  • Nowadays, the crank shaft motor vehicle has become essential as the important component. The machining precision was asked for manufacturing the shaft. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional are welding. Both in-process quailty control and high reliability of the weld are the major concerns in applying friction wlding to the economical and qualified mass-production. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is avaliable at present to determine the real-time evaluation of automatic production quality control for bar-to-bar friction welding of the crank shaft of O.D 24mm for motor vehicle. This paper, so that, presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the tensile strength and other properties of the bar-to-bar welded joints of O.D. 24mm shaft as well as the various welding variables, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop real-time quality monitoring system for friction welding, resulting in practical possiblility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro structural defects.

Interfacial stress assessment at the cracked zones in CFRP retrofitted RC beams

  • In this work, an experimental examination was carried out to study interfacial stresses developed at the junction zones between carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) fabrics (~1 mm thickness) and tensile concrete portion in CFRP retrofitted RC beams. In this respect, initially six similar RC beams of $150{\times}150{\times}1000mm$ dimensions were prepared. Three of which were strengthened with CFRP fabrics at the tensile side of the beams. Furthermore, a notch was cut at the center of the bottom surface for all of the studied beams. The notch was 15 mm deep and ran across the full width of tension side of the beams. The mentioned interfacial stresses could be calculated from strains measured using strain gauges mounted on the interface zone of the tensile concrete and the CFRP sheet. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that interfacial stresses developed between CFRP fabrics and RC beam had a noticeable effect on debonding failure mode of the latter. The load carrying capacity of CFRP strengthened RC specimens increased ~75% compared to that of the control RC beams. This was attributed to the enhancement of flexural mode of the former. Finally, finite element analysis was also utilized to verify the measured experimental results.

  • In Zone Melting Recrystallization(ZMR) of SOl structure, thin silicon films have been recrystallized by artificial control of beam intensity profile which was obtained by tilting of upper elliptical reflector. Temperature profiles and gradients near solidification interface were calculated by numerical simulation for analysis of asymmetric line heating effect. The larger the tilting angle of the upper reflector, the larger the degree of supercooling at liquid and the interdefect spacing in thin silicon films. Major defects were continuous subgrainboundaries. Isolated threading dislocations were observed in the case of the film having low defect density. We have found that the thin silicon films were recrystallized into (100) textured single crystals by cross-sectional TEM and thin film X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • A p-version finite element model based on degenerate shell element is proposed for the analysis of orthotropic laminated plates. In the nonlinear formulation of the model, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with large deflection and moderate rotation being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The material model Is based on the Huber-Mises yield criterion and Prandtl-Reuss flow rule in accordance with the theory of strain hardening yield function, which is generalized for anisotropic materials by introducing the parameters of anisotropy. The model is also based on extension of equivalent-single layer laminate theory(ESL theory) with shear deformation, leading to continuous shear strain at the interface of two layers. The Integrals of Legendre Polynomials we used for shape functions with p-level varying from 1 to 10. Gauss-Lobatto numerical quadrature is used to calculate the stresses at the nodal points instead of Gauss points. The validity of the proposed p-version finite element model is demonstrated through several comparative points of view in terms of ultimate load, convergence characteristics, nonlinear effect, and shape of plastic zone

  • Numerical study of air-blast type injector for low emission aircraft engines was conducted. Volume-of-fluids approach was used to track interface of fuel and air. Primary atomization of fuel stream was visualized, and thickness and mean velocity at the injector exit was calculated. Liquid fuel injected from fuel slots joined together as a thin film on preflimer surface, and interacted with swirling air. As instability on the fuel surface increased, separation of fuel as ligaments and droplets occured. The film thickness and velocity were used to as fuel injection boundary condition for reactive flow simulation. Primary reaction zone was formed in vicinity of the fuel nozzle, creating a stable flame inside the combustor.

  • This paper describes the varying material model, the analysis method and the software development for reinforced concrete circular columns confined by spiral or hoop transverse steel reinforcement and subjected to eccentric loading. The widely used Mander model of concentric loading is adapted here to eccentric loading by developing an auto-adjustable stress-strain curve based on the eccentricity of the axial load or the size of the compression zone to generate more accurate interaction diagrams. The prediction of the ultimate unconfined capacity is straight forward. On the other hand, the prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires specialized nonlinear analysis. This nonlinear procedure is programmed using C-Sharp to build efficient software that can be used for design, analysis, extreme event evaluation and forensic engineering. The software is equipped with an elegant graphics interface that assimilates input data, detail drawings, capacity diagrams and demand point mapping in a single sheet. Options for preliminary design, section and reinforcement selection are seamlessly integrated as well. Improvements to KDOT Bridge Design Manual using this software with reference to AASHTO LRFD are made.

Solidification Microstructures with Carbon Contents and Solidification Rates in Modified 12Cr-lMo Steels (개량 12Cr-1Mo강에서 탄소 함량 및 응고속도에 따른 응고 조직 형성 거동)

  • The influences of solidification rates and carbon contents on the formation of the $\delta$-ferrite were studied by directional solidification in modified 12%Cr-l %Mo steels. Directional solidification experimental results showed that solidification microstructure depended on solidification rate and carbon content and chromium equivalent. The length of the mushy zone increased and the dendrite arm spacings decreased as the solidification rate increased. The volume fraction of the 8-ferrite decreased with increasing the solidification rate and carbon content. The volume fraction of the ferrite showed much higher at low solidification rates with planar and cellular interfaces than that at high solidification rates with dendritic interface. It is expected that macro-segregation of C causes lower C content at the lower solidification fraction in the directionally solidified sample, where lower C results in higher volume fraction of the ferrite. In order to estimate solidification microstructure in modified 12Cr-l%Mo steels, various solidification conditions, such as solidification rate, cooling rate, segregation, alloy composition, should be considered.

  • Soil-bentonite mixture is often used for barrier wall to prevent seawater intrusion. In this study, the effect of seawater on the permeability of soil-bentonite mixture is examined, and the effect of permeability change on the seawater intrusion is investigated. Seawater intrusion in coastal areas was modeled using a finite element method. Seawater intrusion in the seawater-contaminated zone was determined by considering the hydraulic conductivity changes using the residual flow procedure (RFP) in the simulation model. Steady state and unsteady state conditions with variations in ground water levels in an inland area were investigated. The interface between fresh water and seawater, found by the proposed method, was located lower at the seawater side and the level at the fresh water side is higher than those by conventional methods.

  • The shock absorbers for marine vehicles are very important components to absorbing the shock resulting from driving. Depending on the kinds of vehicles, these essential components, piston and piston rod, must be made of S25C, S45C, and SCM440, must be precisely machined, and assembled by the bolts. Other materials used have been difficult to weld, and could be unstable in quality, by the conventional arc welding. Also, they have been associated with a lot of technical problems in manufacturing. However, using the friction welding technique, such problems will be avoided. These factors have necessitated the domestic development of the marine shock absorber using a friction welding, as well as stimulating a new approach to the study of real-time weld quality evaluation by AE techniques.

  • In this paper, remote monitoring system for wind turbine site is developed. This system is a hierarchical reliable monitoring system connected by wireless communication channels between monitoring host computer and modular slave measuring subsystems. The design of this systems; the slave measuring subsystems is placed in meteorological tower and wind turbine, and the supervisory host computer is in the safety zone. The slave measuring subsystems signals are from a meteorological tower, wind turbine generator and tower. For monitoring and command function, the supervisory computer is implemented with a PC using graphic user interface. This system can be transferred the information among host computer and remote computers through the Ethernet. Consequently we can get reliability but economic system. The system has the concept of universality and modularity, so it is simple and easy to implement in wind turbine test sites.
