Optimal Use of Stress Waves in Non-Intrusive Seismic Techniques for Geotechnical Applications

  • Stress waves have been used for geophysical and geotechnical applications for more than 50 years. The early-stage applications were simply based on travel-time measurements of stress waves and limited to site characterization. Currently stress-wave techniques are expanded to monitoring processes for grouting of damaged geotechnical structures, compaction of embankment, and deformational analyses for static geotechnical problems. Seismic techniques used to be good enough for rough estimators of engineering properties. Nowadays, the sophisticated modeling theory of stress-wave propagation substantially improved reliability and accuracy of the seismic techniques. In this paper, difficulties involved in currently available seismic techniques are discussed and analyzed. Herein some recently-developed non-intrusive seismic techniques, which make optimal use of stress waves for further improvement of reliability and accuracy, are also presented.

A Study on Measurement of Heartrate and Respiration during Sleep using Doppler Radar: Preliminary Study (도플러 레이더를 이용한 수면 중의 심박 및 호흡 측정: 예비연구)

  • A Doppler radar sensor was applied to detect respirations and heartbeats of persons who were lying on a bed. This study is preliminary study aiming at non-contact and non-intrusive respiration and heart rate monitoring during sleep in daily life. For the experiments, 10GHz Doppler radar with patch-type antenna was used and installed on the upper right and the distance between the body and the antenna was 1 m. The results show that each signal of respiration and heartbeat is observed in each frequency band however the frequency band and the waveform vary according to the subjects and the posture. The results show that the heartbeats can be detected with the peak detection in some frequency band. This study shows the feasibility of applying the Doppler radar to detection of heartbeat and respiration during sleep and further studies about heartbeat detection algorithm are required.

Compensation for Fast Mead Movements on Non-intrusive Eye Gaze Tracking System Using Kalman Filter (Kalman 필터를 이용한 비접촉식 응시점 추정 시스템에서의 빠른 머리 이동의 보정)

  • We propose an eye gaze tracking system under natural head movements. The system consists of one CCD camera and two front-surface mirrors. The mirrors rotate to follow head movements in order to keep the eye within the view of the camera. However, the mirror controller cannot guarantee the fast head movements, because the frame rate is generally 30Hz. To overcome this problem, we applied Kalman predictor to estimate next eye position from the current eye image. In the results, our system allows the subjects head to move 50cm horizontally and 40cm vertically, with the speed about 10cm/sec and 6cm/sec, respectively. And spatial gaze resolutions are about 4.5 degree and 4.5 degree, respectively, and the gaze estimation accuracy is 92% under natural head movements.

  • Illness intrusiveness(illness induced lifestyle disruption) was investigated in 902 patients with arthritis and compared between rheumatoid arthritis(N=439) and osteoarthritis(N=463) patients. Arthritis patients were reported to perceive illness intrusiveness similar to patients with ESRD(end stage renal disease), bipolar disorder and peritoneal dialysis. Especially they were intrusive into health, work, and active recreation domains. And patients with rheumatoid arthritis were significantly more intrusive into activities, especially in diet, financial situation, family relations, other social relations, self-expression/self improvement, religious expression, and community and civic involvement. Differences in treatment regimens and age were hypothesized to account for these differences in illness intrusiveness.

  • Check valves used in industrial and Nuclear Power Plant safety systems are susceptible to failure modes generally associated with wear of internal parts. Specifically, hinge pins, disc studs, pistons, and other mechanical parts may degrade over time, and in some cases, may which might produce a disabling event leading to plant or process shutdown. The primary diagnostic technique in the past has been to disassemble the valves. This procedure is costly, time consuming, and in the nuclear industry, it can lead to radiation exposure in some situations. Additionally repair and reassembly of a valve does not ensure proper operation. Non-intrusive diagnostic technologies including acoustics and magnetics with a digital signal analysis allow to evaluate check valve performance without a disassembly and is able to help the user detect degraded valve conditions.

Load Profile Disaggregation Method for Home Appliances Using Active Power Consumption

  • Power metering and monitoring system is a basic element of Smart Grid technology. This paper proposes a new Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) method for a residential buildings sector using the measured total active power consumption. Home electrical appliances are classified by ON/OFF state models, Multi-state models, and Composite models according to their operational characteristics observed by experiments. In order to disaggregate the operation and the power consumption of each model, an algorithm which includes a switching function, a truth table matrix, and a matching process is presented. Typical profiles of each appliances and disaggregation results are shown and classified. To improve the accuracy, a Time Lagging (TL) algorithm and a Permanent-On model (PO) algorithm are additionally proposed. The method is validated as comparing the simulation results to the experimental ones with high accuracy.

Mesozoic Igneous Rocks in the Bupyeong District (부평지역(富平地域)의 중생대(中生代) 화성암류(火成岩類))

  • In the Bupyeong district, Mesozoic pyroclastic rocks, intrusive breccia, granites and felsic porphyries comprise a volcano-plutonic complex, overlying and intruding the Precambrian Gyeonggi gneiss complex. pyroclastic rocks, consisted mainly of rhyolitic welded tuffs, form a topographic circular structure about 10 kilometers in diameter. Granites and felsic porphyries which intruded the pyroclastic rocks are distributed in the inner side and also along the outer margin of the circular structure. K-Ar ages of two granite bodies(biotite), 162 and $148{\pm}7$ Ma, and that of the intrusive rhyolite (whole rock), $121{\pm}6$ Ma indicate that a series of volcano-plutonic igneous activity occurred between Jurassic and early Cretaceous age. Petrochemical characteristics suggest that the pyroclastic rocks, granites and felsic porphyries were originated from the comagmatic source. From the evidences of field occurrence, petrochemical and geochronological characteristics of igneous rocks and the geologic structures, it is believed that the igneous rocks in the Bupyeong district were formed during a Jurassic to early Cretaceous resurgent caldera evolution.

  • As the function of digital products gets diverse and complex, more than 30~40% job of software developing and testing group within its development cycle, concentrates on the software testing[1]. To cope with consumers'quickly changing needs, development cycle time gets short, and the number of model and test items increase steadily This is why automating software basic function and UI(User Interface) verification is needed [4][5][6]. This paper draws many strength and weakness defines Input/Output through integrating mobile phone, DVDP, PDA, and Black-Box (Intrusive (mobile) or Non-Intrusive(DVDP, PDA)) testing systematically, which brought above the 64% average of automation rate, and ensure 80% of test coverage [4][5][6].

  • The Chisulryoung Volcanic Formation comprises a thick sequence of pyroclastic flow deposits. Six members are distinguished, each representing separate flow units, comprising weakly to intensely welded acidic tuffs. A stock of welded acidic tuff, 1 km in diameter, intrudes hornblende granodiorite and sediments of Late Cretaceous age and the lower part of the Chisulryoung Volcanic Tuff Formation and may represent the vent through which the upper flows of the Chisulryoug Volcanic Formation were erupted.
