}Sr\;and\;^{137}Cs$ were 2.7, 69.3 and 263ml/g respectively. Through the results of experiments, the application of Korean vermiculite column to the treatment of low-level radioactive waste is quite feasible.

  • In order to prepare high performance polymeric membrane, the crosslinked chitosan(C. Chitosan)membrane was prepared, the transport and the selective separation of the metal ions through the membrane were investigated. It was observed that the transport rates of the metal ions through the membrane increased according to the decreasing of the initial pH in downstream solution. Proton pump mechanism for this transport phenomenon was suggested. The transport selectivity is dependent on the selective adsorption resulting from the complex formation of chitosan with each metal ion. The separatin factor(${\alpha}_{Cu}{^{2+}}$) for the membrane was 9.5.

  • Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) has recently gained increasing attention for the recovery and production of acids or bases from the corresponding salt solutions and other high value-added business like food processing and biochemical industry. EDBM possesses economical and environmental benefits and can complex with other process such as ion exchange process, extraction and adsorption. So this paper investigates a brief overview of development for bipolar membrane and EDBM with the practical application.

  • An $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitor, CK-4416, was identified from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. CK-4416. CK-4416, which had some specificity against intestinal disaccharidases, especially sucrase and matlase activities, was purified by adsorption and cationic ion exchange chromatographies. The molecular formula was determined to be $C_{37}H_{63}NO_{30}$ (MW 1001.31) by FAB-MS and NMR analyses. In vitro studies found CK-4416 to show a potent inhibitory activity against sucrase and maltase, but it had low inhibition against $\alpha$-amylase.

  • This study deals with the removal of mercury species using a packed-bed column with spherical aminated chitosan material. These adsorbents revealed a high adsorption capacity for mercury species. Experiments with feed solutions of 10 ppm Hg dissolved in distilled water showed an excellent removal with a sharp increase of the filter effluent concentration after a total throughput of 900 bed volumes of feed water. Up to $95\%$ desorption was reached by using 3 bed volumes of 0.01 N EDTA solution. EDTA could be recovered by means of sulfuric acid with about $75\%$ efficiency. Almost the same results were obtained in repeated sorption and desorption experiments at identical conditions. The experiments demonstrated that the sorbents possessed practically no sorption capacity for alkaline earth ions ($Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$). Their influence on the sorption of mercury was negligible. In experiments with spiked tap water of the Karlsruhe Research Centre and a feed mercury concentration of 0.01 mg/l, the breakthrough of Hg was observed only after a total throughput of about 6,000 bed volumes of feed water.

  • Caprolactam is the most important raw material for making Nylon 6 fibers and its quality directly determines the quality of Nylon. So it is necessary to study the techniques and methods to remove the colorful impurities from caprolactam. In this paper, the decolorization of caprolactam aqueous solution by anion exchange resins was studied and the decoloring abilities of five commercial resins were investigated. The regeneration of the resins was also studied, too. This study shows that the resin AMTX202 have excellent decoloring ability in the column experiment and that the decoloring efficiency is correlated with the volume of resins packed and is slightly affected by the flow rate and regenerating times. The fact that the resins can be regenerated and reused without affecting the efficiency of decolorization will decrease the cost of the treatment and operation in the industry. The adsorption of colored compounds with anion exchange resins in the packed columns seems to be technically feasible.

  • Interfacil charge approximations and structures at doped semiconductor interfaces were proposed. Rectifying phenomena at the III-V compound semiconductor (p-GaP, p-InP, n-GaAs)/$CsNO_3$ aqueous electrolyte interfaces were qualitatively analyzed in terms of their cyclic current-voltage characteristics. The current-voltage characteristic curves, the ion adsorption and potential barrier processes at the semiconductor interfaces were verified using continuous cyclic voltammetric methods. The pn or np junction structures and the related rectifying types at the doped semi-condudtor-electrolyte inferfaces are determined by the space charges.

  • The aim of the present study was to produce low molecular weight cathepsin B inhibitor. A strain of Streptomyces aburabiensis isolated from soil in Korea was selected and the optimum condition for the production of the inhibitor was evaluated. Glucose and soytone were selected as best carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. From the kinetic analysis in batch fermentation, it was found that the specific cathepsin B inhibitor production rate (q$_{p}$) was linearly related to specific growh rate ($\mu$). The inhibitor in culture filtrate was purified by adsorption on activated charcoal, butanot extraction, silica gel chromatography, ion exchange chromatography using Dowex-1 (Cl form) and Amberlite IRC-50 (H$^{+}$ form), and preparative TLC. From the UV, IR, Mass spectroscopy and $^{1}$H-NMR, the inhibitor was thought to be a new inhibitor of which molecular weight was 199.

  • In order to predict the onset of the corrosion of steel bars in the concrete, a mathematical model including the diffusion of chloride ion in aqueous phase of pores, the adsorption and desorption of chloride ions to and from the surface of solid phase of concrete, and the chemical reaction of chloride ions with solid phase was established. Finite element method was employed to carry out numerical analysis. The chlorides penetrating through the wall of concrete structure from the external environment and the chlorides contained in the concrete admixture were confirmed to be two important factors to determine the onset of corrosion of steel bars.
