  • We propose novel schemes to enhance the expressible depth range of integral imaging. The implemented system that adopts the mirror barrier array has the compact thickness that is suitable for the practical use. With this system, the expressible depth range of the integral imaging is increased to over 120mm. The system that eliminates the mechanical motion also had been implemented. Experimental results are presented and the way to resolve the problem of occlusion is also discussed.

  • We analyze image visibility of a projection-type integral imaging system without diffuser, in terms of the fill factor, which is determined by the relationship between the exit pupil of the projection system and the size and the focal length of the elemental lens. High fill factor is a requirement for good visibility. Moreover, for psychological reasons, for the same fill factor, better visibility is accomplished using a relatively small elemental lens. In this paper, we study image visibility through basic experiments and results.

  • In the integral imaging system for 3D display, the elemental image size is closely related to the several variables, such as the size of elemental lens, the distance between elemental lens and elemental image, etc., on the pick up system. We have analyzed the geometric relation between the variables. In addition, we have investigated the integrated image variation for the individual and whole conversion of the size of the elemental images, different from in pick up process, and presented experimental results.

  • In this paper, we propose the algorithm for generating the array of elemental image by using look-up table (L UT) in a computer generated integral imaging system. It makes the LUT independently for the projection point of x and y. The algorithm using LUT to the existing ones needs less computing time to generate the array of elemental image. By comparing the computing time of proposed algorithm with that of the existing algorithms e xperimently, we proved the efficiency of proposed algorithm.

  • In generally, the resolution of reconstructed three-dimensional images can be seriously degraded by undesired occlusions in the integral imaging system, because the undesired information of the occlusion overlap the three-dimensional images to be reconstructed. To solve the problem of the undesired occlusion, we present an exemplar-based image restoration method in integral imaging system. In the proposed method, a minimum spanning tree-based stereo matching method is used to remove the region of undesired occlusions in each elemental image. After that, the removed occlusion region of each elemental images are re-established by using the exemplar-based image restoration method. For further improve the performance of the image restoration, the structure tensor is used to solve the filling error cause by discontinuous structures. Finally, the resolution enhanced three-dimensional images are reconstructed by using the restored elemental images. The preliminary experiments are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • In this paper we propose an improved version of the computational integral imaging reconstruction (CIIR) for visualizing a partially occluded object by utilizing an image inpainting technique. In the proposed method the elemental images for a partially occluded three-dimensional (3D) object are recorded through the integral imaging pickup process. Next, the depth of occlusion within the elemental images is estimated using two different CIIR methods, and the weight mask pattern for occlusion is generated. After that, we apply our image inpainting technique to the recorded elemental images to fill in the occluding area with reliable data, using information from neighboring pixels. Finally, the inpainted elemental images for the occluded region are reconstructed using the CIIR process. To verify the validity of the proposed system, we carry out preliminary experiments in which faces are the objects. The experimental results reveal that the proposed system can dramatically improve the quality of a reconstructed CIIR image.

  • A new algorithm of the image mapping which is a technique of the elemental image generation is proposed. The proposed method is based on the characteristics of the lens array such as the number, the size and the focal length of the elemental lens. The 3D image generated by 3D graphic API such as OpenGL can be directly adopted without the complex adaptation. Since the image mapping using the proposed method can enhance the speed of the elemental image generation, the computer- generated integral imaging system can be applied to virtual reality system.

  • In this paper, it is proposed that the integral imaging technique is applied to reconstruct 3D (three dimensional) objects with enhanced depth of field, computationally and optically. Lens array using birefringence material is adopted to obtain the reconstruction. The elemental images sets are picked up through common micro lens array and utilized to present 3D reconstruction images using adopted lens array.

  • In this paper, we analyze the limitation on the expressible depth range that is one major problem of integral imaging. We provide the explanation that exactly predicts the experimental results and the way to evaluate the expressible depth range numerically. We also give the design method for the multi-central depth plane integral imaging system. Finally, we will show the experimental results for verification.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm to generate the array of elemental image in a computer generated integral imaging system. It generates the array of elemental image using depth information, needs less computing time to produce the result by using the concept of boundary area and computing the voxel within boundary area. By comparing the computing time of proposed algorithm with that of the existing algorithm theoretically and experimently, we proved the efficiency of this algorithm.
