  • This report deals with the sedimentological study of the littoral sand of beaches in the Busan area. The purpose of this report is to know the grain size, mineralogical composition, heavy mineral and clay mineral of the beach sands, and gravity measurements of the Nagdong River Deltas. 1) As a whole, the littoral sand of the beaches are composed of uniformly medium grained, moderately sorted and nearly symmetrical. The barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary is composed of fine grained, well sorted and nearly symmetrical. 2) The littoral sand of the beaches is transported by saltation and rolling. The barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary is transported by suspension and saltation. 3) In the littoral sand of the beaches, the ratio of feldspar to quartz is 1 :2.31 and in the barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary 1:1.40. 4) The content of heavy mineral of samples ranges from 0.54 to 3.87 %. The principal heavy minerals are hornblende, pyroxene, epidote, garnet, leucoxene, zircon, apatite, magnetite, hematite and ilmenite with minor accessories of rutile and olivine. 5) The x-ray diffraction analysis of the clay mineral informs the existence of quartz, feldspar, kaolinite and montmorillonite. The montmorillonite is considered to have been derived from the alteration of acidic volcanic rocks. 6) To determine the depositional structure of the Nagdong Estuary, Gravity measurements were made. Free air anomaly ranges from 14.5 mgal to 33.5 mgal and Bouguer anomaly ranges from 14.3 to 23.5 mgal and both are closely related to the topography. According to the interpreted layer structure, the upper layer composing sand, silt and clay, the intermediate layer composing sand with gravel, the lower layer composing weathered and soft rock, and bed rock composing hornfels or andesite. 7) The depositional environments of the study, the littoral area is dominated by the marine environment and the Nagdong Estuary by the mixed environment.

  • Effect of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of an Fe-6.5Mn-0.08C medium-manganese steel is investigated in this study. Three kinds of medium-manganese steel specimens are fabricated by varying heat treatments of intermediate quenching (IQ), step quenching (SQ), and intercritical annealing (IA). Hardness and tensile tests are performed to examine the correlation of microstructure and mechanical properties for the Fe-6.5Mn-0.08C medium-manganese steel specimens. The IQ and SQ specimens have microstructures of martensite matrix with ferrite, whereas IA specimen exhibits microstructure of acicular ferrite matrix with martensite. The tensile test results show that the SQ specimen with martensite matrix has the highest yield strength and the lowest elongation. On the other hand, the SQ specimen has the highest hardness due to the relatively lower reduction of carbon content in martensite during intercritical annealing. According to the fractography of tensile tested specimens, the SQ specimen exhibits a dimple and quasi-cleavage fracture appearance while the IQ and IA specimens have fully ductile fracture appearance with fine-sized dimples caused by microvoid coalescence at ferrite and martensite interface.

  • Polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride(PIBSA), an intermediate for the lubricating oil additive, was prepared by the reaction of polyisobutylene(PIB) with maleic anhydride (MA). The functionality, which indicates the extent of reaction of PIB-a and MA, was determined in the various reaction conditions : fuctionality was 0.98 under the reaction conditions of no solvent for 12 hours at $190^{\circ}C$, 0.21 in benzyl alcohol solvent for 12 hours at $190^{\circ}C$, and 0.03~0.20 with various Lewis acids such as $AlCl_3$, $SnCl_4$, $Et_2AlCl$, and $TiCl_4$. The fuctionality also depended on the structure of PIBs. As ${\alpha}$-olefin content (exo-form) in PIB increased, the fuctionality had a higher value. The structure of PIBSA prepared from PIB and MA was determined with FT IR and $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. Two strong anhydride IR bands at 1782 and $1855cm^{-1}$ were obserbed and two IR bands at 1639 and $897cm^{-1}$ for unsaturated groups of PIB disappeared. The presence of the anhydride was difficult to find by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy because the anhydride protons gave relatively small peaks over a 2.0~3.0 range. Polyisobutenylsccinimide (PIBSI), a lublicating oil additive, was prepared by the reaction of PIBSA with diaminoethane.

  • The morphological, physical, and chemical properties of Sonjeong series derived from acidic crystalline rocks are presented. Also it deals with the genesis and classification of the Songjeong series. Morphologically these soils have brown to dark brown loam A horizons and yellowish red to red clay loam Bt horizons with moderate, medium subangular blocky structure and thin patchy clay cutans on the ped faces. C horizons are very deep, yellowish red to yellowish brown fine sandy loam or sandy loam with original rock structure. Physically distribution of particle size indicates that clay increases with depth up to argillic horizons but below the argillic horizons clay content decrease. The moisture holding capacity is fairly good in Songjeong soils. Chemically soil reaction is strongly to very strongly acid throughout the profile and content of organic matter is less than 1 per cent except A horizons. Cation exchange capacity ranges from 5 to 9 me/100g of soils and base saturation is less than 35 per cent throughout the profile. The natural fertility of Songjeong soils are usually low. It needs lime, organic matter, and heavy application of fertilizer for the crop land. These soils occur temperate and humid climate under coniferous, deciduous, and mixed forest vegetation. Songjeong soils are classified as Red-Yellow Soils. Characteristically Songjeong soils are similar to Red-Yellow Podzolic soils in the United States but lack of A2 horizons and are quite liket Red-Yellow Soils of the Japan. According to new classification system which is 7th approximation of USDA Songjeong soils can be classified as fine loamy, mesic family of Typic Hapludults and in the FAO/UNESCO project World Soil Map as Orthic Acrisols.

  • The similarity in Mesozoic geology between the Antarctic Peninsula and South America indicates the possibility that they had situated along the same tectonics line before the separation of southwestern Gondwanaland. The igneous activity around the Antarctic Peninsula, including the South Shetland islands, can be correlated with the South American Cordillera Orogeny due to the subduction of Farallon/Phoenix plate until late Mesozoic. However igneous activity in Tertiary correlates with the tectonics movement accompanying the formations of Drake passage and Scotian sea. The south Shetland islands form a Jurassic-Quaternary miasmatic island arc on the sialic basement of schist and deformed sedimentary rocks. Forming of the South Shetland Islands arc began during the latest Jurassic or earliest Cretaceous from the southwestern part of the archipelago. The igneous activity migrated northeasterly and continued in most areas until late Tertiary. The entire arc-forming period, between late Jurassic and late tertiary times, was characterized by emplacement and eruption of magmas of intermediate between island-arc tholeiite and calc-alkaline types. However, Quaternary volcanic rocks show strong alkaline affinities which corresponds to the switch from compressional to intra: plate tensional tectonics. The rocks of late Cretaceous to Tertiary, mainly found in King George Island, consist of lava of basalt to andesite and intercalated pyroclastic rocks. Some of the volcanic rocks, which ofter called quartz-pyrite lodes'are severely altered and include much content of calcite, silica and pyrite. The stratographic succession of King George Island can be divided into two formation:Fields formation and Hennequin formation. The Fildes formation crops out at the west side of Admiralty Bay n King George Island, while the Hennequin formation at the east side of the bay. These two formtions are thought to be formed contempiranceously. The Fildes formation consists of altered olivine-basalt and basaltic andestie, whereas the Hennequin formation consists of fine-grained hypersthene-augite-andesite.Both formations interclate pyroclastic rocks.

  • Weathering of biotite shows a biotite-vermiculite-kaolinite sequence at the early stage, but presents biotite-kaolinite sequence without a significant intermediate phase (vermiculite) at the late stage from the weathering profile of the granitic gneiss. Secondary 1:1 phyllosilicates are kaolinite and halloysite which show different weathering textures originated by a different formation mechanism. Kaolinitization began from the edges of biotite and propagated toward the interior of grain along a multilayered front. $10 \AA$ layers of biotite are interleaving with $7\AA$ layers of kaolinite and c-axis of two phases is consistent. Kaolinite pseudomorph of biotite is isovolumetric, compared to the biotite boundary and includes many band-like porosities parallel to the cleavage. Platy kaolinite formed by 1:1 layer fur layer replacement of biotite. Halloysitization proceeded outward from the grain edges which were foliated as fine flakes and bent at the right angle for cleavage Halloysites were extensively fanning out and greatly increased the volume of grain. This indicated that halloysite tubes were formed by epitaxial overgrowth on the surface of biotite with import of Si and Al from the external solution by dissolution of plagioclase. These halloysites have abnormally high Fe content ( ~11%).

  • From the concepts of cellular pathology and of exfoliative cytology, as elucidated by Virchow and Papanicolaou respectively in the late 19th and early 20th century, have evolved the primary methods for the diagnosis of cancer today. From Papanicolaou's concept of exfoliative cytology developed fine needle aspiration biopsy in the early 1960's, this has become a major diagnostic procedure and has contributed to a significant reduction in open biopsies and, therefore, to medical cost-effectiveness immunobiochemical techniques provided us with a supplement to cancer diagnosis in the 1980's. The immunoperoxidase method, using monoclonal antibodies, is applied primarily as an ancillary measure to elucidate the nature of cancers The availability of specific monoclonal antibodies has greatly facilitated the identification of cell products or surface markers. For example, antibodies directed against intermediate filaments have proved to be of value in determining the histogenesis oi poorly differentiated neoplasms. Tumor markers may serve as biochemical indicators of the presence of a neoplasm. They can be detected In plasma and other body fluids. Their concentration can be applied as a diagnostic test, for monitoring the clinical course of known cancer, and as a screening measure to detect certain cancers in a population at risk. Flow cytometry is a useful tool for distinguishing several cell characteristics, such as the immunophenotype of leukemia-lymphoma cells, the DNA content of neoplastic cells, and cell proliferation rate. Molecular biologic techniques provided a giant step for the management of cancer patients encompassing diagnosis, prognostic evaluation, and therapy. Nucleic acid hybridization techniques are utilized as Southern, Northern, and dot blots and in situ hybridization. Molecular biology and its techniques may bring a blight new horizon for understanding cancer biology and in designing therapy on the basis of gene manipulation.

  • "Color" education aimed at cultivating creativeness and expressive techniques in the education of visual art, in the college of art and design, should be balanced with "form" education; nevertheless, the present situation at Korean universities is such that the overall environments of "color" education are far too inferior to those of "form" education. The problem is, among other things, that the curriculum of visual art education is centered around formal education; in addition, color education courses consist mostly of theoretical issues, not experimental, first-hand-experience-oriented activities that are best suited for the characteristics of the language of color as a visual language, thereby making it difficult to expect the efficiency of education.Particularly, it is a serious problem that the courses dealing with color are not offered in a step by step fashion, from the most elementary, to the intermediate, working up to the most advanced level. Another problem is that those people involved in color education seldom have an expertise in their area; furthermore, the educational environment, educational tools, and the content of the texbooks are far from being ideal. Moreover, it is a grim reality that most color theory courses that have been offered end up being a lecture of "general, basic" color theories, ignoring the students' diverse specialization areas. As a way of normalizing color education, rationalizing the curriculum and initiating the professorship exclusively teaching color education have to be introduced, so that we can increase the depth of color education and individualize the contents of color education according to the students' needs. It is believed that the introduction of the "color-education-only" professorship will greatly facilitate our effort to devise an efficient educational method, to determine the scope of individualized color education, and to improve the ovarial educational environment (such as facilities, instruments, and teaching materials) necessary for an in-depth education.ments, and teaching materials) necessary for an in-depth education.

  • Recently, the intensive rainstorm possibly induced by global warming plays a key role on the instability of railway adjacent slopes. The instability of slopes results as covering and loss of railway lines induced by slided soil mass. According to the site investigation on the failed slopes triggered by rainfall, low types of slope failure were observed: shallow, intermediate, gully erosion, and soil-rock interface failures. The observation reveals the different characteristics of slope failure depending on the thickness of soil layer, morphological features of slope, etc. Based upon the observations, flume tests were conducted to analyze the sliding mechanism of each failure. The variables of flume test are soil layer thickness, rainfall intensity, and morphology of slope under the constant condition of the percentage of fine, initial soil moisture content, slope angle and compaction energy. Test results show that shallow failure was mostly observed from the surface of the slope and caused by the soil erosion; in addition, compared to the other types of failure, the occurrence of initial erosion is late, however, the development of erosion is fast. In gully erosion failure, the collected water from the water catchment area helps erosion of the upper soil layer and transfer of residual corestone, which impedes the erosion process once the upper soil layers are eroded and corestone are exposed. The soil-rock interface failure shows the most fast initial erosion process among the failure types. Interestingly, the common feature observed from the different types of failure was the occurrence of the initial deformation near the toe of slopes which implies the existence of surbsurface flow along the downslope direction.
