In this study, we present a new efficient hybrid-mixed composite laminated curved beam element. The present element, which is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle and the first-order shear deformation lamination theory, employs consistent stress parameters corresponding to cubic displacement polynomials with additional nodeless degrees in order to resolve the numerical difficulties due to the spurious constraints. The stress parameters are eliminated and the nodeless degrees are condensed out to obtain the ($6{\times}6$) element stiffness matrix. The present study also incorporates the straightforward prediction of interlaminar stresses from equilibrium equations. Several numerical examples confirm the superior behavior of the present composite laminated curved beam element.

A model is constructed to evaluate the stress intensity factors(SIFs) for composites with an interlaminar crack subjected to as arbitrary crack surface loading. A mixed boundary value problem is formulated by Fourier integral transform method and a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind is derived. The integral equation is solved numerically and the mode I and II SIFs are evaluated for various shear modulus ratios between each layer, crack length to layer thickness, each term of crack surface polynomial loading and the number of layers. The mode I and II SIFs for the E- glass/epoxy composites as well as the hybrid composites are also evaluated.
Honeycomb sandwich composite(HSC) structures have been widely used in aircraft and military industry owing to their light weight and high stiffness. Mechanical properties of honeycomb core materials are needed for accurate analysis of the sandwich composites. In this study. theoretical formula for effective elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of honeycomb core materials was established using an energy method considering the bending, axial and shear deformations of honeycomb core walls. Finite-element analysis results obtained by using commercial FEA code, ABAQUS 6.3 were comparable to the theoretical ones. In addition, we performed tensile test of HSC plates and analyzed deformation behaviors and interlaminar stresses through its FEA simulation. An increased shear stress along the interface between surface and honeycomb core layers was shown to be the main reason for interfacial delamination in HSC plate under tensile loading.

The effects of chemical treatment on Kevlar-29 fibers have been studied in a composite system. The surface characteristics of the Kevlar-29 fibers were characterized by pH, acid-base value and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mechanical interfacial properties of final composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). Also, the impact properties of the composites were investigated in the differentiating studies between initiation and propagation energies, and ductile index (DI) along with maximum farce and total energy. It was found that the chemical treatment with phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$) solution significantly affected the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fibers and resin matrix, resulting in improving the mechanical interfacial strength of the composites. This was probably due to the presence of chemical polar groups on Kevlar surfaces, leading to an increment of interfacial binding force in a composite system.

An investigation was performed to study the matrix cracking and delamination in laminated composite plates due to transverse impact. A model was developed for predicting the initiation of the matrix cracking and the shape and size of impact-induced delamination in laminated composite plates resulting from the ballistic impact. The model consists of a stress analysis and a failure analysis. A transient finite element analysis which was based on the higher-order shear deformation theory was adopted for calculating the stresses inside the laminated composite plates during impact. A failure analysis was used to predict the initial intraply matrix cracking and the shape and size of the interface delamination in the laminates. As a results, a shear matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse interlaminar shear stress occured at the middle layer near the midplane of laminates and a bending matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse inplane stress occured at the bottom layer near the surface of laminates. In a thick laminates, a shear matrix cracking generated first at the middle layer of laminates, but in a thin laminates, a bending matrix cracking generated first at the bottom layer of laminates.
The tailoring optimization technique recently developed by the author for improving structural response and energy absorption of composites is extended to sandwich shells using a previously developed zig-zag shell model with hierarchic representation of displacements. The in-plane variation of the stiffness properties of plies and the through-the thickness variation of the core properties are determined solving the Euler-Lagrange equations of an extremal problem in which the strain energy due to out-of-plane strains and stresses is minimised, while that due to their in-plane counterparts is maximised. In this way, the energy stored by unwanted out-of-plane modes involving weak properties is transferred to acceptable in-plane modes. As shown by the numerical applications, the critical interlaminar stress concentrations at the interfaces with the core are consistently reduced without any bending stiffness loss and the strength to debonding of faces from the core is improved. The structural model was recently developed by the author to accurately describe strain energy and interlaminar stresses from the constitutive equations. It a priori fulfills the displacement and stress contact conditions at the interfaces, considers a second order expansion of Lame's coefficients and a hierarchic representation that adapts to the variation of solutions. Its functional d.o.f. are the traditional mid-plane displacements and the shear rotations, so refinement implies no increase of the number of functional d.o.f. Sandwich shells are represented as multilayered shells made of layers with different thickness and material properties, the core being treated as a thick intermediate layer.
An equivalent single-layer theory (EST) is put forward for analyzing free vibrations of steel-concrete composite beams (SCCB) based on a higher-order beam theory. In the EST, the effect of partial interaction between sub-beams and the transverse shear deformation are taken into account. After using the interlaminar shear force continuity condition and the shear stress free conditions at the top and bottom surface, the displacement function of the EST does not contain the first derivatives of transverse displacement. Therefore, the C0 interpolation functions are just demanded during its finite element implementation. Finally, the EST is validated by comparing the results of two simply-supported steel-concrete composite beams which are tested in laboratory and calculated by ANSYS software. Then, the influencing factors for free vibrations of SCCB are analyzed, such as, different boundary conditions, depth to span ratio, high-order shear terms, and interfacial shear connector stiffness.

The corrosion of steel rebars has been the major cause of the reinforced concrete deterioration. It is FRP rebar that is developed to solve problem of such steel rebar. FRP rebar in concrete structures should be used as a substitute of steel rebars for that cases in which aggressive environment produce high steel corrosion, or lightweight is an important design factor, or transportation cost increase significantly with the weight of the materials. But FRP rebar have only linearly elastic behavior; whereas, steel rebar has linear elastic behavior up to the yield point followed by large plastic deformation and strain hardening. Thus, the current FRP rebars are not suitable concrete reinforcement where a large amount of plastic deformation prior to collapse in required. The main objective of this study was to develop new type of hybrid FRP rebar. The manufacture of the hybrid FRP rebar was achieved pultrusion, braiding and filament winding techniques. Tensile and interlaminar shear test results of hybrid FRP rebar can provide its excellent tensile strength-strain behavior and interlaminar stress-strain behavior.

During manufacturing thick composite cylinders, large thermal residual stresses are developed and induce catastrophic interlaminar failures. Since the residual stresses are dependent on many process parameters, such as temperature distribution during cure, cure shrinkage, winding tension, and migration of fibers, calculation of the residual stresses is very difficult. Therefore a radial-cut method have been used to measure the residual stresses in the composite cylinders. But the conventional radial-cut method needs to know numerous material properties which are not only troublesome to obtain but also vary with change of fiber arrangement during consolidation. In this paper, a new radial-cut method with cut-cylinder-bending test was proposed and the measured residual stresses were compared with calculated thermal residual stresses. It was found that the new radial-cut method which does not need to know any of material properties gave better estimation of residual stresses regardless of radial variation of material properties. Additionally, interlaminar tensile strength could be obtained by the cut-cylinder-bending test.
In this work, the electroplating of copper was introduced on PAN-based carbon fibers for the enhancement of mechanical interfacial strength of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle measurements. Its mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). From the results, it was found that the mechanical interfacial properties of Cu-plated carbon fibers-reinforced composites (Cu-CFRPs) enhanced with increasing the Cu plating time, Cu content and COOH group up to Cu-CFRP-30. However, the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs decreased dramatically in the excessively Cu-plated CFRPs sample. In conclusion, the presence of Cu particles on carbon fiber surfaces can be a key factor to determine the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs, but the excessive Cu content can lead the failure due to the interfacial separation between fibers and matrices in this system.
