대구시 산업단지 환경기초시설의 악취발생 특성 (Emission Characteristics of Odor Compounds from Fundamental Environmental Facilities in an Industrial Complex Area in Daegu City)

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the odor emission characteristics from fundamental environmental facilities at an industrial complex area in Daegu City. Methods: The odor samples were collected from May 2015 to January 2016 and were analyzed for specified offensive odor substances. The odor quotient and the odor contribution was calculated. Results: Ammonia was detected in all samples monitoring specified odor compounds, followed by hydrogen sulfide and acetaldehyde. According to contribution analysis, hydrogen sulfide shows the highest contribution in all facilities. At wastewater treatment plants A and B and sewage treatment plant F, it was followed by acetaldehyde. At wastewater treatment plant C, it was followed by imethyl sulfide. Conclusion: The major component of odor can be determined by evaluating the degree of contribution to the odor intensity rather than the concentration of the individual odor components. To increase the effectiveness of odor reduction, policies focused on materials with a high odor contribution are needed rather than focusing on high-concentration odor compounds.

숯가마 배가스 중 악취물질의 배출특성 (Emission Characteristics of Odor Compounds in a Charcoal Production Kiln)

  • Exhaust gas emitted as a result of the incomplete combustion of biomass in charcoal kilns includes odor compounds as well as other air pollutants such as particulate matters, sulfur and nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. A number of offensive odor compounds affect quality of life. In this study, odor emissions were investigated from biomass burning in a pilot-scale charcoal kiln and a commercial-scale kiln. Complex odor from emission source reached up to 10,000 dilutions to threshold during the study period. Combustion fume was found to contain reduced sulfur compounds, aldehydes, and volatile organic compounds. Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan were the major odorants which highly contributed to the offensive odor.

  • At Recent the number of livestock is rapidly increased and the scale of farm has changed to large operations in Korea. So the odors from livestock feeding operations have increased and become major environmental problem. The odor emission are dependent on the types of manure management system and the meteorological factors. This report presents the results of a questionnaire on the odor characteristics from livestock facilities for the beef, dairy, swine and poultry. It is founded that the impact by odors from the facilities for swine and poultry is higher than cow and dairy, and the odor intensity at morning is higher than other times.

신평장림 공단 폐수처리장 발생의 악취 조사연구 (Survey on Public Responses to Odor Produced at Jangrim-Sinpyoeng Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant in Busan)

  • Objective: Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from municipal wastewater treatment plants and industrial wastewater are often overlooked as sources of exposure to toxic chemicals. VOCs from such sources evaporate readily into the air and may have significantly adverse impacts on public health. The present study aimed to establish the concentration of VOCs released from Jangrim-sinpyoeng Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Treatment plant (JWTP) in Busan, South Korea and assess the causes of the odor/stench in the surrounding residential facilities. Stench intensity, frequency and release time, and wind direction were also monitored. Methods: Onsite data were collected on a daily basis from a laboratory located on the JWTP premises through a period spanning 2006 to 2010. A second set of data was obtained in 2006 by conducting a questionnaire survey with 210 respondents living near JWTP. The experimental and survey data were analysed statistically using the SPSS package. Results: The survey results showed that people residing around JWTP strongly perceive a stench from the plant. The intensity of the stench was influenced significantly by wind direction and the location of the apartments facing the JWTP. Public participation formed a significant step in determining the quality of the study environment. Conclusion: Onsite data and survey data obtained in 2006 indicate that the nature of the odor experienced by residents is due to the intensity of total VOCs released by JWTP. However, additional research is needed to determine the effects of the VOC pollution on public health and quality of life.

염소의 상수원 내 조류 이취미 Masking 효과 (Masking Effect of Chlorine on Algae-related Taste and Odor in Drinking Water Supplies)

  • The masking effect of chlorine on algae-related taste and odor(T&O) compounds has long been an important issue for water suppliers. In this study, masking experiments with chlorine were performed on two kinds of treated water and one of raw water. After adding chlorine(0 to 0.8 mg/L) to water samples, odor intensity was evaluated by a newly developed sensory method(2-out-of-5 odor test) for three days along with the measurement of residual chlorine concentration. Even though the relationship between the residual chlorine concentration and odor reported by the sensory analysts was not always coincident, it was proved that residual chlorine more than a certain concentration could completely mask both added geosmin and naturally occurring T&O compounds. For the sand-filtered water spiked with 10 ng/L of geosmin, 0.12-0.18 mg/L of residual chlorine was necessary to achieve complete masking. In the case of GAC-filtered water, 10 ng/L of spiked geosmin was completely masked by 0.15-0.1 mg/L of residual chlorine. Combined ozone and GAC was not enough to treat raw water spiked with 300 ng/L of geosmin. In this experiment, sensory analysts were able to detect earthy or musty odors from the treated water. From a masking experiment with raw water taken from the Daechung Reservoir, it was found that fishy odor was more difficult to mask with chlorine than earthy odor. As the chlorine residual declined, the analysts began to notice the original odor and the fishy odor was noticed earlier than the earthy odor.

적환장에서 발생하는 악취 분포 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Emission Characteristics of Odor Compounds from Waste Transfer Station)

  • Objective: This study was carried out for the purpose of identifying major substances contributing to the production of odor and evaluating the characteristic of odors. Methods: Complex odor and 17 odorous compounds were measured at 18 waste transfer stations located in Seoul. Results: The dilution ratio value of complex odor ranged from 4 to 30 times in the boundary layer of 18 waste transfer stations. At 6 measurement points among the 18 waste transfer stations, the dilution ratio values exceeded standards (15 times). When the results were evaluated in terms of their contribution to the formation of malodor, the patterns indicated that the highest concentration values in the residential waste disposal process were of i-valeraldehyde and acetaldehyde, while butyraldehyde and acetaldehyde accounted for a large proportion of odorous compounds from the waste recycling process. Conclusions: It was found that butyraldehyde and acetaldehyde were the primary compounds released from the food waste disposal process. Overall, aldehyde compounds were the greatest contributor to detectable odor intensity emitted at the waste transfer stations.

섬유제품의 지속가능한 관리를 위한 보관환경에 따른 특성변화 연구 (Changes in the Characteristics of Textile Products according to the Storage Environmental Condition for Sustainable Care)

  • This study aims to establish the optimal environmental conditions for storing textile products. Four textile products (cotton, wool, nylon, cotton/polyurethane) were used to produce experimental fabrics according to artificial contamination and washing conditions. Each fabric was subjected to three environmental conditions (A: 20-25℃/20% RH, B: 20-25℃/50% RH, C: 30-35℃/65% RH) for 4-12 weeks. Changes in textile characteristics include tensile strength, wrinkle recovery rate, and odor intensity. Results show that the change in tensile strength for the four test fabrics slightly decreased with a storage time of 4 to 12 weeks. The wrinkle recovery rate of the fabrics was the lowest under the C condition. UV exposure causes a substantial decrease in the tensile strength of the textiles. The change in odor characteristics was the highest for the odor intensity in the C condition. For storing textile products for sustainable management, it is desirable to maintain a temperature of 20 to 25℃ with a relative humidity of 50% RH or less and to provide ventilation in an enclosed storage space that can also block UV rays.

하수관거에 퇴적된 유기물에 의한 악취 발생과 산화전리시스템을 이용한 악취 저감 (Odor Emission from Sediments in Sewer Systems and Odor Removal using an Electrolytic Oxidation Process)

  • Odor emission from domestic sewer systems has become a serious environmental problem. An investigation on a sewer manhole revealed that anaerobic decay of sediment organic matters (SOMs) and related declines of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) in the sediment layer were the main reason of the production of volatile sulfur compounds. In addition, as the anaerobic decaying period continued, the odor intensity rapidly increased with increasing concentrations of $H_2S$ and dimethyl sulfide. As a feasible method to control SOMs and to minimize odor emission potentials, an electrolytic oxidation process has been employed to the sediment sludge phase. In this study, voltages applied to the electrolytic oxidation process were varied as a main system parameter, and its effects on odor removal efficiencies and reaction characteristics were investigated. At the applied voltages greater than 20 V, the system efficiently oxidized the organic matter, and the ORP in the sludge phase increased rapidly. As a consequence, the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide was found to be >99% within 60 minutes of the electrolytic oxidation. Overall, the electrolytic oxidation process can be an alternative to control odor emission from sewer systems, and a threshold input energy needs to be determined to achieve effective operation of the process.

액상 가축분뇨의 처리 및 토양환원에 따른 악취 및 악취물질의 평가 (Evaluation of Odors and Odorous Compounds from Liquid Animal Manure Treated with Different Methods and Their Application to Soils)

  • 효율적인 악취방지책을 수립하고 시행하는 것은 지속가능한 축산 뿐만 아니라 증가되는 악취 민원과 더욱 엄격해지는 법규에 대응하기 위해 필수적이다. 본 연구는 돈분뇨의 처리방법에 따른 액상분뇨 유래 악취 및 처리방법이 다른 액상분뇨를 토양에 살포시 발생하는 악취 및 악취물질을 평가하기 위하여 수행되었다. 시험에 사용된 액상분뇨는 신선 분뇨, 혐기성 소화 액상분뇨 및 고온 호기성 소화 액상분뇨를 이용하였고, 토양 특성이 다른 논/밭 토양을대상으로 총 6처리 5반복 설계 배치하였다. 시료 포집은 관능법과 기기분석법에 사용될 시료를 각각 주사기와 테들러 백을 이용하여 액상분뇨와 액상분뇨를 살포한 토양의 상부공간에서 채취하였다. 악취 분석은 관능법을 이용하여 악취강도 및 불쾌도를 평가하였고, 기기분석법으로는 질소화합물 악취물질인 암모니아를 흡광광도법, 황화합물 악취물질인 황화수소, 메틸머캅탄, 다이메틸설파이드 및 다이메틸다이설파이드를 GC-PFPD를 이용하여 분석하였다. 처리과정이 다른 액상분뇨의 악취 및 악취물질 발생 평가에서 고온 호기성 소화 액상분뇨가 신선 분뇨 및 혐기성 소화 액상분뇨에 비해 악취강도, 불쾌도 및 악취농도 저감 효과가 매우 두드러지게 나타났으며 통계적으로도 유의적인 차이가 인정되었다. 혐기성 소화 액상분뇨와 고온 호기성 소화 액상분뇨에서 발생되는 황화수소, 메틸머캅탄, 다이메틸설파이드, 다이메틸다이설파이드 및 암모니아의 평균농도는 각각 65.93 : 5.15 ppb, 18.55 : 0.97ppb, 5.26 : 0.80ppb, 0.33 : 0.56ppb 및 10.57 : 1.34ppm으로 분석되었다. 액상분뇨를 밭과 논 토양에 살포시 혐기성 소화 액상분뇨와 고온 호기성 소화 액상분뇨가 각각 51~94% 및 22~91%의 암모니아 저감 효율을 나타내었다. 본 시험의 결과를 종합할 때 고온 호기성 소화 액상분뇨가 악취 저감이라는 측면에서 다른 처리방법에 비해 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 액상분뇨의 토양환원에서 발생되는 악취문제는 액상분뇨의 처리방법에 따른 악취발생 정도와 직접적인 연관이 있다고 사료된다.

한강유역 축분퇴비공장 근로자의 작업환경 만족도 평가 (Evaluation on the Degree of Satisfaction with Working Environment for Workers Engaged in the Composting Plant with Livestock Manure in the Han-river Watershed)

  • 본 연구에서는 한강유역에 위치한 축분퇴비공장의 작업환경 조사를 위한 현장 평가로서, 설문조사 및 악취물질 측정을 통해 근로자들의 작업환경 만족 수준과 이에 영향을 주는 요인들을 규명하였다. 연구결과, 축분퇴비공장 근로자들의 작업환경 만족도에 영향을 주는 요인들로 일반 건강수준, 악취, 작업량, 분진, 흡연으로 조사되었으며, 이 중 일반 건강수준, 악취, 작업량이 전체 작업환경 만족도의 61.3%를 대변하는 것으로 나타났다. 통계적 유의성을 나타낸 작업환경변수로는 일반 건강수준(p$<$0.01), 악취 작업량 분진(p$<$0.05) 등 이었다. 결론적으로 일반 건강수준이 높은 근로자일수록 작업환경 만족도가 높았으며, 작업량이 상대적으로 많고 악취와 분진에 쉽게 노출된 공장의 근로자일수록 작업환경 만족도가 낮은 것으로 분석되었다. 흡연을 하는 근로자는 작업환경 만족도가 낮게 나타냈으나, 통계적 유의성은 없는 것으로 분석되었다. 따라서 한강유역 축분퇴비공장 근로자들의 작업환경 만족도를 제고시키기 위해서는 공정 중 악취와 분진농도의 발생을 저감시켜야 할 것으로 판단된다. 그러므로 축분퇴비공장의 악취 및 분진농도의 발생을 최소화할 수 있는 처리공정 및 관리체계 정립이 시급하며, 이는 궁극적으로 축분퇴비공장 작업자의 건강 뿐만 아니라 주변 마을 정주민의 생활환경개선효과를 유발할 수 있다.
