Dose Distribution of $^{11}C$ Beams for Spot Scanning Radiotherapy

  • This paper describes the spot scanning with $^{11}$ C beams for the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). The concave-shaped irradiation field was optimized and the dose distribution was measured by 128-ch ionization chamber. Because of the wide momentum spread inherent in $^{11}$ C beams, the dispersion caused from the beam line and the scanning magnets should be taken into account to calculate the dose distribution of $^{11}$ C beams and their irradiated field. The reconstructed dose distribution is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Vertical Alignment of Nematic Liquid Crystal on the SiC Thin Film Layer with Ion-beam Irradiation

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of the SiC (Silicon Carbide) thin film. The SiC thin film exhibits good chemical and thermal stability. The good thermal and chemical stability make SiC an attractive candidate for electronic applications. A vertical alignment of nematic liquid crystal by atomic beam exposure on the SiC thin film surface was achieved. The about $87^{\circ}$ of stable pretilt angle was achieved at the range from $30^{\circ}\;to\;45^{\circ}$ of incident angle. Consequently, the vertical alignment effect of liquid crystal electro-optical characteristic by the atomic beam alignment method on the SiC thin film layer can be achieved.

  • Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$\sub$x/(Bi(2201)) thin films are fabricated by atomic layer by layer deposition using ion beam sputtering(IBS) method. During the deposition, 10 %-ozone/oxygen mixture gas of typical 5.0 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-5/. Torr is applied with ultraviolet light irradiation for oxidation. XRD and RHEED investigations reveal out that a buffer layer with some different compositions is formed at the early deposition stage of less than 10 units cell and then c-axis oriented Bi(2201) is grown.

  • Blue phosphor of Ba-Mg-Al-O:Eu$^{2+}$ phase was fabricated by conventional firing techniques under reducing atmosphere and its photoluminescence properties are studied with varying Eu concentration and phost-annealing temperature under air atmosphere. This phosphors were well crystallized with particle size in the range of 3~5um and emitted a blue light at a dominent wavelength 450nm for 254nm UV irradiation. The concentration quenching wit Eu$^{2+}$ was that with increasing Eu concentration the energy transfer between the activator ions steadily improves, so that the excitation energy is transported over larger distances through the lattice before luminescence can occur. Thermal quenching also occurred in this phosphor means that in a host lattice with the $\beta$-alumina structure the bond of an Eu$^{2+}$ ion with the nearest-neighbour oxygen ion is much stronger than in a lattice with the magnetoplumbite structure.cture.

Economic Scale of Radiation Application in Japan

  • The economic scale of nuclear application is a good indicator to show how the radiation technology is useful and contribute to improve public welfare and living standard. Recent research in Japan shows that the economic scale of nuclear field was 4,112 B¥ for radiation application(46%) and 4,741 B¥ for nuclear energy (54%) playing a role of "two wheels of one cart" in nuclear field and the total 8,853 B¥ constitutes 1.8% of gross domestic products (GDP). The radiation application consisted of 2,295 B¥ (56%) in industry (semiconductor, sterilization, nondestructive testing, radiation processing of tires, etc.), 1,538 B¥ (37%) in medicine (therapy and diagnosis such as X-ray, nuclear medicine, computed tomography, etc.) and 279 B¥ (7%) in agriculture (mutation breeding, food irradiation, sterile insect technique, etc.). Radiation application by ${\gamma}$-ray, electron beam and ion beam is steadily increasing in Japan.

Photochemical Reaction of Dichloromethane in Aqueous Solution

  • The photochemical reaction of aqueous dichloromethane in the absence (saturated with argon) and the presence of O2 (saturated with air or oxygen) has been investigated using 184.9 nm UV light. The irradiation of the solution causes the formation of 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and chloride ion. The initial quantum yield of the products in the absence of oxygen was determined to be 8.6 × 10-3, 7.3 × 10-3, 4.4 × 10-3 and 2.3 × 10-2, respectively. In addition to these main products, small amounts of 1,2,3-trichloropropane, 1,1,2,2,3-pentachloropropane, 1,1,2,3,3-pentachloropropane, 1,3-dichloropropane and 1,1,2,2,3,3-hexachloropropane were detected. In the presence of oxygen, hydrogen peroxide was also detected along with the products listed above. With increasing the concentration of oxygen, while formation of the chlorinated organic products diminished, formation of chloride ion increased. Probable reaction mechanisms for the photochemical reaction were presented on the basis of products analysis.

Detection of Al3+ by fluorescent turn-on nitrogen/sulphur-binary doped carbon dots

  • In this study, a straightforward and precise nitrogen/sulphur-codoped carbon dots (N/S-CD) was produced using a microwave irradiation approach. The N/S-CD was formulated from succinic acid (SA), bis-(3-aminopropyl)-amine (BAPA), and sodium thiosulphate (STS) as sources of carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur, respectively. The synthesized N/S-CD established a valuable quantum yield (QY) of 70 % and was sensitive to aluminium ion (Al3+) with a detection limit of 0.21 µM and a linear concentration range of 0-100 µM. When detecting Al3+ in real water samples, the N/S-CD resulted in a satisfactory recovery in the range of 91.14 %-103.37 %. Thus, the proposed study is very promising for Al3+ detection in environmental water samples.
