An Empirical Study on the Effect of Protection of Property Right on Foreign Direct Investment - Focused on US. Multinational Corporations - (지적재산권 보호가 해외직접투자 유입에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증연구 - 미국 다국적기업을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated the effect of protection of property right on foreign direct investment. With the US. multinational corporations over the periods from 2000 to 2008, this study used the FEM and system GMM, and found that the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment while protection of property right level itself does not. In the analyses on high income and low income countries(by income level), only the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment in low income countries. In considering the problem of heteroscedasticity on the error term, this study used FGLS and PCSE estimation methods. It is reported that the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment while protection of property right level itself does not. And only the change of protection of property right level positively affects attracting foreign direct investment in low income countries. This result means the change of protection of property right level is a key determinant to attract foreign direct investment.

  • This paper aims at analyzing the characteristics of performance and asset management system of listed property trusts(LPT) in Australia, and elucidating the implications for Korean real estate indirect investment market. The main results of this paper are as follows. Firstly, LPT have a leading position among the real estate indirect investment systems in Australia, through the rapid growth of market capitalization. Secondly, LPT achieved superior risk adjustment performance than other financial products, and had valid portfolio diversification effect. Thirdly, many LPT have used stapled securities structure as a asset management system, and stapled LPT revealed superior risk adjustment performance than unit LPT. Finally, implications and policy measures such as using the stapled structure and activating the development activities were examined for the development of Korean real estate indirect investment market.

Protection of Intellectual Property Rights and Subsidy Policy for Foreign Direct Investment

  • This paper provides a theoretical setup for an analysis of strategic relationships inherent to activities of an innovative multinational enterprise (MNE) and a local company in a host country. Additionally, we explore the incentives of the host country's government to provide subsidies to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and to protect outcomes of R&D activities conducted by the MNE. We show that the MNE's commercial interests may collide with local companies' over protection of IPRs. Therefore, the extent of knowledge spillovers from the MNE to the local company and the magnitude of incentives to the MNE perform a crucial function in determining the optimal policy mix of IPR protection and FDI subsidies of the host country's government.

  • Purpose: In the period of international integration, how is the implementation of intellectual property regulation in developing countries? Do intellectual property rights help attract more Foreign direct investment (FDI)? This study aims to show the effect of intellectual property rights, reflect in the number of patent registered (Patent distribution into two components: Patent_residents and Patent_non-residents) on FDI attraction in Vietnam. Research design, data and methodology: Using Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model for the data collected from 1990 to 2018 with EViews version 9 software. Conclusions: The results indicate that the number of patent protection has a positive effect on FDI in both short term and long term. In particular, only patent registration of foreign individuals and organizations has a significant positive effect on attracting FDI, while that of Vietnamese patents is not statistically significant. From the results of this study, we provide some recommendations to help attract FDI based on raising awareness of intellectual property rights: Increase international cooperation for innovation to learn and encourage patent; Improve the capac ity of inventing as well as the ability to register patents of Vietnamese people; Government agencies are tasked to support a nd review registration procedures; Encouraging patent registration based on the patent.

  • Striking in change that present our country is much by electricity industry reform and the Korea Electric Power Corporation is deciding power distribution system reliability indices every year but power distribution system for reliability evaluation and establishment of investment program are consisting punily. If consider efficient inflection of resources and hereafter power distribution division that is limited for target achievement of schedule level service evaluation and reliability side in operation of the power distribution system, can expect efficient practical use of the power distribution property if gains in electrical side about these change and most suitable investment way consist because there is necessity of electric power plan establishment of area electric power distribution place of business unit. This paper consider proper reliability level and maximum effect through quantitative analysis to gain electrical gains of the power distribution system in reliability side depending on trend DB(Data Base) of data of electric power system composition appliance in this treatise and apply data administration and reliability rate analysis that serve to decide most suitable investment precedence to supply of electric power property to power distribution system present investment algorithm.

  • The aim of this article is to investigate the relationship between insurance and economic growth at aggregate and disaggregate level for the period 1982-2018. Very few studies have been carried out in this field, with contradictory results and using an aggregate data while, according to different authors, an aggregate data might provide spurious results. The author used Ordinary Least Squares Regressions (OLS) and Granger Causality tests to explore the strength and direction of the relationship between insurance and economic growth at an aggregate level. To check the relationship at disaggregate level life insurance, marine insurance, and property insurance are regressed on trade openness and investment, respectively. Non-life insurance at an aggregate level plays a positive and significant role in promoting economic growth, but life insurance has an insignificant impact on the Pakistan economy. On the other hand, non-life insurances at a disaggregated level such as marine insurance negatively affect a vital part of economic growth, i.e., trade. At the same time, property insurance has a significant and positive role in boosting investment. Life, marine, and property insurance Granger cause economic growth, trade, and investment in a single direction. Nevertheless, is a bi-directional relationship between economic growth and non-life insurance.

A Study of the Effect of Intangible Asset on Firm Value : Focused on KOSDAQ-Listed Medium-Sized Companies (기업의 무형자산이 기업가치에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 : 코스닥 상장 중견기업을 중심으로)

  • According to the growing importance of science and technology policy, investment in research and development (R&D) has been increased. In this context, a patent as one of outcome of firm's systematic R&D investment is the way to hold a dominant position in companies' technology competitiveness and also to protect technology right. This study attempts to find the effects of input resources and intellectual property production activity on company value. It conducted empirical analysis based on 238 KOSDAQ-listed and medium-sized firms. Using the previous research, this study configurated research variables about activity of patent production, company value, and input of resources. Through these variables, it aims to know the effect of input of resources and activity of patent production on company value. First, the result of regression analysis shows that R&D cost has the positive effect on a patent production and sales promotion cost positively affects on the registration of the trademark. Second, the output of regression analysis indicates that a patent has the positive effect on company value but a trademark has not. With regard to the input of resources, R&D cost has the influence on company value but sales promotion cost has not. This study attempts to find the effectiveness of company's intellectual property registration on its value and suggests a way that the systematic R&D investment contributes the growth of company value.

Regional Financial Development, Firm Heterogeneity and Investment Efficiency

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between regional financial development and corporate investment efficiency as well as the relationship between firm-level characteristics and corporate investment efficiency. Using a large sample of A-listed companies in China from CSMAR database between 2003 and 2016, this paper explores corporate investment efficiency and its influencing factors in emerging market on the basis of heterogeneous stochastic frontier model. The results show that: (1) the average investment efficiency of Chinese listed companies is 74.5%, and the investment efficiency of large enterprises, state-owned enterprises and enterprises with relatively high financial development level is significantly higher; (2) compared with average corporate investment efficiency in the year 2003, the investment efficiency of different types of enterprises in 2016 is significantly higher, and the gap is gradually widening; (3) enterprise heterogeneity namely firm size, nature of property right, and institutional environment reflected by the level of regional financial development indirectly affects corporate investment efficiency by influencing the financing constraints and uncertainty. The findings suggest that to improve corporate investment efficiency in emerging market, financial market should be accelerated, regional balance should be restored and the differences among regions, industries and differences between public and private sectors should be eliminated.

  • Information on the future availability of invested funds provides a decision maker with additional insight into the characteristics of alternatives in sequential investment analysis. The flexibilty to pursue newly emergent investment opportunities is an important property of decision alternatives that describes the future mobility of invested funds. The primary purpose of this paper is to propose a method for measuring flexibility using the concept of negative project balance with project abandonment option.

Does investment inefficiency increase the proportion of investment property? (기업의 투자 비효율성은 투자부동산의 비중을 높이는가?)

  • 본 연구는 기업의 투자효율성이 투자부동산 비중에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 경영자의 사적이익 추구현상과 대리인비용이 클수록 나타나는 과잉투자성향이 기업의 투자부동산 비중을 증가시키는지 분석하였다. 이를 위해 2007년부터 2018년까지 유가증권시장과 코스닥시장의 5,781개의 기업-연도를 대상으로 분석하였으며 투자효율성은 McNichols and Stubben(2008)의 연구방법론으로 측정하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 투자 비효율성이 커질수록 기업의 투자부동산 비중이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 투자 비효율성이 높을수록 나타나는 대리인비용과 경영자의 제국건설성향이 투자부동산 비중과 유의한 관련성을 갖는다는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 유가증권시장과 코스닥시장으로 구분하여 분석한 결과에서는 코스닥시장에서 유의성을 확인할 수 없었다. 즉, 투자 비효율성이 커질수록 나타나는 투자부동산의 비중은 유가증권시장에서 관찰되었다. 셋째, 투자 비효율성을 과잉투자와 과소투자로 구분하여 분석한 결과에서는 과잉투자성향이 증가할수록 투자부동산의 비중이 증가하였으나 과소투자와는 관련성이 나타나지 않았다. 이상의 연구결과는 그 간의 선행연구에서 주로 투자부동산과 기업 가치의 관련성에 초점을 맞추었던 반면, 대리인비용과 투자부동산 비중 간의 실증적 증거가 부족한 가운데 추가적인 학문적, 실무적 시사점을 갖는다.
