In an integral-imaging microscopy (IIM) system, a microlens array (MLA) is the primary optical element; however, surface errors impede the resolution of a raw image's details. Calibration is a major concern with regard to incorrect projection of the light rays. A ray-tracing-based calibration method for an IIM camera is proposed, to address four errors: MLA decentering, rotational, translational, and subimage-scaling errors. All of these parameters are evaluated using the reference image obtained from the ray-traced white image. The areas and center points of the microlens are estimated using an "8-connected" and a "center-of-gravity" method respectively. The proposed approach significantly improves the rectified-image quality and nonlinear image brightness for an IIM system. Numerical and optical experiments on multiple real objects demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of our proposed method, which achieves on average a 35% improvement in brightness for an IIM raw image.

Integral imaging is an auto-stereoscopic display method that can produce 3D image of a finite viewing window through an array of micro elemental lenses. Integral imaging requires the pickup part of each elemental images acquisition and display part of reconstruction of the images. The successful reconstructed image depends on various parameters such as distance between lens arrays and display device, focal length of lenses, and a number of the array. In this paper, we present reconstruction emulator for display of Integral imaging in order to adjust parameters for 3D contents reconstruction and to observe the result from different configuration. Especially, we provide the user interface for the emulator to control the distance easily. We have confirmed through various experiments that the emulator adjusted the distance and could check error in the process of creating elemental images.

The integral imaging system is an auto-stereoscopic display that allows users to see 3D images without wearing special glasses. In the integral imaging system, the 3D object information is taken from several view points and stored as elemental images. Then, users can see a 3D reconstructed image by the elemental images displayed through a lens array. The elemental images can be created by computer graphics, which is referred to the computer-generated integral imaging. The process of creating the elemental images is called image mapping. There are some image mapping methods proposed in the past, such as PRR(Point Retracing Rendering), MVR(Multi-Viewpoint Rendering) and PGR(Parallel Group Rendering). However, they have problems with heavy rendering computations or performance barrier as the number of elemental lenses in the lens array increases. Thus, it is difficult to use them in real-time graphics applications, such as virtual reality or real-time, interactive games. In this paper, we propose a new image mapping method named VVR(Viewpoint Vector Rendering) that improves real-time rendering performance. This paper describes the concept of VVR first and the performance comparison of image mapping process with previous methods. Then, it discusses possible directions for the future improvements.

In this research the coupling problem between the elastic structure and the fluid, specially the hydroelastic harmonic vibration problem, is studied. In order to couple the domains, i.e., the structural domain and the fluid domain, the boundary integral method(direct boundary integral formulation) is used in the fluid domain in combination with the finite element method for the structure. The boundary integral method has been widely developed to apply it to the hydroelastic vibration problem. The hybrid boundary integral method using eigenfunctions on the radiation boundaries and the boundary integral method using the series form image-functions to replace the even bottom and free surface boundaries in case of high frequencies have been developed and tested. According to the boundary conditions and the frequency ranges the different boundary integral methods with the different idealizations of the fluid boundaries have been studied. Using the same interpolation functions for the pressure distribution and the displacement the two domains have been coupled and using Hamilton principle the solution of the hydroelastic have been obtained through the direct minimizing process. It has become evident that the finite-boundary element method combining with the eigenfunction or the image-function method give good results in comparison with the experimental ones and the other numerical results by the finite element method.
The effect of the scan velocity modulation is studied. The effect of the velocity modulation on the picture image is judged from the intensity profile of the image. The intensity profile is obtained as time integral of moving Gaussian beam. To confirm the applicability of this integral formula, the measurement and simulation data is compared. And by calculating the intensity profile for different amounts of velocity modulation, the optimum modulation displacement that gives the best image quality is obtained. This optimum modulation displacement can be used in designing scan velocity modulation system.
We propose the use of synchronously moving micro-optics (lenslet arrays) for image pickup and display in three-dimensional integral imaging to overcome the upper resolution limit imposed by the Nyquist sampling theorem. With the proposed technique, we present an all-optical three-dimensional integral imaging projector. An optically addressed spatial light modulator is used, which potentially provides better image resolution than the conventional CCD and liquid crystal display pair. We present experimental results using a liquid crystal light valve.

In this paper, we propose a modified smart pixel mapping (SPM) to visualize occluded three-dimensional (3D) objects in real image fields. In integral imaging, orthoscopic real 3D images cannot be displayed because of lenslets and the converging light field from elemental images. Thus, pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic conversion which rotates each elemental image by 180 degree, has been proposed so that the orthoscopic virtual 3D image can be displayed. However, the orthoscopic real 3D image cannot be displayed. Hence, a conventional SPM that recaptures elemental images for the orthoscopic real 3D image using virtual pinhole array has been reported. However, it has a critical limitation in that the number of pixels for each elemental image is equal to the number of elemental images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a modified SPM that can solve this critical limitation in a conventional SPM and can also visualize the occluded objects efficiently.
In the protein macro array image, it is important to find out the feature of the each protein chip. A decision error by the personal sense of sight occurred from long time observation while making an experiment in many protein chip image. So the feature extraction is needed by a simulator. In the case of feature analysis for macro array scan image the efficiency is maximized. In the fluorescence scan image, the response for each cell have been depend on R, G, B distribution of color image. But it is difficult to be classified as one color feature in the case of mixed color image. In this paper, the response color of a protein chip is classified according to the fuzzy integral value with respect to fuzzy measure as the user desired color. The result of the experiment for the macro array fluorescence image with the Scan Array 5000 shows that the proposed method using the fuzzy integral is important fact to be make decision for the ambiguous color.

This paper proposes an effective compression method to utilize the 3D integral image with large amount of data obtained by a lens array in various applications. The conventional compression methods for still images exhibit low performance in terms of coding efficiency and visual quality, since they cannot remove the correlation between elemental images. In the moving picture compression methods, 1D scanning techniques that produce a sequence of elemental images are not enough to remove the directional correlation between elemental images. The proposed method effectively sequences the elemental images from an integral image by the 2D referencing technique and compresses them using the multi-frame referencing of H.264/AVC. The proposed 2D referencing technique selects the optimal reference image according to vertical, horizontal, and diagonal correlation between elemental images. Experimental results show that compression with the sequence of elemental images presents better coding efficiency than that of still image compression. Moreover, the proposed 2D referencing technique is superior to the 1D scanning methods in terms of the objective performance and visual quality.
In this paper, we present an interference problem among elemental images in computational integral imaging reconstruction. To overcome the interference problem, we propose a method to calculate a minimum magnification factor and the preliminary experiments are performed.
