In this paper, we propose a new $4{\times}4$ intra coding method by unidirectional prediction for improvement of intra-frame coding efficiency of H.264/AVC. There are $4{\times}4$, $8{\times}8$, and $16{\times}16$ intra prediction modes in the current H.264/AVC. For the $4{\times}4$ intra prediction, coding efficiency is achieved by accurate prediction with small block size in relatively complicated regions, and the $16{\times}16$ intra prediction method can predict more accurately compared to $4{\times}4$ intra prediction with only one directional information in relatively homogeneous regions. We propose a unidirectional $4{\times}4$ intra prediction method adopting a small-size prediction and one directional prediction approaches. In order to improve coding efficiency, the proposed method is conducted by $4{\times}4$ block and their prediction directions are all the same, resulting that we need to send only one directional information for each macroblock. For intra-frame coding setting, we achieve 10.47% and 1.57% coding efficiency in BD-bitrate for only $16{\times}16$ intra mode and $4{\times}4$, $16{\times}16$ intra mode, respectively.
We present intra-mixture prediction (IMP) mode for intra prediction and an enhanced estimation method for most probable mode (MPM). IMP mode supports more flexibility in intra prediction by mixing $4{\times}4$ blocks and $8{\times}8$ blocks in one macroblock, while the enhanced MPM estimation extends the number of referenced neighboring blocks and efficiently uses their prediction modes depending on their positions. Simulation results show that the combination of both proposed methods provides a bit reduction in the Bj${\phi}$ntegaard delta bitrate by an average of 2.56% compared to H.264/AVC.
In this paper, we proposed an intra coding method with merging intra prediction mode to achieve intra coding gain. The proposed method uses signaling of prediction mode with merging prediction modes, which is different from the conventional method. If the number of blocks that has the same prediction mode compared to that to be predicted from neighboring blocks exceeds the predefined threshold, then the proposed method is used in order to reduce bits of intra prediction mode for coding efficiency. Otherwise the conventional method is used. Experimental results show the proposed method achieves the PSNR gain of about 0.05 dB in RD curve and reduces the bit rates about 1 % compared with H.264/AVC. In particular, the PSNR gain of about 0.1 dB in RD curve and reduces the bit rates about 1.7 % compared with H.264/AVC at low bit-rates. we can know that the proposed method is efficient tool at low bit-rates.

For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264 standard uses new coding tools such as VBS, 1/4-pel accurate ME, multiple references, intra prediction, loop filter, etc. Using these coding tools, H.264 has achieved significant improvements from rate-distortion point of view compared to existing standards. However, the encoder complexity is greatly increased due to these coding tools. We focus on the complexity reduction method of MB mode selection. Among all modes which can be selected, $8{\times}8$ and intra $4{\times}4$ mode have higher complexity than the others. So we propose the methods for reduction of the $8{\times}8$ and intra $4{\times}4$ mode complexity by using information of other modes with relatively low complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed methods save up to $54.6{\%}$ of total encoding time while keeping the average decrease about 0.012dB in PSNR.

In this paper, we propose a design of Intra prediction angular mode decision for HEVC encoder. Intra prediction coding of HEVC is a method for predicting a current block by referring to samples reconstructed around a current block. Intra prediction supports a total of 35 modes with 1 DC mode, 1 Planar mode, and 33 Angular modes. Intra prediction coding of HEVC works by performing all 35 modes for efficient encoding. However, in order to process all of the 35 modes, the computational complexity and operational time required are high. Therefore, this paper proposes comparing the difference in the value of the original pixel, using an algorithm that determines angular mode efficiently. This new algorithm reduces the Hardware size. The hardware which is proposed was designed using Verilog HDL and was implemented in 65nm technology. Its gate count is 14.9K and operating speed is 2GHz.

The H.264/AVC video coding standard shows extremely higher coding efficiency, but it causes high computational complexity. Especially, the intra mode decision using the rate-distortion method requires many computations. Thus, the efficient intra mode decision methods have been proposed by decreasing the encoding complexity. In this paper, we propose an efficient intra mode decision algorithm using $4{\times}4$ integer transform coefficients in the conversion of MPEG-2 to H.264 standard. It is shown that the proposed algorithm reduces encoding time and complexity compared to the conventional algorithm, while showing similar PSNR performance.

H.264/AVC video coding standard enables a considerably higher improvement in coding efficiency compared with previous standards such as MPEG-2, H.263 and MPEG-4. To achieve this, for each macro-block in H.264/AVC, Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) technique is employed to select the best motion vector, reference frame, and macro-block mode. As a result, computational complexity is increased significantly whereas RDO achieve higher improvement. This paper presents fast intra mode selection algorithm based on constraints of frequency characteristics which are derived from intra coding modes of H.264/AVC. First of all, we observe the features of each intra mode through the frequency analysis of image. And then proposed Frequency Error Costs (FECs) are calculated to select the best mode which has minimum cost. Computational complexity is considerably reduced because rate-distortion costs only calculate the candidate modes which are set of best mode and its neighbouring two modes. Experimental results show that proposed algorithm reduces the complexity dramatically maintaining the rate-distortion performance compared with H.264/AVC reference software.

We propose an adaptive combination scheme of intra and inter prediction modes, where uni-directional intra prediction, bi-directional intra prediction, and inter prediction method are adaptively selected in an EMB (extended macro block). For each EMB, after all inter blocks have been encoded and decoded, the reconstructed blocks are used as reference data for bi-directional intra prediction of other blocks. Whereas conventional intra coding scheme does not use the right and below side pixels of the current block as reference data, the proposed method uses those for bi-directional intra prediction mode. In this paper, we propose three advanced techniques; (a) filter design for bi-directional prediction, (b) adaptive coding order scheme which increases the chance to use the bi-directional intra prediction mode, (c) modification of syntax to represent coding order. The information for the coding order is informed to the decoder by using the modified syntax structure without adding any additional flag. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the BD-Rate by 0.5%, on average, compared to KTA.
Versatile Video Coding (VVC), which has been developing as a next generation video coding standard, has adopted various techniques to achieve more than twice the compression performance of HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). The recently released VVC Test Model (VTM) shows 38% Bjontegaard Delta bitrate (BD-rate) improvement and 9x/1.6x encoding/decoding complexity over HEVC. In order to reduce such increased complexity, various fast algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, gradient-based methods of fast intra mode decision and block splitting are presented. Experimental results show that, compared to VTM6.0, the proposed method gives up to 65% encoding time reduction with 3.54% BD-rate loss in All-Intra (AI) configuration.

In this paper, we analyse the characteristics of the edge image and propose a new entropy coding optimized to the compression of the edge image. The pixel values of the edge image have the Gaussian distribution around '0', and most of the pixel values are '0'. By using this analysis, the Zero Block technique is utilized in spatial domain. And the Intra Prediction Mode of the edge image is similar to the mode of the surrounding blocks or likely to be the Planar Mode or the Horizontal Mode. In this paper, we make use of the MPM technique that produces the Intra Prediction Mode with high probability modes. By utilizing the above properties, we design a new entropy coding method that is suitable for edge image and perform the compression. In case the existing compression techniques are applied to edge image, compression ratio is low and the algorithm is complicated as more than necessity and the running time is very long, because those techniques are based on the natural images. However, the compression ratio and the running time of the proposed technique is high and very short, respectively, because the proposed algorithm is optimized to the compression of the edge image. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm provides better visual and PSNR performance up to 11 times than the JPEG.
