  • Propylene Carbonate (PC) has the interesting properties of being able to dissolve and dissociate lithium salts, thus leading to highly conducting electrolytes even at low temperatures. Moreover, electrolytes that contain PC are stable against oxidation at voltages up to ~5 V. However, it is known that, when lithium is intercalated into graphite in pure PC based electrolytes, solvent co-intercalation occurs, leading to the destruction of the graphite structure. (i.e., exfoliation). The objective of this study was to suppress PC decomposition and prevent exfoliation of the graphite anode by co-intercalation. Electrochemical characteristics were studied using Kawasaki mesophase fine carbon (KMFC) in different 1 M $LiPF_6$/PC-based electrolytes. Electrochemical experiments were completed using chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. From the observed results, we conclude that the MA and $Li_2CO_3$ additive suppressed co-intercalation of the PC electrolyte into the graphite anode. The use of additives, for reducing the extent of solvent decomposition before exfoliation of the graphite anode, could therefore enhance the stability of a KMFC electrode.

  • Two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin molybdenum dichalcogenides $MoS_2$ has gained a great deal of attention in energy conversion and storage applications because of its unique morphology and property. The 2D $MoS_2$ nanosheets provide a high specific surface area, 2D charge channel, sub-nanometer thickness, and high conductivity, which lead to high electrochemical performances for energy storage devices. In this paper, an overview of properties and synthetic methods of $MoS_2$ nanosheets for applications of supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries is introduced. Different phases triangle prismatic 2H and metallic octahedral 1T structured $MoS_2$ were characterized using various analytical techniques. Preparation methods were focused on top-down and bottom-up approaches, including mechanical exfoliation, chemical intercalation and exfoliation, liquid phase exfoliation by the direct sonication, electrochemical intercalation exfoliation, microwave-assisted exfoliation, mechanical ball-milling, and hydrothermal synthesis. In addition, recent applications of supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries using $MoS_2$ electrode materials are discussed.

  • This paper reports a novel method for simultaneous exfoliation of graphene and dispersion of carbon nanotube by using intercalation method. In common, graphene flake and carbon nanotubes can be produced through individual exfoliation or debundling process, but the process require significant amount of time. Here, potassium sodium tartrate was thermally intercalated into graphite and carbon nanotube bundle for simultaneous exfoliation and dispersion of graphene and carbon nanotubes. We confirmed expansion of interlayer distance via XRD, and also found that oxidation level of the exfoliated materials were significantly low (below 8.3 at%). The produced materials are fabricated in to conductive composite film via vacuum filtration and spray deposition to show enhancement of conductive properties.

  • The intercalation chemistry of graphite presents an attractive route to obtain few-layered graphene platelets based on the expanded interlayer spacing. We report that the lithium can be intercalated into the graphite in a controllable manner by adjusting the variables such as temperature, pressure, and reaction time. From the X-ray diffraction experiments, the lithium-graphite intercalaltion compounds (Li-GICs) can be produced as the first stage compounds ($LiC_6$), the second-stage compounds ($LiC_{12}$), and the mixtures, which is most likely to be dependent on the temperature and reaction time. Since these Li-GICs are expected to facilitate the exfoliation of graphite, we investigated the feasibility of Li-GICs as a effective precursors for the generation of single-or few-layered graphite nano-platelets.

  • A layered perovskite of Dion-Jacobson phase, $RbLaTa_2O_7$, was successfully exfoliated into colloidal suspension via successive ion-exchange and intercalation reaction. The pristine perovskite $RbLaTa_2O_7$ was synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction, and then, it was ion-exchanged with hydrochloric acid to obtain a protonic form of perovskite. The resulting proton-exchanged perovskite was reacted with ethylamine to increase interlayer spaces for further intercalation reaction. Finally, the ethylamine-intercalated form was exfoliated into nanosheets via an intercalation of bulky organic cations (tetrabutylammonium). According to X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the TBA-intercalated form showed remarkably increased interlayer spacing (${\Delta}d$ = 1.67 nm) in comparison with that of the pristine material. Transmission electron microscopic image of exfoliated perovskite clearly revealed that the present exfoliated perovskite were composed of very thin layers. This exfoliated perovskite nanosheets could be applicable as building blocks for fabricating functional nanocomposites.

  • A new graphite intercalation compound (GIC), n-octylammonium tetrachlorofeffate(Ⅲ)-graphite, has been derived from well-known ferric chloride graphite intercalation compound. X-ray diffration study shows that the basal spacing of this new GIC is 20.8 Å. In order to investigate the local geometry around the iron atom in the graphite layers, X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments were performed. The first discharge capacity of its exfoliated form is found to be 862 mAh/g, which is more than double the value of pristine graphite (384 mAh/g). Such a drastic increase implies that the exfoliated graphite is a promising electrode material.

  • The cure, viscoelastic and mechanical characteristics of organoclay filled NR/BR blends were studied and compared with the properties of carbon black and silica filled NR/BR blends. The nanocomposites with extensive exfoliation state can be fabricated by a solution mixing method. In the composites, the amount of filler content was fixed to 10 phr. Degree of intercalation and exfoliation was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD results indicated exfoliation of the silicate layers into the rubber matrix. While the degree or intercalation and exfoliation is lowered by the conventional mixing method, extensive exfoliation can be obtained by the solution mixing method. It was found that the clay filled NR/BR compound showed better viscoelastic (tan ${\delta}$) and mechanical properties than the carbon black or silica filled NR/BR compounds.

  • The viscosity effect of matrix polymer on melt exfoliation behavior of an organoclay in poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated. The viscosity of matrix polymer was controlled by changing the molecular weight of poly($\varepsilon$-eaprolactone), the processing temperature, and the rotor speed of a mini-molder. Applied shear stress facilitates the diffusion of polymer chains into the gallery of silicate layers by breaking silicate agglomerates down into smaller primary particles. When the viscosity of PCL is lower, silicate agglomerates are not perfectly broken into smaller primary particles. At higher viscosity, all of silicate agglomerates are broken down into primary particles, and finally into smaller nano-scale building blocks. It was also found that the degree of exfoliation of silicate layers is dependent upon not only the viscosity of matrix but thermodynamic variables.

  • This article investigated to polymer-clay nanocomposite, especially in interfacial respect clay structure, its dispersion into polymer matrix, and clay modification is studied. The cationic exchange of surfactants with clay gallery results in preparing organo-clay capable of compatiblizing to monomer or polymer and increasing interlayer adhesion energy due to expansion of interlayer spacing. The orientation of surfactant in clay gallery is affected by chemical structure and charge density of clay, and interlayer spacing and volume is increased with alkyl chain length of surfactant, or charge density of clay. Also, the interaction between clay and polymer in preparing polymer-clay nanocomposite is explained thermodynamically. In the future, the study and development of polymer-clay nanocomposite is paid attention to the interfacial adhesion, clay dispersion within polymer, mechanism of clay intercalation or exfoliation.
