  • The objective of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the pedestrian accidents of roundabout near schools. To this end, this study has focus on the comparative analysis of pedestrian accidents across different school areas. The traffic accident data from 2007 to 2014 are collected from TAAS data set of Road Traffic Authority. To develop the pedestrian accident rate model, the linear regression model has been utilized in this study. 28 explanatory variables such as geometry and traffic volume factors are used. The main results are summarized as follows. First, the null hypotheses that the number of pedestrian accidents are the same are rejected. Second, 5 multiple linear regression accident models with higher statistical significance (adjusted $R^2$ of 0.651~0.788) have been developed. Third, while the common variables of 3 models (model I~III) related to school location are evaluated to be the pedestrian island, crosswalk, types of roundabout, elementary school and bus stop. Fourth, while the common variable of 3 models (model III~V) related to near school area or not is evaluated to be pedestrian island, type of roundabout, sidewalk, elementary school, speed hump, speed limit sign and number of entry lane. As a result, the installation of pedestrian islands and crosswalk might be expected to decrease the number of pedestrian accidents near schools.

  • The number of car crashes increases along with the increasing number of vehicles. Hence, diverse initiatives on traffic accidents have been implemented, targeting zero crash fatalities. According to the 3rd Traffic Safety Master Plan of 2016, the current standard selecting road accident black spots prioritizes locations with the high cumulative death toll. While this standard is suitable for roads that a city government manages to some extent, it is not suitable for roads less than 20 meters that a borough (Gu) handles. The roads under the supervision of a borough do not have enough death toll, and thus improvements on its road accident black spots are highly limited. In addition, discovering the causes of traffic accidents is not easy when the number of car accidents is obtained by considering only fatal accidents, which are relatively low in number. Therefore, including all traffic accidents might identify causes of accidents and result in better advancements. Therefore, this research follows rational decision-making and suggests new National Traffic Safety Master Plan standards. These new standards are obtained by comparing accident costs between the location of fatal crashes and road accident black spots. The analysis result shows that considering all types of accidents yields better results. For example, a Three-way Intersection in front of Zion Day Care Center, one of the selected spots under the current standard, has lower road crash costs than Sinchon Intersection, a selected spot under a new standard. Therefore, the study concludes that the standards to select road accident black spots need to include traffic accident severity and road crash costs.

  • Since oil spills can be a significant threat to the marine ecosystem, it is necessary to obtain information on the current contamination status quickly to minimize the damage. Satellite-based detection of marine oil spills has the advantage of spatiotemporal coverage because it can monitor a wide area compared to aircraft. Due to the recent development of computer vision and deep learning, marine oil spill detection can also be facilitated by deep learning. Unlike the existing studies based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, we conducted a deep learning modeling using PlanetScope optical satellite images. The blind test of the DeepLabV3+ model for oil spill detection showed the performance statistics with an accuracy of 0.885, a precision of 0.888, a recall of 0.886, an F1-score of 0.883, and a Mean Intersection over Union (mIOU) of 0.793.

  • Sarcopenia is not well known enough to be classified as a disease in 2021 in Korea, but it is recognized as a social problem in developed countries that have entered an aging society. The diagnosis of sarcopenia follows the international standard guidelines presented by the European Working Group for Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) and the d Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). Recently, it is recommended to evaluate muscle function by using physical performance evaluation, walking speed measurement, and standing test in addition to absolute muscle mass as a diagnostic method. As a representative method for measuring muscle mass, the body composition analysis method using DEXA has been formally implemented in clinical practice. In addition, various studies for measuring muscle mass using abdominal images of MRI or CT are being actively conducted. In this paper, we develop an AI image segmentation model based on abdominal images of CT with a relatively short imaging time for the diagnosis of sarcopenia and describe the multicenter validation. We developed an artificial intelligence model using U-Net that can automatically segment muscle, subcutaneous fat, and visceral fat by selecting the L3 region from the CT image. Also, to evaluate the performance of the model, internal verification was performed by calculating the intersection over union (IOU) of the partitioned area, and the results of external verification using data from other hospitals are shown. Based on the verification results, we tried to review and supplement the problems and solutions.

  • Floods are becoming more severe and frequent due to global warming-induced climate change. Water disasters are rising in Korea due to severe rainfall and wet seasons. This makes preventive climate change measures and efficient water catastrophe responses crucial, and synthetic aperture radar satellite imagery can help. This research created 1,423 water body learning datasets for individual water body regions along the Han and Nakdong waterways to reflect domestic water body properties discovered by Sentinel-1 satellite radar imagery. We created a document with exact data annotation criteria for many situations. After the dataset was processed, U-Net, a deep learning model, analyzed water body detection results. The results from applying the learned model to water body locations not involved in the learning process were studied to validate soil water body monitoring on a national scale. The analysis showed that the created water body area detected water bodies accurately (F1-Score: 0.987, Intersection over Union [IoU]: 0.955). Other domestic water body regions not used for training and evaluation showed similar accuracy (F1-Score: 0.941, IoU: 0.89). Both outcomes showed that the computer accurately spotted water bodies in most areas, however tiny streams and gloomy areas had problems. This work should improve water resource change and disaster damage surveillance. Future studies will likely include more water body attribute datasets. Such databases could help manage and monitor water bodies nationwide and shed light on misclassified regions.

  • The status of groundwater development in Chungnam was studied with geological characteristics according to the measured data of Korean Rural Development Corporation. The data of 212 survey wells were used for the relation between catchment area and water discharge, and the data of 344 development wells for the relationships between well depth and discharge, between casing depth and discharge, between rock type and discharge, and the relation with lineaments density. The relationship between the catchment area and discharge does not show any special trend, and it is understood that groundwater of hard rock mass is not so much influenced by the surface catchment area. The relationship between well depth and discharge shows two different trends; discharge increasing with depth for alluvial groundwater, but no certain trend between depth and discharge for groundwater of hard rock zone. Discharge increases linearly with the casing depth, and it is reliable because the casing was installed in the weathered zone against well destruction. Generally the rock type does not show any difference of discharge, but the crystalline rocks such as granite and gneiss yield a little more discharge than the more porous rocks such as sedimentary rock or schist. It suggests that the effect of fracture zone is a major governing factor. In Hongsong and Puyo, there are similar in rock type and casing depth, but the big difference in average discharge. The big discharge of Hongsong is concordant with the higher intersection density and longer length of lineament in Hongsong than those of Puyo. Therefore the groundwater development strategy should be focused on the micro topography analysis and geophysical survey for the understanding of the fracture zone rather than catchment area or rock type.

  • The object of this study was to analyze the speciality of Korean traditional waterscape and unique landscape formed with reflection of the phases of the time sat the area of Juhabru(宙合樓) in Changdeok Palace as a basic research to find the prototype of Taeaek pond at Changdeok Palace and restoration of the palace. Originally, Taeaek pond at Changdeok Palace was constructed in KingInjo(仁祖) period as a name of Yongji(龍池), later it called Taeaek pond after King Sukjong(肅宗). There is an island as a symbol of the immortal isle, and Chungseojeong(淸署亭), Taiksujae(澤水齋) and Buyongjeong(芙蓉亭) which were built to view the waterscape in Taeaek pond. Buildings were built asymmetrical balance around Taeaek pond because of the morphological character of tetragonal pond. Arrangement of this area has a definite form of axial structure. Yeolgokwan(閱古觀) Gaeyuwa(皆有窩), pavilions, bridges, islands, Osumoon(魚水門) and Juhabru are located on the north and south axis, and island and Osumoon play a role as a intersection and form an east of west axis. In this study, manual of construction for an island and pavilions is provided by analyzing transformational process of island and pavilions at Taeaek pond. Furthermore, kings and officials used to statically enjoy the view around Taeaek pond area, but dynamic fishing and boating activity happened in King Jungjo(正祖) period. These historical backgrounds have an influence on the spatial organization of Taeaek pond. For instance, bridge between Taeaek pond and island was destroyed with the increase of the importance of boating. Symbolic structure around Taeaek pond means 'fish changes to dragon' and 'both of king and officials become one'. Taiksujai, carving fish, Osumoon and Juhabru are provided as a related spatial factors.
