This paper investigates the shear properties of crumb rubber-bottom ash mixture reinforced by waste fishing net (WFN). Mixtures used in this experiment consist of crumb rubber and bottom ash (2mm~10mm) with the same weight ratio. In this study several series of direct shear tests were carried out on the five different specimens : unreinforced mixture, reinforced mixtures with 1 or 2 single-layered WFN, reinforced mixtures with 1 or 2 double-layered WFN. The experimental results indicated that the shear properties of reinforced crumb rubber-bottom ash mixture were strongly influenced by reinforcing layer of WFN. It was found that the shear strength and internal friction angle of the mixtures increased with an increase in reinforcing layer of WFN due to interlocking effect and friction between mixture and WFN.

Numerous studies have been performed on the behavior of pile foundations in cold regions. This study first attempted to employ artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict pile-bearing capacity focusing on pile data recorded primarily on cold regions. As the ANN technique has disadvantages such as finding global minima or slower convergence rates, this study in the second phase deals with the development of an ANN-based predictive model improved with an Elephant herding optimizer (EHO), Dragonfly Algorithm (DA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Evolution Strategy (ES) methods for predicting the piles' bearing capacity. The network inputs included the pile geometrical features, pile area (m2), pile length (m), internal friction angle along the pile body and pile tip (Ø°), and effective vertical stress. The MLP model pile's output was the ultimate bearing capacity. A sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the optimum parameters to select the best predictive model. A trial-and-error technique was also used to find the optimum network architecture and the number of hidden nodes. According to the results, there is a good consistency between the pile-bearing DA-MLP-predicted capacities and the measured bearing capacities. Based on the R2 and determination coefficient as 0.90364 and 0.8643 for testing and training datasets, respectively, it is suggested that the DA-MLP model can be effectively implemented with higher reliability, efficiency, and practicability to predict the bearing capacity of piles.

Soils with various particle sizes generally show good shear strength. Some soils have a relatively strong resistance to shear failure in spite of narrow particle distribution, such as gap grading. Based on this example, it can be inferred that appropriate arrangements of particle size in soils might result in an increase in shear strength. This study investigates the strength variation of soils with respect to the particle size distribution. Gap, well, and uniform graded soils were prepared with a desired ratio, and a wide range of direct shear tests were done using the prepared samples. The test results show that there is a strong relationship between the particle size ratio and internal frictional angle. Gap graded soil has a greater frictional angle than a well-graded sample, even when specimens have the same maximum particle size, which is also the case for the uniform grade specimen. The results have potential for developing a methodology for stronger soils through a simple manipulation of particle size distribution.

This study was performed to design and construct a digital soil shear stress sensor in order to replace the conventional devices for measuring soil shear property. The developed digital shear stress measuring device can store measured data with GPS position information as a vector format into a computer. Based on the experiments at various field conditions, the measuring characteristic of the device was quite similar to that of a conventional device, SR-2 that has been a major tool to measure the soil shear property. It was concluded that the digital shear stress measuring device was an effective and comprehensive sensor for measuring soil shear property.

We have carried out numerical compression experiments to estimate the mechanical properties (Mohr-Coulomb and elastic) of corestone-bearing saprolites in Beolgyo area. The studied saprolite, consisting of mechanically much stronger corestone and weaker matrix, is a weathering product of the Precambrian granitic gneiss in the Youngnam massif. Since the saprolite consists of larger corestones with diameter up to 2m, it is impossible to directly measure the mechanical properties by physical experiments. We have measured the mechanical properties of corestone and matrix from naturally occurring saprolite and have used them as a reference for our numerical model. Then, we mixed each material and carried out biaxial compression tests while varying the volume percentage of corestones from 0 to 57%. We found that both cohesion and internal friction angle increase with the volume percentage of corestones while elastic modulus remains constant. We found the results from numerical experiments are in contradiction to what is known from physical experiments using artificial saprolites. This may be due to a possibility that the sharp and discrete nature of interface between corestone and matrix in physical experiments differs from the gradual interfacial nature in numerical modelling and natural saprolites.

The bearing methods using pile of steel itself or reinforced concrete has been applying which in excavated depth was not deep. Also, the retaining wall as resisting structure to lateral force has taken weakness that the cure periods of concreted is long. Recently, with the material cost of steel, the application of cement is more increasing trend. In this study, the design methods of earth retaining and retention wall within the pre-casted concrete pile, PHC(Pretentioned spun High strength Concrete piles), was proposed which in the ground condition of excavated depth was not deep. The typical ground conditions, cohesive and non-cohesive soil, was considered as follows; soil strength as internal friction angle and UU(Undrained Unconsolidation triaxial test) strength, soil reaction and stabilization of structures. The application of design methods could be confirmed through the comparing and analyzing between measured data and utility software for the design.
This study investigated the shear strength characteristics of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil (WTLS), which were developed to recycle dredged soil, bottom ash, and waste tires. The WTLS used in this experiment consisted of dredged soil, bottom ash, waste tire powder, and cement. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals and bottom ash contents of 0% or 100% by the weight of the dry dredged soil. In this study several series of direct shear tests were carried out, which indicated that the shear properties of WTLS were strongly influenced by the mixing conditions, such as the waste tire powder content and bottom ash content. The unit weight, as well as the shear strength of the WTLS, decreased with an increase in waste tire powder content. The shear strength of WTLS with bottom ash was 1.34 times greater than that of WTLS without bottom ash. An average increase in cohesion of 30 kPa was obtained in WTLS with the inclusion of bottom ash due to the bond strength induced from the pozzolanic reaction of the bottom ash. In this test, the maximum value of the internal friction angle was obtained with a 25% content of waste tire powder.

The purpose of this study is to present the application of WFS co-mixtures for retaining wall as flowable backfill. The fly ash, generated at the Tae-An thermoelectric power plant, was used in this research and was classified as Class F. Green Sand, Furane Sand, and Coated Sand, which had been used at a foundry located in Pusan, were used. Couple of laboratory tests and small scale retaining wall tests were performed to obtain the physical properties of the WFS co-mixtures and the possibility of backfill materials of retaining wall. The range of permeability for all the co-mixtures was from 3.0${\times}$10$\^$-3/ cm/s to 6.0${\times}$10$\^$-5/ cm/s. The unconfined strength of the 28-day cured specimens reached around 550kPa. Results of the consolidated-undrained triaxial test showed that the internal friction angle is between 33.5$^{\circ}$ and 41.8$^{\circ}$. The lateral earth pressure against wall decreased up to 80% of initial pressure within a 12 hours and the total lateral earth pressure is less than that of typical granular soil. It was enough to construct the backfill for the standard retaining of 6m with just two steps, like fill the co-mixtures for half of retaining wall, and then fill the others after 1 day. The stability of retaining wall for overturning and sliding increased as the curing time elapsed.
It is very important to determine the coefficient of earth pressure at rest accurately in order to estimate the behavior of soil structure. For estimation of K/sub 0/-value depending upon the stress history of dry sand, a new type of K/sub 0/-oedeometer apparatus is devised, and the horizontal earth pressure is accurately measured. For this study, 2 types of one-cyclic K/sub 0/-Loading/unloading models have been studied experimentally using four relative densities of the sand. The results obtained in this test are as follows : K/sub on'/ the coefficient of earth pressure at - rest for virgin loading is a function of the angle of internal friction Φ' of the sand and is determined as K/sub on/=1 - 0.914 sin Φ', K/sub ou'/ the coefficient of earth pressure at rest for virgin unloading is a function of K/sub on/ and over consolidation ratio(OCR), and is determined as K/sub ou/=K/sub on/(OCR)K/sup a/. The exponent α, increases as the relative density increases. K/sub or'/ the coefficient of earth pressure at rest for virgin reloading decreases in hyperbola type as the vertical stress, σ/sub v/’, increases. And, the stress path at virgin reloading leads to the maximum prestress point, independent upon the value of the minimum unloading stress. The gradient of this curve, m/sub r/ increases as OCR increases.
This study investigated the shear and CBR characteristics of dredge soil-bottom ash-waste tire powder-mixed lightweight soil, which was developed to recycle dredged soil, bottom ash, and waste tire powder. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0 to 100% at 50% intervals by the weight of the dry dredged soil. Several series of triaxial compression tests and CBR tests were conducted. The shear strength characteristics of the lightweight soil were compared using two different shear tests (triaxial compression test and direct shear test). The experimental results indicated that the internal friction angle of the lightweight soil obtained by the direct shear tests was greater than that by the triaxial shear tests. However, the cohesion value obtained by the triaxial shear tests was greater than that by the direct shear tests. The CBR value of the lightweight soil decreased from 35% to 15% as waste tire powder content increased.
