  • Computational fluid dynamics was used to develop a heat-recovery ventilator for preventing freezing in cold weather. An optimal internal return damper was applied, and a prototype was made for frost and freezing experiments. A total of 16 models were used to design the optimal internal return damper with the maximum exhaust recirculation ratio. The exhaust recirculation ratio of the exhaust air to the outdoor air was 59.9-62.3%. The tests showed that frost and freezing did not occur at outdoor air temperatures of $-15^{\circ}C$ or higher in both exhaust recirculation operation and normal operation. However, at an outdoor air temperature of $-20^{\circ}C$, no freezing occurred in the outdoor air area when the internal return damper was opened by 45 degrees. Heat recovery ventilators for preventing cold weather frost and freezing should be operated in two operation modes: normal and exhaust recirculation mode. An operating algorithm was developed for the heat-recovery ventilator operating in normal mode when the outdoor temperature is higher than $-15^{\circ}C$ and recirculation mode when the temperature is lower.

  • Banyan network has been widely employed as a basic building block for ATM switches. But the banyan network has very low routing capacity because of the internal blocking problem. Hence, a dilated banyan network has been used as one solution that can overcome the internal blocking problem. However, tremendous network capacity is wasted in the dilated network In this paper, we propose a dilated banyan network with deflection routing and recirculation mechanism to fully utilize the wasted capacity. The performance of the proposed switch is analysed under uniform traffic assumption. Numerical and simulation results show that the proposed switch yields a significant improvement of the maximum throughput as compared that of the pure dilated banyan network.

  • This is a study about one of the most widely used hydro machinery all over the world - pump-turbine. The system has an impeller which pumps water to an upper reservoir during the night and the same impeller acts as a runner for turbine mode during the day for providing stable electrical power to the grid. The internal flow analysis is investigated in this study to help understand how the water passes through the passage of the vanes and blades, providing the designer with useful information on the behavior of recirculation flows which could reduce the efficiency of the pump-turbine. The 100 kW pump-turbine model has H = 32 m, $Q=0.336m^3/s$ and $N=1200min^{-1}$. For this study there are 7 blades, 19 stay vanes and 20 guide vanes. From this study, it was observed that this pump-turbine design showed very good internal flow characteristics with no flow separation and no recirculation flows in normal operation mode.

  • This study is aimed to develop a new type of micro cross-flow hydro turbine which has very simple structure and relatively high efficiency. Micro eco cross-flow hydro turbine (ECFT) is proposed to apply in the ranges of very low and middle specific speeds in order to extend the operational range of the turbine. In order to not only obtain a basic data for a new design method of ECFT but also improve the turbine efficiency, experiments and CFD analysis on the performance and internal flow characteristics of the turbine model are conducted. According to the present study results, anti-recirculation block (ARB) and relatively wide turbine width with high flow rate improve the turbine efficiency.

  • Regenerative burner is a product of new combustion technology for realizing higher thermal efficiency and lower emissions, moreover utilizing very high preheated air temperature up to $1,000^{\circ}C$. In this study the experimental study was carried out to find out a combustion characteristics breaking the old combustion concept. From the variation of configuration of gas nozzle and hot test on the temperature distribution and NOx, CO, it was found out that the performance of regenerative burner was better than that of existing burner, mainly due to the effect of internal gas recirculation.

  • It's well known that with the increase of preheated air temperature NOx is increasing ,while the energy consumption is decreasing. In this study the experimental study was carried out to find out a new method breaking the above-mentioned old concept. From the variation of configuration of gas nozzle and hot test on the temperature distribution and NOx, it was found out that the reduction of NOx was due to the effect of internal gas recirculation, which will be caused by air emitting velocity from burner nozzle.

  • Internal engine is the main power source of vehicle and is the main source of air pollution. To satisfy this getting rigorous emission regulation, it must be solved simultaneously the dilemma of reducing emission gas and increasing heat efficiency. Diesel engine is preferred compare with gasoline engine in aspect of energy consumption but it must be solved reducing the containing of NOx, CO and HC. In this study: 1. Looking for alternative of performance improvement of Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) which is emission gas reduction system. 2. Reducing malfunction of controlling emission gas. 3. Made possible precision control.

  • This study is to analyze turbulent flow over a backward-facing step in a rectangular duct. The side wall effects on the internal flow were determined by varying the aspect ratio(defined as the step span-to-height ratio) from 1 to 20. In the flow behind a backward-facing step, separation, recirculation and redeveloping is occurred frequently. These phenomena appear in a particular variation by varying the aspect ratio. The results show that the aspect ratio has an influence on the velocity and reattachment length. When the AR is increased, the reattachment length is increased. For 6 over aspect ration, the rate of increase is decreased. The length of recirculation in the upper corner is increased, as the increase of aspect ration. It's width is not changed in the variation of aspect ration. The transverse, streamwise and spanwise velocities were decreased along the flow down stream of the step.

  • Intake/exhaust valve timing and exhaust cam lift were changed to control the internal exhaust gas recirculation (IEGR) and combustion phase of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. To measure the IEGR rate, in-cylinder gas was sampled during from intake valve close to before ignition start. The lower exhaust cam made shorter valve event than higher exhaust cam and made IEGR increase because of trapping the exhaust gas. IEGR rate was more affected by exhaust valve timing than intake valve timing and increased as exhaust valve timing advanced. In-cylinder pressure was increased near top dead center due to early close of exhaust valve. Ignition timing was more affected by intake valve timing than exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve lift 8.4 mm, while ignition timing was affected by both intake and exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve 2.5 mm. Burn duration with exhaust valve lift 2.5 mm was longer than other case due to higher IEGR rate. The fuel conversion efficiency with higher exhaust valve lift was higher than that with lower exhaust valve lift. The late exhaust and intake maximum open point (MOP) made the fuel conversion efficiency improve.

  • The domestic standards which used the standards of Road Association of Japan standards presents the distances of between jet-fans by the caliber of jet-fan. However, the Permanent International Association of Road Congress (PIARC) encourages it to be ten times a diameter of the tunnel. The distance of jet-fans installed in bases of two standards differs as much as two times, as so the proper basis after analysis of internal air current is needed since such difference can lead to disadvantage for selection of ventilation configuration. Based on Froude modeling theory, 1/40 scale acrylic model of a tunnel (215mm in diameter and 6.9m in length) and jet-fan (26.3mm and 31.6mm in caliber) was made for the measurement of changes in pressure and velocity due to the extension of tunnel for analysis of internal air current. And we measured the changes in pressure of surroundings of a jet-fan for confirmation of recirculation due to the exterior airs when the jet-fan is on. The results of the model test show that internal air current was not influenced by the caliber of jet-fan and its changes in pressure and velocity were stable in the point where it was nine times of diameter of the tunnel. Also the recirculation when the jet-fan is on could be verified. According to such results, in the cases of installing jet-fan in tunnels, the distances between jet-fans needs to be more than nine times the diameter.
