  • In this paper, we described the laboratory layout of the optical CT in connection with the measurement of large current based on Magneto-Optic Effects. It was used He-Ne laser for light source and was used PIN-Photodiode for light receiver. The sensing section was organized by winding optical fiber around conductor on the concept that the rotation angle of polarizing axis by Faraday Effect is proportional to the applied current in to conduction. The optical signal passed through optical fiber sensor was induced to analyzer arranged in the direction of $\theta$ for input polarization, and then analyzed its rotation angle and researched on operating characteristics of optical CT for 60[Hz] AC current measurement from l00[A] to 1000[A] was carried out. In this results, the output signals induced linearly with the current and proved that the intensity is increased with increasing turns of fiber through output differences which in accordance with turns of fiber and we verified that there is not only difference of the output with the medium between electric field and optical fiber, but also the lineality. Measuring the references and output intensities of the optical CT, ratio errors were within $\pm$7%. This confirmed that error rate will be improved by each medium and turns.

  • Applications of smart sensors have been extended to safety systems in the aerospace, transportation and civil engineering fields. In particular, structural health monitoring techniques using smart sensors have gradually become necessary and have been developed to prevent dangers to human life and damage to assets. Generally, smart sensors are based on electro-magnets and have several weaknesses, including electro-magnetic interference and distortion. Therefore, fiber optic sensors are an outstanding alternative to overcome the weaknesses of electro-magnetic sensors. However, they require expensive devices and complex systems. This paper proposes a new, affordable and simple sensor system that uses a single fiber to monitor pressures at multiple-points. Moreover, a prototype of the sensor system was manufactured and tested for a feasibility study. Based on the results of this experimental test, a relationship was carefully observed between the bend loss conditions and light-intensity. As a result, it was shown that impacts at multiple-points could be monitored.

  • An optical intensity-type pressure sensor has been fabricated by coupling multimode optical fiber with 100 nm-Au/30 nm-NiCr/150 nm-$Si_3N_4/300 nm-SiO_2/150 nm-Si_3N_4$ optical reflection layer supported by micromachined frame-shape silicon substrate, and its characteristics was investigated. For the application of $Si_3N_4/SiO_2/Si_3N_4$ diaphragm to the optical reflection layer of the sensor, NiCr and Au films were deposited on the backside of the diaphragm by thermal evaporation , respectively, and thus optical low caused by transmission in the reflection layer could be decreased to a few percents. Dielectric diaphragms with uniform thickness were able to be also reproduced because top- and bottom-$Si_3N_4$ layer of the diaphragm could automatically stop silicon anisotropic etching. The respective pressure ranges in which the sensor showed linear optical output power-pressure characteristics were 0~126.64 kPa, 0~79. 98 kPa, and 0~46.66 kPa, and the respective pressure sensitivities of the sensor were about 20.69 nW/kPa, 26.70 nW/kPa, and 39.33 nW/kPa, for the diaphragm sizes of 3$\times$3 $\textrm{mm}^2$, 4$\times$4 $\textrm{mm}^2$, and 5$\times$5 $\textrm{mm}^2$, indicating that the sensitivity increases as diaphragm size increases.

  • Fiber-optic biosensor for the detection of organophosphorus compounds in a contaminated water was developed, which was the component of pesticides and agricultural agent. The detection principle of designed sensor was the pH variance induced by a reaction of acetylcholinesterase enzyme inhibited by organophosphorus compounds. The pH variance was detected by the optical system to measure the organophosphorus compounds. Litmus was selected as the pH-sensitive dye suitable to the enzyme reaction and a light source to be detected by the optical system. The enzyme entrapped in Ca-alginate gel was immobilized at the inner wall to maintain the high activity of enzyme and to be reused for a long period. The optical fiber was used to miniaturize and control remotely the sensor system. The He-Ne laser with 632 nm was selected as the light source to prevent light intensity fluctuation by the product. Cheap plastic optical fibers were used as the transmission part of the light and the phototransistor was used as the reception part of light based on the wavelength of He-Ne laser. The proposed fiber-optic biosensor has the linear analytical range of 0 ppm-1.5 ppm with response time of 5 minutes.

  • This paper presents a distributed temperature sensor which uses a multimode optical fiber. The temperature distribution is derived from the intensity of the Raman back scattering light. Testing the sensors on measurement length of 2km of this system shows good temperature characteristics of the heated/cooled section. These performance will useful to design such as monitoring abnormal temperature rise of electric facilities.

  • Frequency Scanning Interferometry(FSI) system, one of the most promising optical surface measurement techniques, generally results in superior optical performance comparing with other 3-dimensional measuring methods as its hardware structure is fixed in operation and only the light frequency is scanned in a specific spectral band without vertical scanning of the target surface or the objective lens. FSI system collects a set of images of interference fringe by changing the frequency of light source. After that, it transforms intensity data of acquired image into frequency information, and calculates the height profile of target objects with the help of frequency analysis based on Fast Fourier Transform(FFT). However, it still suffers from optical noise on target surfaces and relatively long processing time due to the number of images acquired in frequency scanning phase. 1) a Polarization-based Frequency Scanning Interferometry(PFSI) is proposed for optical noise robustness. It consists of tunable laser for light source, ${\lambda}/4$ plate in front of reference mirror, ${\lambda}/4$ plate in front of target object, polarizing beam splitter, polarizer in front of image sensor, polarizer in front of the fiber coupled light source, ${\lambda}/2$ plate between PBS and polarizer of the light source. Using the proposed system, we can solve the problem of fringe image with low contrast by using polarization technique. Also, we can control light distribution of object beam and reference beam. 2) the signal processing acceleration method is proposed for PFSI, based on parallel processing architecture, which consists of parallel processing hardware and software such as Graphic Processing Unit(GPU) and Compute Unified Device Architecture(CUDA). As a result, the processing time reaches into tact time level of real-time processing. Finally, the proposed system is evaluated in terms of accuracy and processing speed through a series of experiment and the obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed system and method.
