  • In this paper, three kinds of the inverter topologies for the variable speed drive of 2-phase induction motor are compared and analyzed. The 2-phase inverters are classified into 2-leg, 3-leg, and 4-leg types depending on the number of power switching devices. And they use the output voltage vectors of the different forms according to the inverter topologies. Based on the comparative analyzed results, the effective values of output voltage have been defined by the linear modulation range. Therefore, the motor design guideline is proposed in order to decide a rated voltage of 2-phase induction motor according to the inverter topologies. Also, the computer simulations are carried out to verify the output voltage and current characteristics of each inverter topology.

  • In this paper, the analysis on type effect of inverter output voltage distortion on the control of an induction motor is discussed. The inverter output voltage is distorted differently from the reference voltage owing to the inverter nonlinear characteristic. The inverter nonlinear characteristic results from the voltage drop, the inherent characteristic of the power semiconductor, and the dead time for preventing the short circuit of the inverter leg. This characteristic distorts the inverter output voltage and then, causes the motor flux estimation error. Although this characteristics do not significantly effect in the general-purpose induction motor control, but significantly effect on the low-speed operation of high performance motor control such as the sensorless vector control.

  • The paper presents a new photovoltaic inverter for stand-alone induction motor application. The proposed system is composed of two stages. First stage is for the photovoltaic dc power feeding and second stage is dedicated to the motor-inverter subsystem and control technique. A direct torque control (DTC) with a novel switching strategy for motor torque ripple minimization is introduced. The novel DTC strategy is based on selecting a suitable voltage vector group for motor torque ripple minimization. A three-level voltage source inverter (VSI) is used instead of a two level inverter because the first has more available vectors and lower ripples in the output current and flux than the second, thus it has lower torque ripples. The photovoltaic array and battery bank are sized and the configuration is indicated based on sun-hour methodology. Simulation results show a comparison between three systems; two level VSI with conventional DTC strategy, three level VSI with conventional DTC, and the proposed system that has a novel DTC switching strategy applied to three level VSI. The results show that the proposed system has lower ripples in the current, flux and torque of the motor.

  • In this paper, filtering techniques to reduce the adverse effects of motor leads on high-frequency PWM inverter fed AC motor drives will be examined. The filter was designed to keep the motor terminal from the cable surge impedance to reduce overvoltage reflections, ringing, and the dv/dt, di/dt. Therefore, filtering techniques are investigated to reduce the motor terminal overvoltage, ringing, and EMI noise in inverter fed ac motor drive systems. The output filter is used to limit the rate of the inverter output voltage and reduce EMI(common mode noise) to the motor. The performance of the output filter is evaluated through simulations (PSIM) and experiment on PWM inverter-fed ac motor drive(3phase, 3hp(2.2kw), input voltage 220/380V, induction motor). An experimental PWM drive system reduction of conducted EMI was implemented on an available TMS320C31 microprocessor control board. Finally, experimental results showed that the inverter output filter reduces more CM noise than the LPF(low pass filter) and reduce overvoltage and ringing at the motor terminal.

  • In this paper, analysis of cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter in DTC-SVM (Direct Torque Control-Space Vector Modulation) based induction motor drive for FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) is presented. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter uses multiple series units of H-bridge power cells to achieve medium-voltage operation and low harmonic distortion. In FCEV, a fuel cell stack is used as the major source of electric power moreover the battery and/or ultra-capacitor is used to assist the fuel cell. These sources are suitable for utilizing in cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. The drive control strategy is based on DTC-SVM technique. In this scheme, first, stator voltage vector is calculated and then realized by SVM method. Contribution of multilevel inverter to the DTC-SVM scheme is led to achieve high performance motor drive. Simulations are carried out in Matlab-Simulink. Five-level and nine-level inverters are applied in 3hp FCEV induction motor drive for analysis the multilevel inverter. Each H-bridge is implemented using one fuel cell and battery. Good dynamic control and low ripple in the torque and the flux as well as distortion decrease in voltage and current profiles, demonstrate the great performance of multilevel inverter in DTC-SVM induction motor drive for vehicle application.

  • Voltage varing Fate dv/dt which is applied to induction motor usually makes unnegligible leakage current and it flows through stator winding and motor frame. This kind of harmonic leakage current makes effect on power source and cuases electromagnetic trouble because the motor frame has earth. Therefore in this study, a high frequency induction motor model is developed and analyze the motor performance to explain the phenomena. Inverter model is also developed and is combined with the motel model to prepare the basis of the high frequency effects on inverter fed induction motor.

  • This paper presents an active auxiliary edge-resonant DC link snubber with a ringing surge damper and a three-phase voltage source type zero voltage soft-switching inverter with the resonat snubber treated here for the AC servo motor driver applications. The operation of the active auxiliary edge-resonant DC link snubber circuit with PWM voltage is described, together with the practical design method to select its circuit parameters. The three-phase voltage source type soft-switching inverter with a single edge-resonant DC link snubber treated here is evaluated and discussed for the small-scale permanent magnet (PM) type-AC servo motor driver from an experimental point of view. In addition to these, the AC motor stator current and its motor speed response for the proposed three-phase soft-switching inverter employing Intelligent Power Module(IPM) based on IGBTS are compared with those of the conventional three-phase hard-switching inverter using IPM. The practical effectiveness of the three-phase soft-switching inverter-fed permanent magnet type AC motor speed tracking servo driver is proven on the basis of the common mode current in a novel type three-phase soft-switching inverter-fed AC motor side and the conductive noise on the mains terminal interface voltage as compared with those of the conventional three-phase hard-switching inverter-fed permanent magnet type AC servo motor driver for the speed tracking applications.

  • This paper presents numerical analysis by omputer for the steady state characteristics of the single phase reluctance motor driven by the bridge type SCR inverter and also the experiments were carried out to verify the numerical analysis data for the current, voltage, and torque of the motor. It shows that the inductance of the inverter, the capacity of the commutation condenser and the frequency of the inverter have great effects to the magnitude and wave form of the motor terminal voltage and current. It is clear that the capacity of the commutation condenser and the inductance of the inverter circuit have to be adequately selected in order to stabilize the motor operation.

  • The PWM inverter drive may cause an over voltage at the motor terminal, which imposes severe electric stresses on the inter-turn insulation of motor windings. Unlike low-voltage induction motors, high-voltage induction motors have a stator type of form-wound coil for insulation and are insulated to the slot and the coil. So, this paper presents a PWM 3-level inverter, H-Bridge cascaded 7-level inverter and High-voltage induction motor model. It then analyzes the voltage that generates at the input terminal of the high-voltage induction motor fed by each inverter. Also, in order to examine a factor that influences the switching surge voltage, this paper proposes the system equivalent model and performs the case studies using EMTP.
