  • A new procedure for determining properties of thick plate finite elements, based on the modified Mindlin theory for moderately thick plate, is presented. Bending deflection is used as a potential function for the definition of total (bending and shear) deflection and angles of cross-section rotations. As a result of the introduced interdependence among displacements, the shear locking problem, present and solved in known finite element formulations, is avoided. Natural vibration analysis of rectangular plate, utilizing the proposed four-node quadrilateral finite element, shows higher accuracy than the sophisticated finite elements incorporated in some commercial software. In addition, the relation between thick and thin finite element properties is established, and compared with those in relevant literature.

  • This study empirically investigated the relationships among inter-organizational contextual factors(assets specificity, long-term orientation and interdependence), information exchange between trading partners, inter-organizational loaming and trust, and inter-organizational performance. In this study, types of information exchanged between trading firms are classified into two broad kinds: transaction information and management information. from empirical results, we found that inter-organizational contextual factors have a greater positive impact on the exchange of management information. It is also observed that the exchange of information positively influences inter-organizational trust and loaming. finally, the results of this study showed that inter-organizational trust and teaming have positive effects on the improvement of inter-organizational performance. Thus, it is concluded that the amount of information exchanged according to the conditions of inter-organizational contextual factors gives rise to inter-organizational teaming and high levels of trust, and high levels of trust and learning contribute to the increase of inter-organizational performance.

  • A view of cultural heritage as a form of capital considers the long term, dynamic, evolutionary, inter-temporal and inter-generational aspects of cultural heritage. The principles of sustainability provide a basis on the broader issue of culture in economic development. They might be capable of specifying a pattern of development that is "culturally sustainable" in the same way as somewhat similar set of criteria derived for the natural world, the criteria for defining ecologically and environmentally sustainable development. Thus we might accept the principles of material and non-material advancement, intergenerational and intra-generational equity, the maintenance of cultural diversity, the precautionary principle, and the recognition of system interdependence as benchmarks in assessing a cultural development process.

  • When high-pressure gas is exhausted through nozzle exit to the atmosphere, expanded supersonic jet is formed with the Mach disk at a specific condition. In two-dimensional supersonic jets, the hysteresis phenomenon of the reflected shock waves is found to occur under quasi-steady flow conditions. Transitional pressure ratio between the regular reflection and Mach reflection in the jet is affected by this phenomenon. In the present study, experiments are carried out on internal flow in a supersonic nozzle to clarify the hysteresis phenomena for the shock waves and to discuss its interdependence on the rate of the change of pressure ratio with time. Flow visualization is carried out separately on the straight and divergent channels downstream of the nozzle throat section. The influence that the hysteresis phenomena have on the location of shock wave in a supersonic nozzle is also investigated experimentally.

  • The linear constitutive relations and the failure criteria of composite materials made of thermoviscoelastic solids are presented. The post-failure material behavior is proposed and the dynamic finite element equations are formulated. However, a nonlinear term is kept in the energy equation because it represents the effect of the second law of thermodynamics. A general purpose nonlinear three-dimensional dynamic finite element program COMPASS is upgraded and employed in this work to investigate the interdependence among stress wave propagation, stress concentration, failure progression and temperature elevation in composite materials. The consequence of truthfully incorporating the second law of thermodynamics is clearly observed: it will always cause temperature rise if there exists a dynamic mechanical process.

  • The aim of this research is to analyze and periodize the relationship between railroad and river transportation as one aspect of the transformation of the land transportation system in Korea. As a result, three phases can be observed: a first phase of equality and interdependence (1910s); a second phase, subordinating rivers to feeder lines under railroad's dominance; and a third phase when trucks and buses became a major means for local transportation in place of traditional shipping routes. River ports were among the main planned destinations during the first and second phases, but such plans were changed or withdrawn after the third phase. This relationship between river and rail illustrates one geopolitical factor relating to the development of Korea's rail transportation network.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the equity market crisis contagion in major Asian economic markets. A comparative assessment of Asian markets during the Asian Financial Crisis and Global Financial crisis may clearly identify the changing nature of long term integration of major Asian markets. The selection criteria of specific Asian markets of different peripheries depend particularly on the roles and structure of these markets. The impact of the global financial contagion and the lingering financial linkage in the aftermath of crisis will explain the reaction of the majority of Asian markets to global linkage. While majority of the studies focused on dynamic short term association in European and MENA contagions in the post global financial crisis period; after the global financial crisis, attention paid to long term Asian contagion adds new perspective to hitherto disorganized theories.

  • This paper examines quantile dependence and directional predictability between the foreign exchange market and the stock market in Korea. Instead of adopting a multivariate model such as a vector autoregressive model, a multivariate GARCH model or a combination of both models, we apply the cross-quantilogram recently proposed by Han et al. (2016). Considering various quantile ranges, we investigate various spillover effects between two markets. Our findings show that there exists an asymmetric bi-directional spillover between two markets and the interdependence between two markets implies that one market has significant predictive power on the other.

  • As the features of recent flood are spatially concentrated, loss of life and property increase by the impact of climate change. In addition to this the public interest in water control information is increased and socially reasonable justification of water control policy is needed. It is necessary to estimate the flood risk in order to let people know the status of flood control and establish flood control policy. For accurate flood risk analysis, we should consider inter-relation between causal factors of flood damage. Hence, flood risk analysis should be applied to interdependence of the factors selected. The Bayesian networks are ideally suited to assist decision-making in situations where there is uncertainty in the data and where the variables are highly interlinked. In this research, to provide more proper water control information the flood risk analysis is performed using the Bayesian networks to handle uncertainty and dependency among 13 specific proxy variables.
