  • In this paper, a model is presented which incoporates the possibility of quality control at each of the production stages. We consider the TYPE I error and the TYPE II error in inspection procedures. In addition to alternative quality control configurations, the model integrates the carrying costs of in-process and finished inventory, quality of production process, reprocessing including fixed and variable cost. Our policy determines the value of optimal lot-size and reprocessing batch size in reducing the total costs. A numerical example illustrates the model framework and highlights the role of the decision variables.

  • In the traditional inventory problem, market parameters such as demand and selling price are exogenous. But incorporating these factors into the model can provide an opportunity for increasing the total profit. So we investigate the joint price-inventory policy in a supply chain consisting of a single retailer and a single manufacturer. Demand at the retailer depends on the retail price. The retailer and the manufacturer cooperate closely each other to maximize overall profit of the supply chain. The mathematical model is presented and the solution procedure is developed in order to jointly determine the optimal policy including the retail price, the production lot sizes, and the delivery frequency from the manufacturer to the retailer.

  • Joint optimization of preventive age replacement and inventory policy is considered in this paper. There are three decision variables in the problem: (i) preventive replacement age of the operating unit, (ii) order quantity per order and (iii) reorder point for spare replenishment. Preventive replacement age and order quantity are jointly determined so as to minimize the expected cost rate, and then the reorder point for meeting a desired service level is found. A numerical example is included to explain the joint optimization model.

  • This paper makes an attempt to compare the two important methods for finding solutions of multi-item inventory problem with more than one conflicting objectives. Panda et al.[9] discusses a distance-based method to find the best possible compromise solution with variation of priority under the given weight structure. In this paper, the problem in [9] is revisited through the Pareto-optimal front of genetic algorithm with the help of a situation of retail stocking of FMCG business. The advantages of using the solutions from the perspective of the decision maker obtained through multi-objective optimization are highlighted in terms of population search, weighted goals and priority structure, cost, set of compromise solutions along with prevention of stock-out situation.

  • We present a new framework for rental capacity management in which rental capacity is dynamically managed by means of temporary inventory addition/return. While serving customers with its own (native) capacity, the rental firm rents additional rental capacity from an upper echelon rental company so that it can avoid lost sales which may occur when stock is not sufficient, and returns it when stock becomes sufficiently large enough to cope with demands. Formulating the model as a Markov decision process, we investigate a flexible capacity addition/return policy that maximizes the firm's profit with respect to system costs. Numerical study indicates that rental operation with capacity addition/return can be economically favorable over rental operation without capacity expansion/return and can contribute the reduction in the size of native rental capacity.

  • A general methodology is suggested to solve shelf-space allocation problem of retailers. A multi-item inventory model of breakable items is developed, where items are either complementary or substitute. Demands of the items depend on the amount of stock on the showroom and unit price of the respective items. Also demand of one item decreases (increases) due to the presence of others in case of substitute (complementary) product. For such a model, a Contractive Mapping Genetic Algorithm (CMGA) has been developed and implemented to find the values of different decision variables. These are evaluated to have maximum possible profit out of the proposed system. The system has been illustrated numerically and results for some particular cases are derived. The results are compared with some other heuristic approaches- Simulated Annealing (SA), simple Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Greedy Search Approach (GSA) developed for the present model.

  • We consider a product recovery system that a single product is stocked in order to meet a demand from customers who may return products after usage. This paper addresses a problem of when to release a procurement process to replenish serviceable inventory and how many new products to procure. The structure of the optimal procurement policy is examined and numerically identified as a monotonic threshold curve. A numerical procedure is presented to jointly find the optimal procurement order size, optimal procurement policy, and optimal discounted profit. Sensitivity analysis also indicates that these optimal performance measurements have monotonic properties with respect to system parameters.

  • This study presents a two-level inventory distribution system with one-upper level facility(warehouse) in first echelon and n-lower level facilities(stores) in the second echelon. The demand process at the upper level is induced by the aggregated backorder processes of n independently operated lower level facilities in parallel. For the upper level and the lower level we find the decision points and the distribution function of the aggregate backorders from n-stores. Optimal allocation units and expected system profits are obtained. If the product is of great enough importance to the customer, echelon structure will include a shadow installation. Also, this case is analyzed. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results for each case.

  • In this paper, we propose a mixed integer optimization approach for solving the inventory problem with variable lead time, reorder point, crashing cost and price -quantity discount. Chang and Chang[15] study a continuous review inventory model in which lead time is a decision variable under price-quantity discount. However, their study cannot find the optimal solution due to the flaws in the modeling and the solution procedure. We present a complete procedure to find the optimal solution for the model. In addition to the above contribution, we also apply the minimax distribution free approach to the model to devise a practical procedure which can be used without specific information on demand distribution.

  • The study analyzes those relations of customer service level of each sales branch, level of cooperations among branches, and overall system-wide service level for an item. Under the continuous review method, each sales branch places an order to the outside supplier, and the each branch receives the order quantity after elapsing a certain lead time. Under these circumstances, those branches with stockout condition may be supplied by other branches with keeping stocks to cover the shortages. This policy generally increases the system-wide customer service level for an item throughout cooperations for the safety plan among branches. Therefore, in the context of inventory policy, the decision rules to determine the proper branch levels of service and cooperation levels of service are important goals in terms of attaining desired system-wide service level. This research has suggested the method and procedure to reach above goals.
