This paper analyzes multiple active management (AM) techniques of active distribution network (ADN), and proposes an optimal coordination model of intermittent distributed generation (IDG) accommodation considering the timing characteristic of load and IDG. The objective of the model is to maximize the daily amount of IDG accommodation under the uncertainties of IDG and load. Various active management techniques such as IDG curtailment, on-load tap changer (OLTC) tap adjusting, voltage regulator (VR) tap adjusting, shunt capacitors compensation and so on are fully considered. Genetic algorithm and Primal-Dual Interior Point Method (PDIPM) is used for the model solving. Point estimate method is used to simulate the uncertainties. Different scenarios are selected for the IDG accommodation capability investigation under different active management schemes. Finally a modified IEEE 123 case is used to testify the proposed accommodation model, the results show that the active management can largely increase the IDG accommodation and penetration.
The liberalization of electricity market and environmental concerns are the major driving forces for the development of Distributed Generation (DG). The mode of grid-connected wind power generation is becoming popular and has matured as a reliable DG technology. The voltage generated by the wind generator is stepped up to the higher voltage by the transformers before connecting to the grid. Operating algorithm of the differential relays for transformer protection used in the wind farms need to be modified to take care of the dynamic nature of fault current caused by the intermittent nature of the wind power. An algorithm for the differential relay is proposed in which dual slope characteristics are adjusted with varying fault level situation according to the wind generator in service as well as with the wind speed. A case study conducted for a typical wind farm shows that the proposed method avoids mal-operation of the differential relay in varying wind power conditions.

Robust optimal operation of a microgrid is required since the increase of the penetration level of renewable generators in the microgrid raises uncertainty due to their intermittent power output. In this paper, an application of probabilistic optimization method to economical operation of a microgrid is studied. To simplify the treatment of the uncertainties of renewable generations and load, the new 'band of virtual equivalent load variation' is introduced considering their uncertainties. A simplified robust optimization methodology to generate the scenarios within the band of virtual equivalent load variation and to obtain the optimal solution for the worst scenario is presented based on Monte Carlo method. The microgrid to be studied here is composed of distributed generation system(DGs), battery systems and loads. The distributed generation systems include combined heat and power(CHP) and small generators such as diesel generators and the renewable energy generators such as photovoltaic(PV) systems and wind power systems. The modeling of the objective function for considering interruption cost by the penalty function is presented. Through the case study for a microgrid with uncertainties, the validity of proposed robust optimization methodology is evaluated.
Owing to the intermittent power generation of renewable energy sources (RESs), future wireless cellular networks are required to reliably aggregate power from retailers. In this paper, we propose a distributed power allocation (DPA) scheme for base stations (BSs) powered by retailers with heterogeneous RESs in order to deal with the unreliable power supply (UPS) problem. The goal of the proposed DPA scheme is to maximize our well-defined utility, which consists of power satisfaction and unit power costs including added costs as a non-subscriber, based on linear and quadratic cost models. To determine the optimal amount of DPA, we apply dual decomposition, which separates the master problem into sub-problems. Optimal power allocation from each retailer can be obtained by iteratively coordinating between the BSs and retailers. Finally, through a mathematical analysis, we show that the proposed DPA can overcome the UPS for BSs powered from heterogeneous RESs.
When renewable sources are connected to the distribution network in the form of a distributed generators(DGs), the effect of intermittent output appears as voltage fluctuation. The surplus power at the consumer ends results in the reverse power flow to the distribution network. This reverse power flow causes several problems to the distribution network such as overvoltage. Application of the reactive power control equipment and power flow control by means of BTB inverter have been suggested as the general solutions to overcome the overvoltage, but they are not economically feasible since they require high cost devices. Herein, we suggest the feeder loop line switch control method to solve the problem.
Purpose The recent concern over environmental problems such as greenhouse gas emission and fine dust contributes increasing interest in renewable energies. However the intrinsic characteristics of renewable energies, intermittent and stochastic generation, might cause serious problems to the stability and controllability of power grid. Therefore countermeasures such as virtual power plant (VPP) must be prepared in advance of the spread of uncontrollable distributed renewable energy resources to be one of major energy sources. Design/methodology/approach This study deals with the design concept of the VPP platform. we proposed as a technology solution for achieving the stability of power grid by guaranteeing a single power profile combining multiple distributed power sources with ICT. The core characteristics of VPP should be able to participate in the grid operation by responding to operation instructions from the system operator, KPX, as well as the wholesale electricity market. Findings Therefore this study includes energy storage device(ESS) as a controllable component as well as renewable energy resources such as photovoltaic and wind power generation. Based on this configuration, we discussed core element technologies of VPP and protype design of VPP solution platform according to system requirements. In the proposed solution platform, UX design for the integrated control center and brokerage system were included as well as ancillary service function to respond to KPX's operation instruction with utilizing the capability of ESS. In addition, a simulator was suggested to verify the VPP operations.

In the face of global warming and resource depletion, a smart grid has been suggested as one way of contributing to abating the environment problems and increasing energy efficiency. Smart grids utilize renewable energy which has intermittent and irregular output power depending on weather conditions. In order to maintain stability and reliability of the power system, smart grids need to have complementary measures for the possible unstable system conditions. Cogenerating systems such as Combined Heat and Power(CHP) can be one good solution as it has capability of instantly increasing or decreasing output power. Therefore, this paper investigates the connectivity between Combined Heat and Power systems and smart grid technologies. The smart grid national roadmap formulated by South Korea Ministry of Knowledge and Economy and 'IEC Smart Grid Standardization Roadmap' are analyzed to extract related components of the smart grid for the CHP connection. Also, case studies on demonstration projects for smart grids with CHP systems completed or currently being implementing in the world are presented.

Global environmental concerns and the ever increasing need of energy, coupled with steady progress in renewable energy technologies, are opening up new opportunities for utilization of renewable energy resources. Distributed electricity generation is a suitable option for sustainable development thanks to the load management benefits and the opportunity to provide electricity to remote areas. Solar energy being easy to harness, non-polluting and never ending is one of the best renewable energy sources for electricity generation in present and future time. Due to the random and intermittent nature of solar source, PV plants require the adoption of an energy storage and management system to compensate fluctuations and to meet the energy demand during night hours. This paper presents an efficient, economic and technical model for the design of a MPPT based grid connected PV with battery storage and management system. This system satisfies the energy demand through the PV based battery energy storage system. The aim is to present PV-BES system design and management strategy to maximize the system performance and economic profitability. PV-BES (photovoltaic based battery energy storage) system is operated in different modes to verify the system feasibility. In case of excess energy (mode 1), Li-ion batteries are charged using CC-CV mechanism effectively controlled by fuzzy logic based PID control system whereas during the time of insufficient power from PV system (mode 2), batteries are used as backup to compensate the power shortage at load and likewise other modes for different scenarios. This operational mode change in PV-BES system is implemented by State flow chart technique based on SOC, DC bus voltages and solar Irradiance. Performance of the proposed PV-BES system is verified by some simulations study. Simulation results showed that proposed system can overcome the disturbance of external environmental changes, and controls the energy flow in efficient and economical way.
