The electromechanical integrated toroidal drive is a new drive system. For the control of the drive, the torque fluctuation and the steady-state errors should be removed and the fast response to the input change should be achieved. In this paper, the torque fluctuation of the drive system is analyzed and expressed as Fourier series forms. The transfer function of the torque control for the drive system is derived from its electromechanical coupled dynamic equations. A 2-DOF control method is used to control the drive system. Using definite parameter relationship of the 2-DOF control system, the steady errors of the torque control for the drive system is removed. Influences of the drive parameters on the control system are investigated. Using proper drive parameters, the response time of the control system is reduced and the quick torque response of the drive system is realized. Using a compensated input voltage, the torque fluctuation of the drive system is removed as well. The compensated input voltage can be obtained from the torque fluctuation equation and the transfer function. These research results are useful for designing control system of the new drive.
In this paper, the double displacement coupled statics and dynamics of the electromechanical integrated electrostatic harmonic drive are developed. The linearization of the nonlinear dynamic equations is completed. Based on natural frequency and mode function, the double displacement coupled forced response of the drive system to voltage excitation are obtained. Changes of the forced response along with the system parameters are investigated. The voltage excitation can cause the radial and tangent coupled forced responses of the flexible ring. The flexible ring radius, ring thickness and clearance between the ring and stator have obvious influences on the double displacement coupled forced responses.
In this paper, the equivalent exciting force caused by electric excitation is derived. By dividing load and displacement vectors into mean values and time-varying ones, the dynamic equations of the system are transformed into linear ones for time-varying portion of the displacements. The analytical equations of the forced time responses of the drive system to electric excitations are obtained. Using the Laplace transformation, the transfer function of the drive system is obtained. These equations are used to analyze the time and frequency responses of the drive system to the electric excitation. It is known that electric excitation can cause forced responses of the drive system, the total dynamic responses are decided by three phase exciting voltages, exciting frequency and natural frequencies of the drive system, and the drive parameters have obvious influence on the time and frequency responses.
This paper deals with automated computer-aided process planning by which designers can determine operation sequences even if they have little experience in the design of press working products. The computer-aided process planning in hot forging, deep drawing and blanking requires many kinds of technical and empirical skills based on investigation and collection of the knowledge of their processes. An approach to the CAPP system is based on the knowledge-based rules and the process knowledge base consisting of process planning rules is built. The methodology adopted to develop the system is elaborated in this paper. This system has been written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD with a personal computer and provides powerful capabilities for process planning of hot forging, cold forging, deep drawing and blanking products.
This paper presents a new design concept for ocean nuclear power plants (ONPPs) using a tension leg platform (TLP). The system-integrated modular advanced reactor, which is one of the successful small modular reactors, is mounted for demonstration. The authors define the design requirements and parameters, modularize and rearrange the nuclear and other facilities, and propose a new total general arrangement. The most fundamental level of design results for the platform and tendon system are provided, and the construction procedure and safety features are discussed. The integrated passive safety system developed for the gravity based structure-type ONPP is also available in the TLP-type ONPP with minor modifications. The safety system fully utilizes the benefits of the ocean environment, and enhances the safety features of the proposed concept. For the verification of the design concept, hydrodynamic analyses are performed using the commercial software ANSYS AQWA with the Pierson-Moskowitz and JONSWAP wave spectra that represent various ocean environments and the results are discussed.
The number of cable-stayed bridges has been increasing worldwide, causing issues in maintaining the structural safety and integrity of bridges. The stay cable, one of the most critical members in cable-stayed bridges, is vulnerable to wind-induced vibrations owing to its inherent low damping capacity. Thus, vibration mitigation of stay cables has been an important issue both in academia and practice. While a semi-active control scheme shows effective vibration reduction compared to a passive control scheme, real-world applications are quite limited because it requires complicated equipment, including for data acquisition, and power supply. This study aims to develop an Arduino-based integrated cable vibration control system implementing a semi-active control algorithm. The integrated control system is built on the low-cost, low-power Arduino platform, embedding a semi-active control algorithm. A MEMS accelerometer is installed in the platform to conduct a state feedback for the semi-active control. The Linear Quadratic Gaussian control is applied to estimate a cable state and obtain a control gain, and the clipped optimal algorithm is implemented to control the damping device. This study selects the magnetorheological damper as a semi-active damping device, controlled by the proposed control system. The developed integrated system is applied to a laboratory size cable with a series of experimental studies for identifying the effect of the system on cable vibration reduction. The semi-active control embedded in the integrated system is compared with free and passive mode cases and is shown to reduce the vibration of stay-cables effectively.

The application of Photovoltaic (PV) power in the building sector, is expanding as part of the ongoing energy transition into renewables. The article addresses the question of sustainability of energy generated from PVs through an environmental assessment of a building-integrated PV system (BIPV) connected to the grid through net metering. Employing retrospective life cycle analysis (LCA), with the CCaLC2 software and ecoinvent data, the article shows that the carrying structure and other balance of system (BOS) components are responsible for a three times higher energy payback time than the literature average. However, total environmental impact can be lowered through reuse or reinstallation of PVs on the same building structure after the 30-year interval. Further ways to improve environmental efficiency include identifying the most polluting materials for each LCA parameter. The results of this study are of interest to researchers and producers of PVs and organizations investing and promoting decentralized power production through PVs.
To achieve rapid developments and cost savings in manufacturing industries including automotive die shops, new paradigm and its supporting systems of information managements through total product life cycle are needed for concurrent and collaborative engineering. For manufacturing of automotive press dies, integrated and efficient managements of PPR information including product, manufacturing process and resource are essential. In this paper, we introduce a PLM approach to achieve engineering collaborations in product development and production of automotive dies. To prove concepts and benefits of PPR information managements, we implement new business workflow and detail procedures, PPR information management system and other related applications. By PPR information managements in PLM, improvements in quality of engineering results and savings in time from design to production of dies are possible.
Renewable energy such as wave energy has gained popularity as a means of reducing greenhouse gases. However, the high cost and lack of available sea space in some countries have hindered the deployment of wave energy converters (WEC) as alternative means of sustainable energy production. By combining WECs with infrastructures such as floating breakwaters or piers, the idea of electricity generated from WECs will be more appealing. This paper considers the integration of vertical raft-type WEC (commonly known as the vertical flap WEC) with floating breakwater as means to generate electricity and attenuate wave force in the tropical sea. An array of 25 WECs attached to a floating breakwater is considered where their performance and effect on the wave climate are presented. The effects of varying dimensions of the WEC and mooring system of the floating breakwater have on the energy generation are investigated. The integrated WECs and floating breakwater is subjected to both the regular and irregular waves in the tropical sea to assess the performance of the system. The result shows that the integrated vertical flap-floating breakwater system can generate a substantial amount of wave energy and at the same time attenuate the wave force effectively for the tropical sea when optimal dimensions of the WECs are used.
