Dissimilar material friction welding such as STD11 and SCM440, we are considering of such things as strength and tenacity of welding interface, which consist of friction welding rotation frequency, friction heating pressure, upset forging-pressure, friction heating time, and upset forging-pressure time. From the study, obtaining the interrelationship between welding condition and quality(toughness, tenacity), we can set the best range of welding condition. while performing acoustic emission examination for the nondestructive evaluation, we can deduce the interrelationship among total acoustic emission counts, friction welding variable, and quality during friction welding, which can solve the manufacturing difficulty and enhance the economic value.
An experimental study on the effect of silver particles on the sliding behavior of bearing steels was performed by using a ball-on-disk tribometer. Tests were carried out in ambient air, dry and vacuum. Disks of AISI 52100 were silver-coaled by a thermal evaporation method, and the effects of silver particle transfer on friction were firstly analyzed. In order to understand further the mechanism of silver particles transfer and its effect on friction and wear, pre-compressed silver particles were artificially introduced into the friction interface and the results were compared to those of silver-coated specimens. Results showed that the introduced silver particles produced transfer layers and resulted in low friction. It also showed that this low friction is closely related to the characteristic behavior of transfer layers. Shakedown and rachetting occurred at the friction interface and affected the friction and wear.
Friction stir welding(FSW) was studied using commercial tool, FLOW-3D. The purpose of this study is to suggest a method to apply frictional heat in Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Cylindrical tool shape was used, and the interface cells between tool surface and workpiece were tracked by its geometrical relations in order to consider the frictional heat in FSW. After tracking the interface cells, average area concept was used to calculate the frictional heat, which is related to interface area. Also three-dimensional heat source and visco-plastic flow were modeled. The frictional heat generation rate calculated numerically from the suggested algorithm was validated with the analytical solution. The numerical solution was well matched with the analytical solution, and the maximum percentage of error was around 3%.
In this study behavior of fatigue crack and fatigue fracture is observed under rotary bending fatigue testing in friction welded dissimilar materials. Fatigue fracture most occurred in SM15C heat affected zone around Interface. In case of fatigue test, stress is reduced the position of fracture gradually moves to the welded Interface. Micro crack of heat affected zone surface on SM15C is observed at any different stress.
In North America, a large number of concrete old slab-on-steel girder bridges, classified noncomposite, were built without any mechanic connections. The stablizing effect due to slab/girder interface contact and friction on the steel girders was totally neglected in practice. Experimental results indicate that this effect can lead to a significant underestimation of the load-carrying capacity of these bridges. In this paper, the two major components-concrete slab and steel girders, are treat as two deformable bodies in contact. A finite element procedure with considering the effect of friction and contact for the analysis of concrete slab-on-steel girder bridges is presented. The interface friction phenomenon and finite element formulation are described using an updated configuration under large deformations to account for the influence of any possible kinematic motions on the interface boundary conditions. The constitutive model for frictional contact are considered as slip work-dependent to account for the irreversible nature of friction forces and degradation of interface shear resistance. The proposed procedure is further validated by experimental bridge models.
The present study examined the mechanical properties of the friction welding of Ni-Cr-Mo to SM45C. Friction welding was conducted at welding conditions of 2,000 rpm, friction pressure of 100MPa, friction time of 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 seconds, upset pressure of 150MPa, and upset time of 3.0 seconds. When the friction time was 1.6 seconds, the maximum tensile strength of the friction weld happened to be 1,020MPa, which is 120% of the base material's tensile strength(850MPa). At the same condition, the maximum shear strength was 438MPa, which is equivalent to 103% of the base material's shear strength(425MPa). At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv490 at Ni-Cr-Mo nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv40 than condition of the friction time 0.8 seconds, and the maximum vickers hardness was Hv305 from weld interface of SM45C, which is higher Hv12 than condition of the friction time 0.8 seconds. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fined and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.
This study deals with the friction welding of A2024- T6 to A6061- T6; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution of 2000rpm, friction pressure of 50MPa, upset pressure of 100MPa, and upset time of 5.0seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, of friction weld, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time was 1.5seconds under the conditions, the maximum tensile strength of the friction weld happened to be 292MPa, which is $94.2\%$ of the base material's tensile strength(310MPa). At the same condition, the maximum shear strength was 2l2MPa, which is equivalent to $103\%$ of the base material's shear strength (205MPa). 2. At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv 146 at A2024- T6 nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv3 than condition of the friction time 0.5seconds, and the maximum vickers hardness was Hvl20 from weld interface of A6061-T6, which is higher Hv28 then base material's. 3. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fractionized and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.
A copper-tungsten sintered alloy(Cu-W) has been friction-welded to a tough pitch copper (Cu) in order to investigate friction weldability. The tensile strength of the friction welded joint was increased up to 87% of the Cu base metal under the condition of friction time 1.0 see, friction pressure 40MPa and upset pressure 100MPa, upset time 5.0 sec. And it is related to upset pressure rather than friction time. Mixed layer was formed in the Cu adjacent weld interface and W particles which were included in mixed layer could induce fracture in the Cu adjacent to the weld interface. Thickness of mixed layer was reduced as upset pressure increase.
This study deals with the friction welding of SM25C and SCNCrM-2B; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 100MPa, upset pressure of l50MPa, and upset time of 4.0 seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time is 2.0 seconds, the tensile strength of friction welds was 874MPa, which is around as much as 117% of the tensile strength of base metal(SM25C), the bending strength of friction welds was 1,354MPa, which is around as much as 108.9% of the bending strength of base metal(SM25C). 2. At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv443 at SCNCrM-2B nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv20 than condition of the friction time 0.5 seconds. 3. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fractionated and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.
With the recent increase in the demand for the net-shape forming, numerical simulations are being commonly adopted to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of design of bulk metal forming processes. Proper consideration of tribological problems at the contact interface between the tool and workpiece is crucial in such simulations. In other words, lubrication and friction play important roles in metal forming by influencing the metal flow, forming load and die wear. In order to quantitatively estimate such friction condition or lubricant characteristic, the constant shear friction model is widely used for bulk deformation analyses. For this, new friction testing method based on the forward or backward extrusion process is proposed to predict the shear friction factor in this work. In this method, the tube-shaped punch pressurizes the workpiece so that the heights at the center and outer of punch (or mandrel) become different according to the friction condition. That is, the height at the center of punch is higher than that at the outer of the punch when the friction condition at the contact interface is severe. From this founding, the proposed friction testing method can be applied to effectively evaluate the friction condition in bulk metal forming processes.
