Cobitis sinensis - longicorpus complex were commonly found in the upper stream of the Nakdong River in Korea and consisted of mostly with diploid and triploid karyotype forms. Among them, the triploid females of C. sinensis - longicorpus were artificially crossed with diploid males from C. sinensis and diploid males from C. longicorpus, respectively. The progenies from each cross produced the diploid individuals that possessed the paternal characters in their karyotypes and their body color patterns. Based on this results, we can assume that the triploid females, C. sinensis - longicorpus have a peculiar reproductive mode eliminating an uneven genome by the primary meiotic division and then producing a haploid ovum by secondary meiosis.
In this paper, a new hybrid species, Pulsatilla ${\times}$ yanbianensis H.Z. Lv, is named and described from the Yanbian area of Jilin Province in China. Molecular data confirm that this taxon is a result of natural hybridization between P. dahurica and P. cernua. As intermediate and mosaic phenotypes are expected for an interspecific hybrid, the leaves of P. ${\times}$ yanbianensis are fully expanded at the anthesis, resembling one of the parental species, P. daurica. However, the hybrid taxon is distinct from P. daurica by having reddish violet sepals and sterile fruits. Pulsatilla ${\times}$ yanbianensis also resembles the other parental species, P. cernua, in that it has dark red sepals and styles. The new hybrid, however, can be distinguished from P. cernua because it has leaf margins with short hairs and fully expanded leaves at the anthesis.
The genus Paeonia belongs to the family Paeoniaceae having significant medicinal and ornamental importance. The present investigation was undertaken with an aim to understand phylogenetic relationships of three Paeonia species (P. lactiflora, P. obovata, and P. suffruticosa) that are widely distributed in China, Korea, and Japan, using nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence and to compare the phylogeny results with investigations reported earlier using existed sequences of the same species. The size variation obtained among sequenced nrDNA ITS region was narrow and ranged from 722 to 726 bp. The highest interspecific genetic distance (GD) was found between P. lactiflora and P. suffruticosa or P. obovata. The phylogram obtained using our nrDNA ITS sequences showed non-congruence with previous hypothesis of the phylogeny between section Paeonia and section Moutan of genus Paeonia. This result was supported by the phylogenetic relations showed in the phylogram constructed with existed sequences in NCBI. The present study suggested that P. obovata belonging to section Paeonia was phylogenetically closer to P. suffruticosa representing section Moutan of genus Paeonia than P. lactiflora belonging to section Paeonia. The main reason of the paraphyly of section Paeonia is thought to be nucleotide additivity directly caused by origin hybridization. This study provides more sequence sources of genus Paeonia, and will help for further studies in intraspecies population, and their phylogentic analysis and molecular evolution.

Abalones are gastropod mollusks belonging to the genus Haliotis. Fishery products are continuously declining worldwide while abalone production from aquatic farms has considerably increased. Although abalones are regarded as very important marine resources and considered to have big potential in sea-food farming industry around world, the slow growth rate of Pacific abalones is considered to be one of the most serious problems. For the genetic improvements in cultured abalone, advances in various breeding techniques for abalone have been reached through the introduction of selection, crossbreeding, hybridization, and polyploidy in several commercially important abalone species. Six species of abalone have been reported to be distributed along the coasts of Korea: Haliotis discus hannai, Haliotis discus discus, Haliotis madaka, Haliotis gigantea, Haliotis diversicolor diversicolor, and Haliotis diversicolor supertexta. The hybridization between these abalones may be one of the advanced technologies, and the preliminary experiments of interspecific hybrids between abalone species distributed in northern pacific areas including Korea, China, and Japan have been conducted. In this study, we reviewed the phylogenetic relationship of northern pacific abalone species which have the potential traits for aquaculture in Korea and their identifications. We also examined the development of molecular markers and some other aspects of the genetic approaches for successful development of hybrids.
The hatchability of the artificially induced hybrid between two groupers (family Serranidae), red spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara) and brown-marbled grouper (E. fuscoguttatus) that lives in different habit environment was investigated. There was no difference in the required time of each developmental stages after fertilization between hybrid (red spotted grouper ♀ ${\times}$ brown-marbled grouper ♂) and purebred (red spotted grouper ♀${\times}$♂) and required 25.6 hours to hatch at incubated in $25^{\circ}C$, but a noticeable unequal cleavage in cell size was observed in hybrid eggs unlikely to purebred. The hatching rate of fertilized eggs of hybrid was generally low across the four incubate temperatures (22, 25, 28, $31^{\circ}C$) with highest 9.8% in $25^{\circ}C$. This study demonstrated the possibility of artificial hybridization between two groupers, red spotted grouper and brown-marbled grouper, thus preparing the groundwork on developmental characteristics, deformities of hatched larvae and early survival ability for further studies on aquaculture.
A natural hybrid of interspecific between the Coreoleuciscus splendidus and C. aeruginos (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) was captured in the Hwang-ji Stream, a tributary of the Nakdong River basin in Korea. An interspecific hybrid between C. splendidus and C. aeruginos was genetically identified based on morphological characteristics and the sequence analysis of nuclear recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1) gene (1,334 bp) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene (1,551 bp). As a result of morphological variations, the natural hybrid appeared to have an intermediate character between two parental species (C. splendidus and C. aeruginos) in three variations of black array (s) on dorsal, caudal and anal fin rays. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from RAG1 and CO1 sequence data revealed that Coreoleuciscus populations from Hwang-ji stream consist of two pure Coreoleuciscus species and a hybrid individual group. The individuals were clearly identified the cross and reciprocal hybrid by CO1 gene analysis. In RAG1 gene, 13 nucleotide variation loci were detected and the hybrid individuals displayed the double peaks of sequence chromatograms at the 9 diagnostic positions. In this study, molecular data and morphological variations were clearly demonstrated that hybridization did occur between C. splendidus and C. aeruginos. However, F2 hybrid generation and reproductive capacity of F1 hybrid individuals were not demonstrated.
The three self-compatible, terrestrial orchids Cephalanthera erecta, C. falcata, and C. longibracteata flower synchronously in sympatric populations. Cephalanthera erecta and C. longibracteata, which have white flowers that do not fully open, are predominantly autogamous, whereas the food-deceptive C. falcata, whose bright yellow flowers open completely, is predominantly outcrossing. The formation of hybrids rarely occurs between species owing to strong prepollination barriers (floral isolation). If these three species have evolved toward the prevention of interspecific hybridization, we can expect that the spatial distribution patterns of the three species would be characterized as spatial segregation (i.e., 'spatial repulsion') from each other. To test this prediction, we studied the three Cephalanthera species in sympatric populations showing coincident flowering within Yeonwhasan Provincial Park (YPP, Gyeongsangnam Province, South Korea). We found strong spatial aggregation in each population and spatial independence in the interspecific spatial distribution, differing from previous studies. We further hypothesize that Cephalanthera species in sympatry within YPP are distributed somewhat randomly in space, perhaps due to the sharing of similar mycorrhizal fungi.
Cytogenetic studies and hybridization experiment using two populations of Oryzias latipes from Korea were conducted in order to examine their systematic positions. In the chromosome number of specimens examined. O. sinensis had 46 with a pair of large metacentrics and O. latipes had 48 chromosomes without a pair of large metacentrics. However, the diploid chromosome number of the hybrid between O. latipes and O. sinensis was 47 and they had a large metarcentric chromosome in their karyotype. In the $F_2$ hybrids, distribution of chromosome number was variable among individuals. Hatching rates showed little difference between control and hybrids. However, hatchiabilties of $F_2$ hybrids were decreased by 83.3% as compared with $F_1$ offspring. Incidence of abnormal larvae was increased by 15.3% as compared with their parents. These results indicate that the two karyotype populations formerly regarded as two subspecies would be two distinct allopatric sibling species O. sinensis, and O. latipes.

Current rose cultivars are all composed of heterozygous genome due to long history of out crossing including interspecific hybridization. It has been adapted by artificial selection and crossing by breeders that mainly based on the crossing with fertile pollen derived from inter- or intra-specific hybridization. Pollen viability and germination ability tests provide valuable information for the designing of parentage for more successful breeding efficacy. In this study, we tested the pollen viability and germination ability in seven rose cultivars to find any relationship among several factors including pollen size, ploidy levels, and crossing compatibility. The pollen viability showed wide ranges from 39% 'Pinocchio' as minimum to 82% 'Scarlet Mimi' as maximum, whereas pollen germination rate were from 1% 'Mini Rosa' to 41% 'Scarlet Mimi' as a highest. Pollen size ranged from 41.3 to $45.4{\mu}m$ in large sized pollen and 30.7 to $37.4{\mu}m$ in small sized pollen. The mean diameter of large sized pollen is approximately 10-40% bigger than that of small sized pollen. There are positive relationships among ploidy level, total chromosome length, and pollen size. Crossing list showed that seed setting ratio and seed germination were related to pollen viability, pollen germination, and ploidy level.

The objective of this study was to identify and quantify glucosinolates (GSLs) in Brassica napus cv. Hanakkori and its parents and to evaluate its potential bitter taste. 'Hanakkori' materials were cultivated with commercial chemical nutrients (20 kg/ha, N-P-K: 16-10-10) at the field. GSLs were isolated by means of extraction with 70%(v/v) boiling methanol (MeOH) followed by desulfation from those plants by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and identified by electronic spray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis. In 'Hanakkori', 11 GSLs were identified as progoitrin, glucoraphanin, glucoalyssin, gluconapoleiferin, gluconapin, 1-methylpropyl, glucobrassicanapin, glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, gluconasturtiin, and neoglucobrassicin. The total GSL contents were 109 and 36.1 mmol/kg dry weights (d.w.) for the seeds and edible parts, respectively. The major GSLs (>5 mmol/kg d.w.) in the seeds were progoitrin (78.8), gluconapin (10.7), and glucobrassicanapin (7.81), whereas they in the edible parts were progoitrin (16.1) and glucobrassicanapin (8.58). In addition, the bitter taste in the edible parts was presumably related with the presence of progoitrin (>45% to the total GSL).
