  • At the moment, the section insulators for different phases used for over head contact wire system has been all imported since its first application. However, because the section insulators need frequent maintenance and replacement due to the wear by the friction with pantograph and the contamination, which causes its life shorter than as expected, it is required to develop the insulation material with better wear-resistance characteristics and contamination-resistance characteristics. In this thesis, the author developed the section insulator which adopts Teflon tube insulation material which is composed of the Teflon material with the excellent electrical characteristics and wear-resistance characteristics for a longer expected life than that made of conventional FRP.

  • In this study, we have investigated the effects of space charge on the conduction current with the variation of applied time of electric field in polymer insulators. We had also improved the PEA method, and then we could measure a simultaneously the space charge and the conduction current in insulators under the DC electric field. From this experiment, we have known the variation of conduction current due to the existence of space charge in XLPE1 and XLPE2.

  • To prevent an insulator failure, a new inspection system is presented for 154kV insulator strings. The inspection system detects fault insulators by measuring resistance and voltage of each insulators in the 154kV insulator string. The inspection instrument obtains autonomously insulation resistance and assigned voltage along the insulator string. The insulator inspection instrument is manipulated by two operators. In addition, a set of mechanism is applied to prevent the system from being reset under live-line condition. We confirmed its effectiveness through experiments.

  • In this paper, there analyzed the UV behavior and detection images due to corona discharge of insulators at 22.9kV. As the results, the shapes of UV detection images are jellyfish, sunflower, and amoeba type. Generally, the jellyfish and sunflower type appeared in air discharge. In surface discharge, Amoeba is generated. Also, there are classified 8 patterns such as sunflower A or B, jellyfish A or B, amoeba A, B, C, D. This method of the facilities assessment has an immediate effect in the field.

  • Polymers have good electrical properties as an insulation material. Though they show more and less poor resistance to heat, radiation, and oxygen, the poor properties have been overcame by developing new resin with the saturated molecular structure and compounding resin with resistive fillers. Polymer insulators have many advantages; light weight, good mechanical properties, better contaimination performance, low cost by mass productivity, no destruction in many pieces, good flexibility in design, short manufacturing time. Usage of polymer insulators has increased rapidly with good credit on long term properties in advanced nations and will continue to grow.

  • A new live-line insulator tester was developed to detect faulty insulators in 154kV power transmission lines. This paper is the second part of the two-part paper and deals with its inspection algorithm development. Unlike normal condition with low pollution and low humidity, the inspection data measured in the field under high pollution or high humidity showed that the voltage distribution of an insulator string has offsets in comparison with those of others and its insulation resistances are greatly decreased, which leads to wrong results of the existing inspection algorithms under such conditions. To solve this problem, we propose new diagnosis algorithms that can exactly detect faulty insulators from measured data regardless of environmental conditions. Its effectiveness was validated by live-line field tests in actual power lines.

  • For detecting of the faulty insulator, Correlation Propagation Neural Networks(CPNN) has been proposed. Faulty insulator is reduced the rate of insulation extremely, and taken the results dirty and injured. It is necessary to detect the faulty insulator and exchange the new one. And thus, we have designed the CPNN to be detected that insulators by the real time computation method through the inter-node diffusion. In the network, a node corresponds to a state in the quantized input space. Each node is composed of a processing unit and fixed weights from its neighbor nodes as well as its input terminal. Information propagates among neighbor nodes laterally and inter-node interpolation is achieved. 1-D CPNN hardware has been implemented with general purpose. Experiments with static and dynamic signals have been done upon the CPNN hardware. Through the results of simulation experiments, we define the ability of real-time detecting the faulty insulators.

  • Recently, with the rapid growth of industry, environmental condition became worse. In addition to outdoor insulators in seashore are polluted due to salty wind. Also this pollution causes the flashover and failure of electric equipments. Especially the salt contaminant is one of the most representative pollutants, and known as the main source of the accident by contamination. As well known, the pollution has a close relation with meteorological factors such as wind velocity, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity, precipitation and so on. In this paper we have statistically analyzed the correlation between the pollution and the meteorological factors. The multiple regression analysis was used for the statistical analysis; daily measured equivalent salt deposit density(dependent variable) and the weather condition data(independent variable) were used. Also we have developed an expert program to predict the pollution deposit. A new prediction system using this program called SPPP(salt pollution prediction program) has been used to model accurately the relationship between ESDD with the meteorological factors.

  • Composite insulators are rapidly replacing their porcelain counterparts in electrical substation applications. The composite insulator provide technical and safety ad vantages over other types of insulator. These insulators consist of a FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer), with two metal flanges and silicone rubber. In this paper, we have investigated the influence of electric field different shaped silicone shed under $SF_6$ gas. As a result, shape of silicone rubber does not effected a electric field. However, the shape of shed can be decided the creepage distance.

Characteristics of Insulation Degradation in Epoxy Mold Type BCT (에폭시 몰드형 BCT의 절연열화 특성)

  • Various stresses (such as electrical stress, mechanical stress, environmental and electrochemical stress, and defects of structure) result in insulation degradation of epoxy mold type insulators. Since the insulation degradation of BCT(Bushing Current Transformer) and bushing proceeds during fabrication process or operation time due to these causes, various methods to reduce the degradation in their insulation ability have been suggested. In this paper, we investigated surface temperature increment of these insulators due to PD(partial discharge). After the voltage applied into the insulator to generate the artificial PD, the surface temperature of the insulator was measured with non-contact thermometer using infrared rays. It was confirmed through the analysis based on PD experiments that the procession in the insulation degradation of the insulator could be estimated through the measurement of the surface temperature in the insulator.
