Strategic Trade Policies under International Process R&D Competition with or without Market Leaders

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to study strategic trade policies under international process research and development (R&D) competition with or without market leaders for free trade and a subsidy regime and compare the effects of R&D subsidies and export subsidies on the equilibrium levels of firm profit and social welfare. Design/methodology - For the analysis, we use previous work by Haaland and Kind (2008) and construct a differentiated goods duopoly model, wherein two firms compete via quantity in a third-country market for free trade and the subsidy regime. We consider simultaneous-move quantity competition when the two firms choose their quantities simultaneously and sequential-move quantity competition when they choose their quantities sequentially. The results are compared to those of Balboa, Daughety and Reinganum (2004), who studied export subsidies. Findings - The following are the findings. First, the results of firm preference orderings regarding firm position from Dowrick (1986) and Balboa, Daughety and Reinganum (2004) may not hold in our model when the firms' strategies are strategic substitutes under free trade. Second, the preference rankings under Cournot competition for free trade and a subsidy regime are the same as those in the strategic trade policy of export subsidy. Third, except for the cases of too close substitutes and complements, the results of firm and government preferences regarding firm position are different from those of Balboa, Daughety and Reinganum (2004) in that Stackelberg leadership in a subsidy regime is advantageous when the goods are substitutes but is disadvantageous when the goods are complements. Moreover, the equilibrium level of firm profit is the highest in the Cournot-Nash play when the goods are substitutes in a subsidy regime. Fourth, except for the cases of too close substitutes and complements, the results of firms' and their respective governments' trade regime preferences are similar to those of Balboa, Daughety and Reinganum (2004) in that a Stackelberg leader firm and government prefer free trade if the goods are substitutes and prefer a subsidy regime if the goods are complements. Furthermore, a Stackelberg follower firm and government strongly prefer a subsidy regime to free trade. Originality/value - By analyzing the effects of R&D subsidies and export subsidies in international markets, we can find similarities and differences between them in international markets.

  • Full-fledged competitions in Korea have been held since 2000, while the competitions have shown a wide variety of chaos in holding, deploying, developing, declining, and suspending them from the context of uncountable needs and demands. At the present time, we have to establish an identity of the competitions, being aware of the importance of it. And positive efforts should be made to prepare the future. "Gyeonggi Furniture Design Contest" that started in 2003 and became 10th in 2012, should be evaluated by the performance and operation seriously. Therefore, as the GFDC related data for 10 years are diagnosed and analyzed thoroughly, its identity will be established. Finally, the competition will be able to create the progressive strategy and concrete measure to develop the steps on an international design competition.

초고층 미래주택 공모전 수상작에서 나타난 지속가능 계획특성 추출 연구 (A Study to Extract Sustainable Planning Characteristics of Future Skyscraper from Competition Awarded Housing Projects)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to extract the sustainable characteristics of skyscraper housing design. Method: The method of the study was literature survey and content analysis techniques, and the target cases were 8 skyscraper housing design projects awarded from eVolo Skyscraper international competition. The sustainable features for analysis were categorized into social, cultural, economical and ecological sustainability and total 26 elements. Result: As a result, important elements were extracted, and profiles of elements in the projects were delineated, out of 26 design elements: 'Aesthetics', 'Climate Change', 'Resource Using Efficiency', 'Technical Innovation', 'local Employment' were shown dominant. While 8 projects showed the whole range of 26 elements, even though the project what by now is still an important problem for skyscraper, the result gives an insight into future sustainable skyscraper housing design.

국제설계경기 평가에서 건축가와 도시계획가의 관점차이 분석 (Analysis on the Differences of Point of View between Architect and Urban Planner on the Evaluation of International Urban Design Competition)

  • 대규모 개발사업은 도시계획 Master Plan 위에 개별 건축물을 설계, 시공하는 과정을 거친다. 이 때 사업을 바라보는 도시계획가와 건축가의 시각은 그들이 다루는 계획의 범위만큼이나 큰 차이를 보인다. 본 연구의 목적은 용산국제업무지구 국제설계경기에 지명응모한 회사(SOM, Jerde Partnership, Studio Daniel Libeskind, Foster+Partners and Asymptote Architecture)의 작품에 대한 건축가와 도시계획가의 관점 차이를 분석하는데 있다. 평가방법은 계층분석법을 사용하였으며, 평가기준은 마스터플랜과 랜드마크타워 부문으로 설정되었다. 마스터플랜의 계획요소는 개념, 토지이용, 교통, 사업성이며, 랜드마크타워는 개념, 입지, 기능효율성, 조형미이다. 두 그룹별로 각각의 요소에 대한 중요도를 도출함으로써 각각의 그룹이 가지는 시각 차이를 정량화하고자 하였다. 분석결과 대규모 개발사업에 대한 건축가와 도시계획가의 시작차이는 분명한 것으로 나타났다. 건축가는 랜드마크타워(0.505)에 중점을 두었지만, 도시계획가는 마스터 플랜(0.642)에 중점을 두는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한, 마스터플랜 계획요소는 토지이용, 사업성, 교통 등이 높게 평가되었고, 랜드마크타워 계획요소로서는 입지, 기능효율성 등이 높게 평가되었다.

Assessing Contractor Competition in Competitive Bidding for Highway Construction Projects Using Network Analysis

  • State highway agencies (SHAs) typically apply a competitive procurement procedure to select contractors for their design-bid-build projects. Since the level of competition affects construction bid prices and project outcomes, the Federal Highway Agency (FHWA) suggests SHAs seek ways to improve competition among contractors continuously. However, they rarely conduct an empirical assessment of the current competition level necessary to identify room for improvement. Besides the number of bidders on a project, other factors such as winning or losing rates among the contractors in previous projects can also indicate the degree of competition; only a few contractors may have won the majority of the projects in a specific region. However, few studies have investigated such factors. This paper proposes a network analysis-based approach to evaluating contractor competition levels of highway projects using historical bid tabulation data. The proposed method provides insights into overall competition levels, the determination of competitive contractors, and winning rate distribution among contractors.

  • In an information-oriented and internalized society of the future, the quality and price of goods made by each country will be equalized. That eliminates competition. But the design and appearance of products is an important factor in international competition. Indeed, design symbolizes a country's culture visually, and it can show the cultural identity and originality of a nation in international society. And that will play an important part that can contribute to creating added value. It is necessary to revive our people's old lyrical stories which are far away from our memory, and we badly need design development to revive traditional cultural merchandise through visual modernization. Among various Korean cultural inheritances, lotus is often seen in tiles, porcelains and folk stories. In this study, I chose lotus as the subject material of textile design development, and my intention for this study is to reflect Korean traditional cultural value as much as I can, and to develop textile design of Korean images by adding modern scenes. For that, first I researched lotus pattern materials and examples of cultural merchandise.

공모전 수상작 분석을 통한 모션 인포그래픽 디자인 트렌드 연구 (Motion Infographics Design Trend Analysis of Competition Award-winning Works)

  • 이 연구는 국내외 모션 인포그래픽 공모전 수상작을 대상으로 디자인 트렌드를 분석한 것이다. 정보디자인 측면에서 모션 인포그래픽 디자인 과정을 정보 구조화, 정보 시각화로 나누고 각 단계에서 고려되어야할 디자인 요소들을 추출하여 각 기준에 맞추어 작품들을 분석하였다. 분석결과 국내외 작품에서 함께 나타난 공통점들은 모션 인포그래픽이란 매체를 통한 커뮤니케이션이 어떤 방식으로 이루어지며 그 방식들의 효용성에 대해 이해할 수 있는 시사점을 주었다. 동시에 차이점을 통해서는 국내외의 모션 인포그래픽에 대한 인식의 차이점을 확인할 수 있었으며 국내 모션 인포그래픽의 다양성 부재, 표현의 획일화 등을 읽어낼 수 있었다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 모션 인포그래픽을 제작하는 실무와 교육 분야에서 디자인 전략 수립의 틀로 그 유용성을 제공할 것으로 본다.

And my intention for this study is to reflect Korean traditional cultural value as much as I can, and to develop textile design of Korean images by adding modern scenes. Also, I intend to print them on fabric, and apply them to cultural merchandise including scarves and ties, by using digital textile printing systems. The reasons for doing so, are to create high added value, and to let other peoples of the world, know about our excellent culture.
