  • Combustion instability in solid rocket motors is a long-term open problem since the first rockets were used. Based on the numerous previous studies, it is known that the limit cycle amplitude is one of the key characteristics of the nonlinear combustion instability in solid rocket motors. Flandro's extended energy balance corollary, aims to predict the limit cycle amplitude of complex, nonlinear pressure oscillations for rockets or air-breathing engines, and leads to a precise assessment of nonlinear combustion instability in solid rocket motors. However, based on the comparison with experimental data, it is revealed that the Flandro's method cannot accurately describe such a complex oscillatory pressure. Thus in this work we make modifications of the nonlinear term in the nonlinear wave equations which represents the interaction of different modes. Through this modified method, a numerical simulation of the cylindrical solid rocket has been carried out, and the simulated result consists well with the experimental data. It means that the added coefficient makes the nonlinear wave growth equations describe the experimental data better.

  • In previous work, an approach based on maximizing the efficiency of an internal combustion engine while ignoring the power conversion efficiency of other powertrain components, such as the electric motor and power battery or ultracapacitor, was implemented in the steady-state optimization of an internal combustion engine for hybrid electric vehicles. In this paper, a novel control algorithm was developed and successfully justified as the basis for maximal power conversion efficiency of overall powertrain components. Results indicated that fuel economy improvement by 3.9% compared with the conventional control algorithm under China urban transient-state driving-cycle conditions. In addition, using the view of the novel control algorithm, maximal power generation of the electric motor can be chosen.

  • The structure and combustion characteristics, and the economic feasibility of the circulating fluidized bed combustion(CFBC) boiler using low grade coal were introduced. The economic feasibility is evaluated by comparing a 500 MW CFBC boiler power plant using low grade coal and a pulverized combustion boiler power plant with high grade coal. As the result of the evaluation, the pulverized coal combustion boiler power plant has an internal rate of return of 12.95%, 1,395.9 billion Korean won of net present value, and 6.26 years of payback period. On the other hand, CFBC boiler power plant has an internal rate of return of 13.54%, 1,704.3 billion Korean won of net present value, and 6.02 years payback period. Therefore, the CFBC boiler power plant has better feasibility in all aspects, as 0.59% higher of internal rate of return, 308.4 billion Korean won of higher net present value and 0.24 year of shorter payback period.

  • It is becoming increasingly difficult for engines using conventional fuels and combustion techniques to meet stringent emission norms. The homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) concept is being evaluated on account of its potential to control both smoke and NOx emissions. However, HCCI engines face problems of combustion control. In this work, a single cylinder water-cooled diesel engine was operated in the HCCI mode. Diesel was injected during the suction stroke($0^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ degrees aTDC) using a special injection system in order to prepare a nearly homogeneous charge. The engine was able to develop a BMEP(brake mean effective pressure) in the range of 2.15 to 4.32 bar. Extremely low levels of NOx emissions were observed. Though the engine operation was steady, poor brake thermal efficiency(30% lower) and high HC, CO and smoke were problems. The heat release showed two distinct portions: cool flame followed by the main heat release. The low heat release rates were found to result in poor brake thermal efficiency at light loads. At high brake power outputs, improper combustion phasing was the problem. Fuel deposited on the walls was responsible for increased HC and smoke emissions. On the whole, proper combustion phasing and a need for a well- matched injection system were identified as the important needs.

  • Mild combustion or Flameless oxidation(FLOX) have been considered as one of the most prospective clean-combustion technologies to meet both the targets of high process efficiency and low pollutant emissions. A mild combustor with high air preheating and strong internal exhaust gas recirculation is characterized by relatively low flame temperature, low NOx emissions, no visible flame and no sound. In this study, the Steady Flamelet Approach has been applied to numerically analyze the combustion processes and NOx formation in the mild combustor. The detailed discussion has been made for the basic characteristics of mild combustor, numerical results and limitation of the present combustion modeling.

  • Wastes such as shredder dust of disposed vehicles can be decomposed into low calorific flammable gases by Pyrolysis gasification. A stationary electric Power generation using an internal combustion engine fuelled with the waste-pyrolysis gas is an effective way to ease both waste management and energy saving issues. The waste-pyrolysis gas mainly consists of H$_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $N_2$. The composition and heating value of the gas generated depend on the conversion process and the property of the initial waste. This research analyzed the characteristics of the combustion and the exhaust emissions in a premixed charge spark ignition engine fuelled with several kinds of model gases, which were selected to simulate the pyrolysis-gases of automobile shredder dusts. The influences of the heating value and composition of the fuel were analyzed parametrically. Furthermore, optical analyses of the combustion flame were made to study the influence of the fuel's inert gas on the flame propagation.

  • In order to examine the effect of initial spray condition on the spray combustion mode and flame characteristics, theoretical analysis was carried out to predict combustion mode and flame structure for various initial distribution of droplets in spray. A system of conservation equations of spray flame in two dimensional axisymmetric for two phase flow was solved by a discrete element method for n-Butylbenzen (C$_{10}$ $H_{14}$). As a results of present study, there are two principal group combustion modes that may occur independently for various initial group combustion numbers in a spray burner. These group combustion modes are termed as an external and internal group combustion mode. The critical group combustion number between the internal and external group combustion mode and the flame characteristics of those flame are also predicted. These results may be used as a basic data in the designing of new combustors as well as proper operating conditions for spray burners.s.

  • The present study is the analyses of what has been attempted and what was understood in terms of improving the regression rate and enlarging the basic understanding of internal flow dynamics. The first part is mainly intended to assess the role of helical grain configuration in the regression rate inside the hybrid rocket motor. To improve the regression rate, a combination of swirl (which is an active method) and helical grain (which is a passive method) was adopted. The second part is devoted to the internal flow dynamics of hybrid rocket combustion. A large eddy simulation was also performed with an objective of understanding the origin of isolated surface roughness patterns seen in several recent experiments. Several turbulent statistics and correlations indicate that the wall injection drastically changes the characteristics of the near-wall turbulence. Contours of instantaneous streamwise velocity in the plane close to the wall clearly show that the structural feature has been significantly altered by the application of wall injection, which is reminiscent of the isolated roughness patterns found in several experiments.

  • Under the background of combustion instability in solid rocket motor, to study the relationship between pressure oscillations and dynamic process of propellant flames, it is necessary to simulate an oscillation environment with certain frequency, amplitude and duration. This paper presents an experimental installation of pressure oscillation based on pulse-driving technique, with which pressure oscillations features under different pulse-driving conditions were compared and analyzed. For the pulse-driver applied in this paper, a pressure oscillation with 0.15s-0.5s duration, 179Hz-210Hz first order frequency, 0.04MPa-0.35MPa amplitude is simulated. The test results show that an oscillation with higher frequency and lager amplitude can be obtained when pulse-driver is installed on the top of the installation cavity, while on the side, an oscillation with a longer duration and approximate cavity natural frequency can be simulated.
