Mobile devices have been widespread and become very popular with connectivity to the Internet, and a lot of desktop PC applications are now aggressively ported to them. Unfortunately, mobile devices are often vulnerable to malicious attacks due to their common usage and connectivity to the Internet. Therefore, the demands on the development of mobile security systems increase in accordance with advances in mobile computing. However, it is very hard to run a security program on a mobile device all of the time due the device's limited computational power and battery life. To overcome these problems, we propose a novel mobile security scheme that migrates heavy computations on mobile devices to cloud servers. An efficient data transmission scheme for reducing data traffic between devices and servers over networks is introduced. We have evaluated the proposed scheme with a mobile device in a cloud environment, whereby it achieved a maximum speedup of 13.4 compared to a traditional algorithm.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) consist of a large amount of sensor nodes distributed in a certain region. Due to the limited battery power of a sensor node, lots of energy-efficient schemes have been studied. Clustering is primarily used for energy efficiency purpose. However, clustering in WSNs faces several unattained issues, such as ensuring connectivity and scheduling inter-cluster transmissions. In this paper, we propose a location-based spiral clustering (LBSC) algorithm for improving connectivity and avoiding inter-cluster collisions. It also provides reliable location aware routing paths from all cluster heads to a sink node during cluster formation. Proposed algorithm can simultaneously make clusters in four spiral directions from the center of sensor field by using the location information and residual energy level of neighbor sensor nodes. Three logical addresses are used for categorizing the clusters into four global groups and scheduling the intra- and inter-cluster transmission time for each cluster. We evaluated the performance with simulations and compared it with other algorithms.

As a main challenge in network virtualization, virtual network embedding problem is increasingly important and heuristic algorithms are of great interest. Aiming at the problems of poor correlation in node embedding and link embedding, long distance between adjacent virtual nodes and imbalance resource consumption of network components during embedding, we herein propose a two-stage virtual network embedding algorithm NA-PVNM. In node embedding stage, resource requirement and breadth first search algorithm are introduced to sort virtual nodes, and a node fitness function is developed to find the best substrate node. In link embedding stage, a path fitness function is developed to find the best path in which available bandwidth, CPU and path length are considered. Simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm could shorten link embedding distance, increase the acceptance ratio and revenue to cost ratio compared to previously reported algorithms. We also analyzed the impact of position constraint and substrate network attribute on algorithm performance, as well as the utilization of the substrate network resources during embedding via simulation. The results showed that, under the constraint of substrate resource distribution and virtual network requests, the critical factor of improving success ratio is to reduce resource consumption during embedding.

Efficient key distribution and management mechanisms as well as lightweight ciphers are the main pillar for establishing secure wireless sensor networks (WSN). Several symmetric based key distribution protocols are already proposed, but most of them are not scalable, yet vulnerable to a small number of compromised nodes. In this paper, we propose an efficient and scalable key management and distribution framework, named KMMR, for large scale WSNs. The KMMR contributions are three fold. First, it performs lightweight local processes orchestrated into upward and downward tiers. Second, it limits the impact of compromised nodes to only local links. Third, KMMR performs efficient secure node addition and revocation. The security analysis shows that KMMR withstands several known attacks. We implemented KMMR using the NesC language and experimented on Telosb motes. Performance evaluation using the TOSSIM simulator shows that KMMR is scalable, provides an excellent key connectivity and allows a good resilience, yet it ensures both forward and backward secrecy. For a WSN comprising 961 sensor nodes monitoring a 60 hectares agriculture field, KMMR requires around 2.5 seconds to distribute all necessary keys, and attains a key connectivity above 96% and a resilience approaching 100%. Quantitative comparisons to earlier work show that KMMR is more efficient in terms of computational complexity, required storage space and communication overhead.

Connectivity and trust in social networks have been exploited to propose applications on top of these networks, including routing, Sybil defenses, and anonymous communication systems. In these networks, and for such applications, connectivity ensures good performance of applications while trust is assumed to always hold, so as collaboration and good behavior are always guaranteed. In this paper, we study the impact of differential behavior of users on performance in typical social network-enabled routing applications. We classify users into either collaborative or rational (probabilistically collaborative) and study the impact of this classification and the associated behavior of users on the performance of such applications, including random walk-based routing, shortest path based routing, breadth-first-search based routing, and Dijkstra routing. By experimenting with real-world social network traces, we make several interesting observations. First, we show that some of the existing social graphs have high routing costs, demonstrating poor structure that prevents their use in such applications. Second, we study the factors that make probabilistically collaborative nodes important for the performance of the routing protocol within the entire network and demonstrate that the importance of these nodes stems from their topological features rather than their percentage of all the nodes within the network.

The propagation of smart devices and the rapid expansion of wireless mobile networks have increased the need for ubiquitous device connectivity and contents access. DLNA is currently being used as the de facto standard for connectivity of consumer devices in the digital home. The guidelines provided by DLNA are intended to facilitate device and contents discovery, management, sharing and distribution. However, consumer experience with DLNA has been rather poor and usability not up to speed. Different problems and issues in limited compatibility have been reported due to manufacturer customizations. Such compatibility issues are often difficult to identify by average consumers who are not savvy in information communications and multimedia technology. In this paper, the design and implementation of a DLNA protocol inspection tool is presented for compatibility analysis among DLNA certified devices. The tool monitors the home network and performs analysis of the underlying protocols used by DLNA. The tool can be used for diagnostics and troubleshooting, enabling the user to identify compatibility issues between devices or problems in the network.

The network topology for a wide area sensor network has to support connectivity and a prolonged lifetime for the many applications used within it. The concepts of structure and group in sociology are similar to the concept of cluster in wireless sensor networks. The clustering method is one of the preferred ways to produce a topology for reduced electrical energy consumption. We herein propose a cluster topology method based on sociological structures and concepts. The proposed sociological clustering topology (SOCT) is a method that forms a network in two phases. The first phase, which from a sociological perspective is similar to forming a state within a nation, involves using nodes with large transmission capacity to set up the global area for the cluster. The second phase, which is similar to forming a city inside the state, involves using nodes with small transmission capacity to create regional clusters inside the global cluster to provide connectivity within the network. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other methods in terms of energy efficiency and network lifetime.

Wireless Sensor Networks have extensively been utilized for ambient data collection from simple linear structures to dense tiered deployments. Issues related to optimal resource allocation still persist for simplistic deployments including linear and hierarchical networks. In this work, we investigate the case of dimensioning parameters for linear and tiered wireless sensor network deployments with notion of providing extended lifetime and reliable data delivery over extensive infrastructures. We provide a single consolidated reference for selection of intrinsic sensor network parameters like number of required nodes for deployment over specified area, network operational lifetime, data aggregation requirements, energy dissipation concerns and communication channel related signal reliability. The dimensioning parameters have been analyzed in a pipeline monitoring scenario using ZigBee communication platform and subsequently referred with analytical models to ensure the dimensioning process is reflected in real world deployment with minimum resource consumption and best network connectivity. Concerns over data aggregation and routing delay minimization have been discussed with possible solutions. Finally, we propose a node placement strategy based on a dynamic programming model for achieving reliable received signals and consistent application in structural health monitoring with multi hop and long distance connectivity.

This paper discusses how to effectively guarantee the coverage and connectivity quality of wireless sensor networks when joint perception model is used for the nodes whose communication ranges are multi-level adjustable in the absence of position information. A Connect Coverage Algorithm Based on Joint Sensing model (CCAJS) is proposed, with which least working nodes are chosen based on probability model ensuring the coverage quality of the network. The algorithm can balance the position distribution of selected working nodes as far as possible, as well as reduce the overall energy consumption of the whole network. The simulation results show that, less working nodes are needed to ensure the coverage quality of networks using joint perception model than using the binary perception model. CCAJS can not only satisfy expected coverage quality and connectivity, but also decrease the energy consumption, thereby prolonging the network lifetime.
