  • Machine learning in an uncertain or unknown environment is of vital interest to those working with intelligent systems. The ability to garner new information, process it, and increase the understanding/ capability of the machine is crucial to the performance of autonomous systems. The field of artificial intelligence provides two major approaches to the problem of knowledge engineering-expert systems and neural networks. Harnessing the power of these two techniques in a hybrid, cooperating system holds great promise.

  • Significant progress has been made recently in detection of highly sensitive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using chemical sensors. Combined with the progress in design of micro sensors array and electronic nose systems, these advances enable new applications for detection of extremely low concentrations of breath-related VOCs. State of the art detection technology in turn enables commercial sensor systems for health care applications, with high detection sensitivity and small size, weight and power consumption characteristics. We have been developing an intelligent electronic nose system for detection of VOCs for healthcare breath analysis applications. This paper reviews our contribution to monitoring of respiratory diseases and to diabetic monitoring using an intelligent electronic nose system for detection of low concentration VOCs using breath analysis techniques.

  • Ontology maintenance is a time consuming and costly process which requires special skill and knowledge. It requires joint effort of both ontology engineer and domain specialist to properly maintain ontology and update knowledge in it. This is specially true for medical domain which is highly specialized domain. This paper proposes a novel approach for maintenance and update of existing ontologies in a medical domain. The proposed approach is based on modified Ontology Maturing Process which was originally developed for web domain. The proposed approach provides way to populate medical ontology with new knowledge obtained from medical documents. This is achieved through use of natural language processing techniques and highly specialized medical knowledge bases such as Unified Medical Language System.

  • A network with high mobility nodes or vehicles is vehicular ad hoc Network (VANET). For improvement in communication efficiency of VANET, many techniques have been proposed; one of these techniques is vehicular node clustering. Cluster nodes (CNs) and Cluster Heads (CHs) are elected or selected in the process of clustering. The longer the lifetime of clusters and the lesser the number of CHs attributes to efficient networking in VANETs. In this paper, a novel Clustering algorithm is proposed based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) for VANET named ACONET. This algorithm forms optimized clusters to offer robust communication for VANETs. For optimized clustering, parameters of transmission range, direction, speed of the nodes and load balance factor (LBF) are considered. The ACONET is compared empirically with state of the art methods, including Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) and Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (CLPSO) based clustering techniques. An extensive set of experiments is performed by varying the grid size of the network, the transmission range of nodes, and total number of nodes in network to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithms in comparison. The results indicate that the ACONET has significantly outperformed the competitors.

  • As the mobile computing technologies rapidly develops, the mobile phones are evolving into smart phones capable of higher performance. However, it is inevitable that the mobile phones have limited input/output functions in order to maintain the current portability. Because of the limited input and output, the mobile user interfaces currently adopt the inefficient structures based on sequential search and selection. In this paper, an intelligent and adaptive user interface techniques are proposed in order to surmount the current inefficiency of the static interface and to maximize the user convenience. The proposed techniques, based on the users' previous tasks, automatically generate an intelligent and adaptive user interface in order to make users efficiently utilize the mobile services.

  • In this paper, we propose a Genetic Algorithm (GA) using symbiotic evolutionary viruses. Our GA is based on both the building block hypothesis and the virus theory of evolution. The proposed GA aims to control a destruction of building blocks by discovering, keeping, and propagating of building blocks based on virus operation. Concretely, we prepare the group of individuals and the group of viruses. In our GA, the group of individuals searches solutions and the group of viruses searches building blocks. These searches done based on the symbiotic relation of both groups. Also, our GA has two types of virus evaluation techniques. One is that each virus is evaluated by the difference of the fitness of an individual between before and after infection of virus. Another is that all viruses aye evaluated by the difference of the fitness of an individual between before and after infection of all viruses. Furthermore, we applied the proposed GA to the minimum value search problem of a test function which has some local solutions far from the optimal solution. And, we discuss a difference of behaviors of the proposed GA based on each virus evaluation techniques.

  • This paper focuses on the design of an intelligent control system. The used techniques are based on Neuro Fuzzy approaches applied to a magnetorheological damper in order to reduce the vibrations over footbridges; it has been applied to the Science Museum Footbridge of Valladolid, particularly. A model of the footbridge and of the damper has been built using different simulation tools, and a successful comparison with the real footbridge and the real damper has been carried out. This simulated model has allowed the reproduction of the behaviour of the footbridge and damper when a pedestrian walks across the footbridge. Once it is determined that the simulation results are similar to real data, the control system is introduced into the model. In this sense, different strategies based on Neuro Fuzzy systems have been studied. In fact, an ANFIS (Artificial Neuro Fuzzy Inference System) method has also been used, in addition to an alternative Neuro Fuzzy approach. Several trials have been carried out, using both techniques, obtaining satisfactory results after using these techniques.

  • The objectives of this study were to introduce the easiest and most proper applications of datamining in industrial processes. Applying datamining in manufacturing is very different from applying it in marketing. Misapplication of datamining in manufacturing system results in significant problems. Therefore, it is very important to determine the best procedure and technique in advance. In previous studies, related literature has been introduced, but there has not been much description of datamining applications. Research has not often referred to descriptions of particular examples dealing with application problems in manufacturing. In this study, a datamining roadmap was proposed to support datamining applications for industrial processes. The roadmap was classified into three stages, and each stage was categorized into reasonable classes according to the datamining purposed. Each category includes representative techniques for datamining that have been broadly applied over decades. Those techniques differ according to developers and application purposes; however, in this paper, exemplary methods are described. Based on the datamining roadmap, nonexperts can determine procedures and techniques for datamining in their applications.

  • A Study on the Countermeasures against International Computer Crime focusing on the Police Investigation Procedure. These days, much more intelligent, varied and advanced techniques for computer crimes have been used than for development of technology. In particular, it has been reported that the damages are enormous. Damages of some computer crimes can not be accurately reported. This study is to speculate specific types of computer crimes and obtain its prevention and countermeasures centering on the Police Investigation Procedure. In particular, it is to speculate international cooperation under the condition that global damages occur frequently due to preparation of advanced network environment.
