  • The effects of mixing vanes (MVs) attached to a grid spacer on the characteristics of air-water annular flows were experimentally investigated. To know the effects, a grid spacer with or without MV was inserted in a vertical circular pipe of 16-mm internal diameter. For three cases (i.e., no spacer, spacer without MV, and spacer with MV), the liquid film thickness, liquid entrainment fraction, and deposition rate were measured by the constant current method, single liquid film extraction method, and double liquid film extraction method, respectively. The MVs significantly promote the re-deposition of liquid droplets in the gas core flow into the liquid film on the channel walls. The deposition mass transfer coefficient is three times higher for the spacer with MV than for the spacer without MV, even for cases 0.3-m downstream from the spacer. The liquid film thickness becomes thicker upstream and downstream for the spacer with MV, compared with the thickness for the spacer without MV and for the case with no spacer.

  • The influences of recess length of a liquid/liquid swirl coaxial injector on spray characteristics were investigated. It was revealed that the internal impinging phenomenon played an important role in the spray characteristics, such as spray angle and breakup length. Also, as the recess length increased, the mean drop size increased due to the increase of effective film thickness and mixing efficiency increased, but in the case of very deep recess length, the mixing efficiency decreased.

  • Combustion performance characteristics of subscale high-pressure combustor were investigated at 70 bar combustion pressure. All tests were successfully performed without any damage on the combustor. The mixing characteristics and distribution pattern of the injectors were found to have considerable influence on the combustion performance. The characteristic velocity of the combustor was higher in the injector with internal mixing than that of external mixing and in the injector with smaller mass flowrate. The pressure fluctuations at the propellant manifolds and the combustion chamber were measured to be less than 3% of the mean combustion pressure to meet the combustion stability criterion and to prove stable combustion characteristics of the combustor.

  • The thermal response of elastomeric insulators used as protection against high-temperature and high-pressure combustion gases varies depending on their composition and thermal environment conditions. In this paper, the thermal response characteristics of elastomeric insulators in different mixing environments were compared. Tests to determine thermal protection performance were carried out using a thermal protection rubber evaluation motor(TPREM), combustion gas velocities of 20 m/s and 100 m/s were tested at a chamber pressure of 1,000 psig. The pressure time curve of the chamber, the temperature time curve of the internal materials, the residual thickness and the thermal destruction depth of the test specimens were obtained. The results showed that the thermal protection performance of elastomeric insulators in different mixing environments was similar.

  • A parametric study of the thermal effects of a half-circumferential grooved journal bearings under aligned and misaligned conditions has been carried out by solving numerically the coupled Reynolds and energy equation system. Five different sets of boundary conditions for the energy equation have been used which include mixing between recirculating oil and inlet oil and a contraction ratio for the cavitation region. The effects of changes of the inlet oil temperature and pressure, the wall temperature and the L/D ratio have also been examined. For the range of parameters found in internal combustion engines, the mixing effectiveness at the groove and the resulting final mixture temperature have been found to be as important as the wall temperature and the heat transfer rate. The variability of the temperature, though, has been shown to smooth out the peaks of both pressure and friction during misaligned condition Distributions of friction and pressure in the oil are also examined which may be useful in attempts to reduce friction without reducing load. Results for an axial grooved bearing are also presentsed for comparision purpose.

  • Rotary kiln produces lime from limestone through thermal decomposition. Ring formation in kiln internal wall is known issue that decreases productivity. The cause of ring formation is temperature imbalance as flame leans toward upper wall. Therefore, burner nozzle geometry was changed to improve air-fuel mixing state which leads to prevention of ring formation. CFD simulation and experimental test were performed in this study to investigate the effect of air-fuel mixing on flame structure, temperature and $NO_X$ concentration. It is shown that combustion efficiency has been enhanced and $NO_X$ concentration has been decreased by using swirl flow for secondary combustion air. It's also shown that flame has been straightened by using straight flow for secondary combustion air.

  • Magnetic properties of nanostructured materials are affected in complicated manner by their microstructure such as pain size (or particle size), internal strain and crystal structure. Thus, studies on the synthesis of nanostructured materials with controlled microstructure are necessary fur a significant improvement in magnetic properties. In the present work, nanostructured Fe-Co alloy powders with a grain size of 50 nm were successfully fabricated from the powder mixtures of (99.9% purity) $FeCl_2$ and $CoCl_2$ by chemical solution mixing and hydrogen reduction.

  • An experimental study of the development of carbon black dispersion by an internal mixer and its characterization is presented. We describe the measurement of carbon black agglomerate size and related characteristics using four different experimental techniques : optical microscopy, scanning elctrion microscopy, surface roughness, and electrical couductivity. The results from these different experiments are compared uning the same carbon black for a series of six different butadiene-styrene copolymers. The results from the different techniques are cross plotted and are critically discussed. It is found that surface but then sharply deteriorate. At subsequent stages of mixing optical microscopy seemed the most reliable measure.

  • Even though the modulating signal frequency of the light is too high to detect directly, the signal can be extracted by frequency conversion at the same time as the detection by means of the non-linearity of the APD. An analysis is presented for super-high-speed optical demodulation by an APD with electronic mixing. A normalized gain is defined to evaluate the performance of the frequency conversion demodulation. The nonlinear effect of the internal capacitance was included in the small signal circuit analysis. We showed theoretically and experimentally that the normalized gain is dependent on the down converted difference frequency component. In the experiment, the down converted different frequency outputs became larger than the directly detected original signal for the applied local signal of 20㏈m.

  • Behaviors of effulent are observed and discussed with reference to the tide and freshwater discharge in the estuary of Suyoung Bay. The esturine front is located at $0.5{\sim}1.3km$ seaward from of the Suyoung Bridge at the spring tide, and $0.8{\sim}1.0km$ at the neap tide. After the heavy precipitations, the front moved seaward and was located at $1.3{\sim}2.5km$ southeast of the Suyoung Bridge. Internal Froude numbers in the estuarine salinity front are estimated approximately to be 1 both at the spring and neap tide. Entrainment coefficient decreases down stream to the estuarine front, and then increases seaward from the estuarine front due to the tidal mixing.
