Uncertainties inherent in customer demand patterns make it difficult for supply chains to achieve just-in-time inventory replenishment, resulting in loosing sales opportunity or keeping excessive chain wide inventories. In this paper, we propose two intelligent adaptive inventory control models for a supply chain consisting of one supplier and multiple retailers, with the assumption of information sharing. The inventory control parameters of the supplier and retailers are order placement time to an outside source and reorder points in terms of inventory position, respectively. Unlike most extant inventory control approaches, modeling the uncertainty of customer demand as a stationary statistical distribution is not necessary in these models. Instead, using a reinforcement learning technique, the control parameters are designed to adaptively change as customer demand patterns change. A simulation based experiment was performed to compare the performance of the inventory control models.
In this paper, effects of information sharing in multi-level supply chain management have been studied through simulation. The simulation model consists of a manufacturing company as a center, three suppliers, two logistic centers, and three different retail supply lines of each logistics centers. The mathematical model and the simulation were developed when real-time information sharing occurs and does not occur in supply chain under the assumption that each company applies (s, S) inventory policies. In addition, this paper analyzed the effects of the change of variables related to total costs, which compose of total ordering cost, total transportation cost, total carrying cost and shortage cost that are caused by the change of demand of three different patterns with the way of information sharing.
In this paper, the impact of various system parameters such as the parameters of actual demand process, the review periods and the lead times, under each combination of inventory policies and information sharing, on the long run average inventory cost per period incurred at each participant in a supply chain, is considered. For this purpose, numerical studies are conducted, from which some valuable information as to how sensitive our long run average inventory cost per period are as the model parameters change is gleaned, from which, in turn, some managerial insights are gleaned in order for industry practitioners to perform better in supply chain management.
Forming central warehouses for a number of stores can save costs in the continuous review inventory model due to economy of scale and information sharing. In this paper, transportation costs are included in this inventory model. Hence, the tradeoff between inventory-related costs and transportation costs is required. The main concern of this paper is to determine the number and location of central warehouses. Transportation costs are dependent on the distance from several central warehouses to each store. Hence, we develop an efficient simulated annealing algorithm using distance-based local search heuristic and merging heuristic to determine the location and the number of central warehouses. The objective of this paper is to minimize total costs such as holding, setup, penalty, and transportation costs. The performance of the proposed approach is tested by using some computational experiments.
This paper deals with the collaborative procurement process in a two-echelon supply chain that a manufacturing company and a contractor are connected through the information system. The real time information about inventory and production processing becomes available through this information system. We raise two issues related to the collaborative procurement process. First, we propose a VMI(Vendor-Managed Inventory) type of the procurement policy which focuses on the cost minimization for the total supply chain rather than individual companies. Second, based on the simulation study, we demonstrate that a collaborative procurement process is more cost-effective over classical procurement processes such as (Q, r). The result obtained in this paper can be applied to the quantitative evaluation of the cost saving effect when companies build the information sharing based, collaborative procurement system.
Especially, MTO(Make-To-Order) companies take collaborative approaches with their partner companies to make low-price products and/or technologically low intensive products. The collaborative approach to manufacturing requires collaboration with partner companies for inventory review, production plan, and manufacturing to fulfill customer's orders. However, frequent changes of partnerships binder partner companies from sharing production information in effective ways since their information systems have different data architectures and platforms. Therefore, it is required flexible and standardized system integration approach fir effective information sharing. This research studies current status and problems of collaborative production system, proposes an architecture for collaborative production systems based on Web Services which is a standard information technology, and discusses expected effects and the vision of Web Services.
A centralized inventory system provides a number of stores with cost reduction, information sharing. In this paper, transportation costs are included in the inventory model. To build centralized warehouses, two things should be considered: how many warehouses are required and where these are located. The objective of this paper is to develop efficient heuristics to determine the location and the number of central warehouses by minimizing total costs. Throughout some computational experiments, the results of the heuristics are compared with an optimal solution.
This study aims at establishing JIT production management system to enable manage the resources input into from procurement through construction based on correct identification of the process, an analysis on the amount of input materials and information sharing. This study has focused on the process control and working process of rebar work in domestic apartment house construction where the overall scope of Process from the planning phase to the construction phase has been analyzed in this study. Also construction phase was selected for the application of a sample case. A basic model for JIT production was generated with these processes. Furthermore A questionnaire and the on-site survey with process, checklist and control data were prepared and performed for the application of JIT production management model into rebar work. The governing scopes of JIT production management system include process management, material management, yard loading and moving management and inventory control, and the operation of each control item
Purpose - This study examines how consignment and Vendor-Managed Inventory perform as supply chain collaboration programs. By using three key collaborative features, this study defines the collaboration programs and develops theoretical models of different supply chain systems. Research design, data and methodology - This study conducts sophisticated analysis on the supply chain systems by applying simulation modeling based on time-phased operations. The simulation model represents a two-stage supply chain system where a supplier sells a single item to a buyer, and it incorporates various operations. Results - In general, the simulation outcomes support that more advanced collaboration programs outperform less advanced ones. The analysis on the simulation outcomes identifies the significant value of information sharing in both collaboration programs. The specific conditions where the particular collaboration system outperforms the others are recognized. Conclusions - The outcome of this study supports that the supply chain system can improve its performance by having more collaborative features. This study provides business practitioners with guidelines to identify the circumstances that the specific collaboration program can fully exploit its advantages.
