The 2006 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) defines ecosystem services (ES) as "the benefits people obtain from ecosystems". Identifying where ES originates, whom it benefits and how it is changing over a period of time is critical in rapidly developing country like Nepal, where the risk of ES loss is high. In the context of various ecosystem services provided by watershed, this study, particularly deals with water yield, Soil loss and Carbon sequestration computation and evaluation in Bagmati Basin of Nepal. As Bagmati Basin incorporates capital city Kathmandu of nepal, land use change is significant over decades and mapping of ES is crucial for sustainable development of Basin in future. In this regard, the objectives of this study are 1) To compute the total and sub-watershed scale water yield of the basin, 2) Computation of soil loss and sediment retention in the basin, and 3) Computation of carbon sequestration in the basin. Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST), a popular model for ecosystem service assessment based on Budyko hydrological method is used to compute Ecosystem services. The scenario of ES in two periods of time can be referenced for various approaches of prioritization and incorporation of their value into local and regional decision making for management of basin.
Climate technology applied to address climate change requires a comprehensive review such as environmental and social acceptability in addition to economic feasibility. Not only mitigation and adaptation technologies, but also integration of climate technologies into a business model with other relevant technologies including ICT, finance, and policy instruments could enhance technical, economic, and environmental performances to respond to climate changes. However, many climate projects (and business models) are currently not designed to consider adequately complex climate?related issues. In addition, there is a lack of research on assessment systems that can comprehensively evaluate business feasibility of such models. In this study, we developed a system consisting of nine major indicators in four fields to assess climate technology-based business models. Each indicator was weighed using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for systematic assessment of business models. The process can be utilized as a tool to guide improvement of climate technology business models.
Recent analysis results with realistic assumptions provide the variability of operator allowable time for the initiation of aggressive cooldown under small break loss of coolant accident or steam generator tube rupture with total failure of high pressure safety injection. We investigated how plant risk may vary depending on the variability of operators' failure probability of timely initiation of aggressive cooldown. Using a probabilistic safety assessment model of a nuclear power plant, we showed that plant risks had a linear relation with the failure probability of aggressive cooldown and could be reduced by up to 10% as aggressive cooldown is more reliably performed. For individual accident management, we found that core damage potential could be gradually reduced by up to 40.49% and 63.84% after a small break loss of coolant accident or a steam generator tube rupture, respectively. Based on the importance of timely initiation of aggressive cooldown by main control room operators within the success criteria, implications for improvement of emergency operating procedures are discussed. We recommend conducting further detailed analyses of aggressive cooldown, commensurate with its importance in reducing risks in nuclear power plants.

This study is to explore the applicability of PBL classes in undergraduate education at a School of Dentistry. To do this study, PBL modules were developed and applied to the students with different background knowledge to easily learn Integrated Medicine and Lifescience classes. Participants were 12 students in the first year of Integrated MS program at P University. Four tutors who majored in Dentistry and had PBL teaching experience participated. As a result of the PBL classes, students' concepts and knowledge about gene expression and expression were expanded, and they recognized the importance of self-directed learners and experienced the importance of collaborative learning. PBL tutor presented a positive assessment of attending PBL class experience and the educational need for PBL instruction. The results of this study show the possibility of PBL as a model for Integrated Medicine and Lifescience class in Dentistry education.
Active attention and effort are needed to develop an integrated water management system in response to climate change. In this study, it proposed models for cross-use of agricultural water and river maintenance water using sewage treatment water as an integrated water management system for the Yeongsan River. The impact of the integrated water management models was assessed by applying the concept of Nexus, which is being presented worldwide for sustainable resource management. The target year was set for 2030 and quantitatively analyzed water, energy, land use and carbon emissions and resource availability index by integrated water management models was calculated by applying maximum usable amount by resource. An integrated water management system evaluation model using the Nexus concept developed in this study can play a role that can be viewed in a variety of ways: security and environmental impact assessment of other resources. The results of this research will be used as a foundation for the field of in the establishment of a policy decision support system to evaluate various security policies, as we analyzed changes in other factors according to changes in individual components, taking into account the associations between water, energy, food, and carbon resources. In future studies, additional sub-models need to be built that can be applied flexibly to changes in the future timing of the inter-resource relationship components.

The purpose of this study is to explore and develop a new instructional approach to a technology-enhanced, collaborative learning environment called Smart technology-enhanced Team-Based Learning (S-TBL). We designed a novel instructional model that combines mobile technology, collaborative teamwork, a problem-solving process, and a variety of evaluation techniques from the viewpoint of a conventional team-based model. Based on the traditional TBL model, we have integrated smart learning technologies: 1) to provide a holistic learning environment that integrates learning resources, assessment tools, and problem solving spaces; and 2) to enhance collaboration and communication between team members and between an instructor and his or her students. The S-TBL instructional approach combines: 1) individual learning and collaborative team learning; 2) conceptual learning and problem-solving & critical thinking; 3) both individual and group assessment; 4) self-directed learning and teacher-led instruction; and 5) personal reflection and publication.

An integrated model for groundwater flow and radionuclide transport analyses is being developed incorporating six underground silos, an excavated damaged zone (EDZ), and fractured host rock. The model considers each silo as an engineered barrier system (EBS) consisting of a waste zone comprising waste packages and disposal container, a buffer zone, and a concrete lining zone. The EDZ is the disturbed zone adjacent to silos and construction & operation tunnels. The heterogeneity of the fractured rock is represented by a heterogeneous flow field, evaluated from discrete fractures in the fractured host rock. Radionuclide migration through the EBS in silos and the fractured host rock is simulated on the established heterogeneous flow field. The current model enables the optimization of silo design and the quantification of the safety margin in terms of radionuclide release.

SWAT-K (Soil and Water Assessment Tool-Korea) model is a long-term runoff model using a soil-centered water balance equation. Soil is crucial for simulating hydrological components, requiring a database (usersoil.dbf) with soil series attribute information. Since the soil property information estimated by soil transfer functions developed overseas does not reflect the characteristics of domestic soil, the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology has established the soil database, which incorporates the results of domestic soil surveys and research from the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences. This study provides a more detailed description of the hydrological component simulation process using soil property information and revises and supplements the previously established soil database to operate in the latest SWAT model. Additionally, by providing this database through the integrated water management platform, it is expected to be utilized not only in the SWAT-K model but also in various watershed hydrological models developed considering soil characteristics.

In decades, a substantial body of work on a unified viscoplastic model which considers the mechanism of plastic deformation and creep deformation has developed. The systematic scheme for numerical analysis of unified model is necessary because the dominant failure mechanism is the defect growth and coalescence in materials. In the present study, the unified viscoplastic model for materials with defects suggested by Suquet and Michel was employed for numerical analysis. The constitutive equations are integrated based on the generalized mid-point rule and implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) by means of user-defined subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the validity of the developed UMAT code and the assessment of the adopted viscoplastic model, the results obtained from the UMAT code was compared with the numerical reference solution and experimental data. The unit cell analysis also has been investigated to study the effect of strain rate, temperature, stress triaxiality and initial defect volume fraction on the growth and coalescence of the defect.
This article analyzes the interdependency between nonrenewable marine sand resources and renewable fishery resources by the developed dynamic bioeconomic model. The developed bioeconomic model is applied to a case study of efficient sustainable management for marine sand mining, which adversely affects a valuable blue crab fishery and its habitat in Korea. The socially-efficient extraction plan for marine sand and the time-variant environmental external costs to society in terms of diminished harvest rate of blue crab are determined. To take into account long-term effects from destroyed fishery habitat, a Beverton-Holt age structure model is integrated into the bioeconomic model. The illustrative results reveal that the efficient sand extraction plan is dynamically constrained by the stock size of the blue crab fishery over time. Thus, the dynamic environmental external cost is more realistic resource policy option than the classical fixed external cost for determining socially optimal extraction plans. Additionally, the economic value of bottom habitat, which supports the on- and off-site commercial blue crab fishery is estimated. The empirical results are interpreted with emphasis on guidelines for management policy for marine sand mining.
