  • Species of the diatom genus Chaetoceros with special intercalary setae are uncommon. For this study, we collected Chaetoceros species from August 2008 to September 2009 in Korean coastal waters and examined the ultra structures of the Chaetoceros species C. coarctatus, C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, C. diversus, and C. messanensis, using light and scanning electron microscopy. C. coarctatus, in the subgenus Phaeoceros, showed longer and stronger spines than those found in other species. C. coarctatus and C. diversus had special intercalary setae with spines in straight arrangements, whereas C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, and C. messanensis had special intercalary setae with spines arranged in spirals. The setae of C. coarctatus had spines that were robust toward the tips and, overall, longer and stronger than were those of other species. C. coarctatus and C. diversus were straight, and C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, and C. messanensis spiraled. C. messanensis had two types of special intercalary setae, both forked: 1 with spines in spirals and 1 lacking spines. We did not find spines on the anterior part of divergent point of the special intercalary setae of C. messanensis. Foramina shapes of these 5 Chaetoceros species varied as follows: very small or no foramina in C. coarctatus, relatively wide and slightly centrally constricted foramina in C. compressus var. hirtisetus and C. contortus, quite narrowly slitted or no foramina in C. diversus, and lanceolate or hexagonal foramina in C. messanensis. We found rimoportula in both intercalary and terminal valves of C. coarctatus, but C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, C. diversus, and C. messanensis only had rimoportula in terminal valves. In addition, C. compressus var. hirtisetus and C. contortus were new to Korean coastal waters.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiologic and clinical outcomes after intercalary tricortical iliac bone graft with plate fixation for the nonunion of midshaft clavicular fractures. Material and Methods: Between September 2007 and May 2011, 10 patients who were treated by the intercalary tricortical iliac bone graft, with plate fixation for clavicle nonunion, were studied. The mean follow-up period was 30.7 (12~57) months. After the sclerotic bone was excised to the bleeding cortical bone, we interposed the tricortical iliac bone to provide structural support and restore clavicle length, and then fixed the plate and screws. The radiologic outcomes on the serial plain radiographs and clinical outcomes, according to UCLA, ASES and Quick DASH scores, were analyzed. Results: Bony union was obtained in all cases (100%) and the average union time was 18.4 (14~24) weeks. The average respective UCLA and ASES scores improved from 16.7 and 52.1 preoperatively to 27.4 and 83.6 postoperatively (p<0.05). The average Quick DASH score was 40.5, at the final follow-up. Complications were 2 shoulder stiffness, and one case had removal of device and arthroscopic surgery at 11 months, postoperatively. There were no implant failure or infection. Conclusion: Intercalary tricortical iliac bone graft, with plate fixation for the nonunion of midshaft clavicular fractures, is a good option that can provide structural support and restore clavicle length, as well as high union rate.

  • Apical and subapical fragments of Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss (Rhodophyta) were cultured on a temperature-light gradient table with four temperature $(15,\;20,\;25\;and\;30^{\circ}C)$ and five light intensity $(20,\;40,\;60,\;80\; and\;100{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}s^{-l})$ regimes to examine growth responses. Their growth was measured weekly. Plant weight and lateral branch formation were affected by temperature and light intensity. As compared with other reports, relative growth rate (RGR) in both fragments was more or less high with 6.27 to $11.95\%$ $day^{-1}$. It was lowest at $15^{\circ}C$ with $20\mu mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-l}$, whereas, the highest value was recorded at $25^{\circ}C$ with $100\mu mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-l}$ During the experimental period, the growth pattern in G. verrucosa was significantly different between apical and subapical fragments, even though RGR based on weight was similar. Growth in apical fragments depended on elongation by apical growth. By contrast, subapical fragments mainly increased their weights by proliferation of lateral branch. This suggests that intercalary activity (e.g. lateral branch formation) is also an important means for growth of the thallus in Korean G. verrucosa. In conclusion, the relatively high growth potential with the intercalary activity in G. verrucosa will be helpful for mariculture in Korea.

  • Purpose: To identify which is the best procedure in recycling autograft according to the resection & reconstruction type and recycling methods, and so when the recycling autograft is used in limb salvage surgery. Materials and Methods: We have treated fifty-eight patients (34 male, 24 female; age range 5 to 74 years, mean age 36.5 years), who had the malignant musculoskeletal tumors, with recycling autograft (47 patients with extracoporeal irradiation, 11 patients with pasteurization) from December 1995 to February 2006. The resection and reconstruction type was 3 cases with fragmentary, 8 intercalary, 23 rAPC (recycling-Autograft-Prosthesis composite), 18 osteoarticular, 5 total joint and 1 soft tissue (achilles tendon). The result was evaluated by the radiologic union at junctional site, the functional score by musculoskeletal tumor society score and complications according to the resection & reconstruction type and recycling methods. Results: The junctional union was obtained at 15.0 months in extracoporeal irradiation and 12.6 months in pasteurization. Also the mean radiologic union was shown at 6.0 months in fragmentary, 12.8 months in intercalary, 10 months in rAPC, 23.3 months in osteoarticular and 15.6 months in total joint. The functional score was 65.5% in fragmentary, 60.8% in intercalary, 62.8% in APC (except pelvis), 66.0% in osteoarticular and 66.6% in total joint. We have experienced 1 infection, 1 prutrusio acetabuli in pasteurization (18.1%) and other 22 complications (3 deep infections, 8 nonunions, 2 fractures, 2 epiphyseal problems, 5 joint instabilities, 2 local recurrence) in extracoporeal irradiation (46.8%). Also we have experienced 3 complications (3 nonunions) in intercalary (37.5%), 9 complications (4 nonunions, 1 deep infection, 1 periprosthetic fracture, 1 epiphyseal problem, 1 local recurrence, 1 protrusio acetabuli) in rAPC (50.0%), 6 complications (2 deep infections, 2 nonunions, 1 epiphyseal problem, 1 pathologic fracture) in osteoarticular (33.3%), 5 complications (5 joint instabilities) in total joint (100%) and 1 complication(1 local recurrence) in soft tissue (100%). Conclusion: In our experience, according to the resection & reconstruction type fragmentary and intercalary may have several advantages such as good radiologic and functional result and low rate of complication. And it seems that rAPC was available in case which have no sufficient residual bone stock. Also the pasteurization may have more advantages than that of the extracorporeal irradiation.

  • Korean terminologies on stem structures in plant morphology, written incorrectly in many books, were analysed to propose accurately expressed terminologies. 35 books in areas such as general biology, plant biology, plant morphology, and biological dictionaries and glossaries were selected to analyse the accuracy of the terminologies for seed structures, e.g., shoot and shoot system, rhizome, apical dominance, anticlinal and periclinal divisions, and intercalary and lateral meristems. The definition and etymology of the terminologies were traced in 4 textbooks of plant anatomy and 2 dictionaries of biology and botany written in English. On the basis of the definition, etymology, and principles for terminology formation according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 704:2000), reasonably expressed Korean terminologies were proposed. All of the 8 terminologies examined in this study were included in the glossary of biological terminologies, published by the Korean Association of Biological Sciences in 2005, and designated as an editorial source for science and biology textbooks for middle and high schools by Ministry of Education in 2007. However, the only 1 of the 8 terminologies described in the glossary were consistent with the proposed expression in the present study. These inconsistencies indicated the need for a reassessment of this glossary of biological terminologies. The validity of the proposed Korean terminologies was tested in a questionnaire sent to 17 professors teaching plant morphology or/and taxonomy at universities. A mean of 91.9% of the total respondents agreed with the Korean expressions proposed in this study. The new, proposed terminologies would facilitate mutual understanding between teachers and students of plant biology.

  • The interphalangeal joint (IPJ) of the hallux has received little attention compared with the first metatarsophalangeal joint. But, the hallucal IPJ has several disorders such intra-articular fractures, dorsal dislocation, alignment disorder, and inflammatory or degenerative arthritis. Among these disorders septic arthritis of the IPJ of the hallux is rare. We report a case of sepsis of the hallucal IPJ and adjacent underlying osteomyelitis without neuropathic problem and was performed through infected soft tissue and osseous debridement, temporary antibiotic-impregnated cement spacer, and delayed intercalary allogenic fibular bone graft with K-wire fixation.

  • Two morphologically different species of Peridinium were frequently observed in natural samples collected monthly from Togyo Reservoir. One was previously identified as P. bipes Stein f. occultatum (Lindem.) Lef. (Ki and Han 2005), the other was remained uncertainly so far. We resolved their identity, based on the morphological observations with scanning electron microscopy. The formula of epithecal plate was recorded with 7 precingular, 3 intercalary and 4 apical plates (4', 3a, 7'). An apical pore was apparently present. The conspicuous morphology of the Peridinium was three spines on the hypothecal plates. The average body length and width were $33.6\;{\mu}m$ with a range of $26\~45{\mu}m$, and 25.7 with a range of $19\~31{\mu}m$, respectively; the cell was, therefore, shown slightly elongated. Based on their morphological characteristics, the causative organism was identified as P. aciculiferum (Lemm.), which was reported for the first time in Korean freshwater.

  • Dactylella pseudoclavata that captures nematodes in adhesive networks was isolated from nematode-infested strawberry plants from Andong, Korea. It produces obclavate, 0-1 septate conidia, $30-40{\mu}m$ long and $8-11{\mu}m$ wide, with round distal ends and bases shaped like bottle-necks. The conidiophores were simple, occasionally branched, $150-300{\mu}m$ long, producing 1-4 conidia at the apex. Chlamydospores were abundant, intercalary or catenulate, yellowish to brown, globate or subglobate, wart on the surface, $30-35{\times}25-30{\mu}m$ in size. This is the first report of Dactylella pseudoclavata in Korea.

  • In thecate dinoflagellates, the thecal plate pattern has been considered to be important criteria in their classifications. Due to this fact the shape of the theca and the arrangement of the theca were studied. In the pictures, the distinctions between the plates in the cells were so vague that I drew a diagram to illustrate the plate pattern. To identify the genus Protoperidinium, the shape of the first apical plate and the second anterior intercalary plate were used. Depending the shape of first apical plate, will be designated as meta(4), meta(5), para(4), para(5) or para(6). The shape of first apical plate is considered an important factor. From this point of view, the genus Protoperidinium as a group of planktonic protist in the coastal environment was classified.

  • The karyotype of Lilium cernum has been analysed by means of C-banding technique. Most of clones observed were 2n=24 chromosomes which consist of two pairs of submetacentric and ten pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes, among which two pairs of chromosomes(B and E) showed secondary constriction in the short arm. In addition to these chromosomes a small supernumerary telocentric chromosome was seen in the eight clones. Sixtyeight bands were observed in the twentytwo chromosomes of complement and one band in the supernumerary chromosome. A pair of chromosome (L) did not show any band. The bnads on the chromosome. A pair of chromosome (L) did not show any band. The bands on the chromosomes were distributed in the centromere, secondary constriction and intercalary regions of arms. Of the twelve pairs of chromosomes ten pairs showed symmetric banding patterns in each, but two pairs (I and K) showed asymmetric banding patterns.
