In this research. the diesel cycle was thermodynamically interpreted to evaluate the possibility of high efficiency by converting diesel engines to the high expansion diesel cycle, and general cycle features were analyzed after comparing these two cycles. Based on these analyses. an experimental single cylinder a long stroke with high expansion-diesel engine. of which S/B ratio was more than 3, was manufactured. After evaluating the base engine through basic experiments, a diesel engine was converted into the high expansion diesel engine by establish VCR device and VVT system Accordingly, the high expansion diesel cycle can be implemented when the quantity of intake air is compensated by supercharge and the effective compression ratio is maintained at its initial level through the reduction of the clearance volume. In this case, heat efficiency increased by $5.0\%$ at the same expansion-compression ratio when the apparent compression ratio was 20 and the fuel cut off ratio was 2. As explained above, when the atkinson cycle was used for diesel cycle, heat efficiency was improved. In order to realize high expansion through retarding the intake value closing time, the engine needs to be equipped with variable valve timing equipment, variable compression ratio equipment and supercharged pressure equipment. Then a high expansion diesel cycle engine is realized.

Recently, the efforts to improve fuel economy and to reduce pollutant emission have become the main subject in the development of a gasoline engine. A lean combustion engine admitted as the best alternative is relatively lower fuel consumption rate and exhaust emissions. In this study, it is focused on intensifying intake flow field as one of methods to improve the performance of the lean combustion. First, three different types of suitable swirl control valve(SC7) with high swirl and tumble ratio are selected through steady flow experiment, being installed in a spark ignition engine. The relationship between lean misfire limit and torque was investigated with injection timing and spark ignition timing. Also, the effect of intensified swirl new on the combustion Stability and exhaust emissions was experimently examined by the measuring in-cylinder pressure and combustion variation. The results show that the engine with swirl control calve is superior to other conventional engine on the lean misfire limit, specific torque, combustion variation and emission, and the appropriate injection timing and spark ignition timing exist according to the type of swirl control valve.

A swirl ratio of a charge in the cylinder could be calculated by measuring both the rotary speed of paddle and the intake air flow rate in the swirl measurement apparatus fur several positions of valve lift. The automation of the swirl ratio measurement for a cylinder head is achieved by controlling both the valve lift of cylinder head and a suction pressure of the surge tank, instead of controlling them manually. PID control of the surge tank pressure and positioning a valve lift of the cylinder head are also achieved by using two step motors, respectively. Rotating speed of a paddle are measured using an optical sensor and a counter. Flow rate are measured from ISA 1932 flow nozzle by reading a differential pressure gauge position using IEEE-1394 camera. Time to measure the swirl ratio for a port in the cylinder head is drastically reduced from an hour to 3 minutes by automation control of the apparatus.

Miller timing is one of the promising ways which can improve the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines. Indeed, Miller timing employing an early intake valve close is widely applied to large diesel and gas engines to enhance performance and reduce NOx emissions. In this study, performance evaluation is carried out by 1-D cycle simulation in order to estimate the effect of Miller CAM timing before BDC for a 32 L turbocharged diesel engine. To optimize Miller CAM timing, a single stage turbocharger is matched with an early intake valve close since boost pressure is a significant parameter that can control compression work in a turbocharged engine. The engine simulation result shows that there is enough potential to improve fuel consumption rate and also reduce NOx emissions at the same time.Abstract here.

In this paper we present the effects that valve train design parameters and operating conditions have on the valve rotation properties of a diesel engine. Rotation of intake and exhaust valves are very closely related to the long term durability of diesel engines. of the valves do not rotate even at a rated engine speed, it causes the uneven wear of the valve seat and valve head contact area, which eventually shortens the engine life. Because the rated speed of a diesel engine is relatively lower than that of a gasoline engine, the operating condition of a diesel engine produces tough environment for valve rotation. Therefore, the valve rotation is an important problem which should be solved in the early stage of engine development. In this study, we developed a new technique to measure the valve rotation and shaking motion simultaneously using three proximity sensors. Valve train rotating properties of a diesel engine were measured under various engine operating conditions.

Miller cycle is considered as an effective means to meet the regulation on Tier II and to reduce $CO_2$ emission. For this cycle, the amount of intake air supplied should be enough increased. Therefore, the intake system with minimized resistance for air flow is under consideration. In this study, the flow coefficients of intake valves were measured in order to obtain the basic data for the cycle simulation and intake port design. The flow coefficients were measured using the steady-flow test rig. As a test result for the poppet valve used the marine engine with medium speed, the flow coefficients are increased to about 0.62 with the valve lift. In addition it is confirmed that the flow coefficients have the characteristic value irrelevant to the S/B ratio.
The flow field in a cylinder of a 4-valve pentroof engine is studied using the KIVA-3V code. Turbulence is generated from the jet flow through valves and broken down to the small scale eddies in the compression process. It is known that the tumble effectively keeps turbulence during the compression process. In the combustion process, turbulence is known to enhance flame speed by increasing mass, momentum and heat transfer rates. The effects of the intake port angles on the flow and combustion characteristics are studied in this study. To study the effect of turbulence on the combustion process, Cantore combustion model is applied in this study.
The in-cylinder flow field of gasoline engine comprises unsteady compressible turbulent flows caused by the intake port, combustion chamber geometry. Thus, the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder flow characteristics plays an important role in the improvement of engine performances and the reduction of exhaust emission. In order to obtain the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder gas flows for a gasoline engine, the single-frame particle tracking velocimetry was developed, which is designed to measure 2-dimensional gas flow field. In this paper, influences of the swirl and tumble intensifying valves on the in-cylinder flow characteristics under the various intake flow conditions were investigated by using this PTV method. Based on the results of experiment, the generation process of swirl and tumble flow in a cylinder during intake stroke was clarified. Its effect on the tumble ratio at the end of compression stroke was also investigated.

This study is to consider that the helical intake port flow and fuel injection system have effects on the characteristics of engine performance and emissions in a turbocharged DI diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L. The swirl ratio for ports was modified by hand-working and measured by impulse torque swirl meter, For the effects on performance and emission, the brake torque, BSFC were measured by engine dynamometer and NOx, smoke were by gas analyzer and smoke meter. As a result of steady flow test, when the valve eccentricity ratio are closed to cylinder wall, the flow coefficient and swirl intensity are increased, And as the swirl is increased, the mean flow coefficient is decreasing, whereas the gulf factor is increasing. Also, through engine test its can be expected to meet performance and emission by the following applied parameter; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC $13^{\circ}$CA and compression is 15.5.

Gas flow field within the cylinder which is called a tumble flow is important factor in improving lean combustion stability. In this study, steady state flow tests were performed to quantify tumble ratio of flowfields generated by a tumble intensifying valve(TIV). In addition, velocity and fluctuation profiles in an intake port and flowfields in th cylinder were inspected using a hotwire anemometer and a laser light sheet method with various TIV configurations. These experimental results show that installated TIV has a great effect on flow field distribution in an intake port and test effects enhance a tumble flow in the cylinder.
