  • Quality of the power system depends upon the reliability of its components such as transformer, transmission lines, insulators, circuit breakers and isolators. The transient voltage due to internal or external reasons may affect the insulation level of the components. The insulation level of these components must be tested against these conditions. Different studies, testing of different electrical components against high voltage impulses and different industrial applications rely on the international manufactures for pulsed power generation and testing, that is quite expensive and large in size. In this paper a model of impulse voltage generator with capacitive load of pin type insulator is studied by simulation method and by an experimental setup. A ten stage high voltage impulse generator (HVIG) is designed and implemented for different applications. In this proposed model, the cost has been reduced by using small and cheap capacitors as an alternative for large and expensive ones while achieving the same effectiveness. Effect of the distributed capacitance in each stage is analyzed to prove the effectiveness of the model. Different values of front and tail resistances have been used to get IEC standard waveforms. Results reveal the effectiveness at reduced cost of the proposed model.

  • To reduce the maintenance expense and the possibility of electric outage and/or accident, which causes the decrease in stability and reliability of transmission/distribution line, most of all, accurate measurement for the degree of contamination should be preceded. But the conventional method (brush wiping method), which is recommended in IEC 60815, has sow significant problem in the aspect of man power, expense, error, and so forth. In this investigation, we purpose the development of a new type automatic measuring apparatus, which could measure the degree of contamination on the surface of insulator in outdoor condition. To design and evaluate the apparatus, a FLUX 2D is used, and various laboratory tests, artificial contamination tests, were carried to proof the actual performance. With the result of these effort, we can get the meaningful conclusion to develope a new type automatic apparatus for contamination measurement.

  • For practical electrical insulation design of high temperature superconducting (HTS) power apparatuses, knowledge of the dielectric behavior of insulators in cryogenic liquid such as liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is essential. So in this paper, we discussed experimental investigations of breakdown and V-t characteristics of several insulators such as Kapton and glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) that are candidates of insulator for HTS apparatus in cryogenic liquid. And we investigated the degradation of these insulation samples after breakdown with the microscope and SEM photograph. Moreover, survival and hazard analysis were performed.

  • The electrical-impedance method has been widely used for void-fraction measurement in two-phase flow due to its many favorable features. In the impedance method, the response characteristics of the electrical signal heavily depend upon flow pattern, as well as phasic volume. Thus, information on the flow pattern should be given for reliable void-fraction measurement. This study proposes an improved electrical-conductance sensor composed of a three-electrode set of adjacent and opposite electrodes. In the proposed sensor, conductance readings are directly converted into the flow pattern through a specified criterion and are consecutively used to estimate the corresponding void fraction. Since the flow pattern and the void fraction are evaluated by reading conductance measurements, complexity of data processing can be significantly reduced and real-time information provided. Before actual applications, several numerical calculations are performed to optimize electrode and insulator sizes, and optimal design is verified by static experiments. Finally, the proposed sensor is applied for air-water two-phase flow in a horizontal loop with a 40-mm inner diameter and a 5-m length, and its measurement results are compared with those of a wire-mesh sensor.

  • This paper deals with the seismic qualification of the reflective metal insulation for thermal shielding that is installed on the outer surfaces of the main equipment of the primary coolant system of a nuclear power plant. A small-scale model of the reactor pressure vessel, which has equivalent dynamic characteristics, was designed to be tested in domestic seismic testing facilities in the future. In this study, seismic analysis of the small-scale model installed with metal insulation was performed using equivalent static analysis and response spectrum analysis. The required Response Spectrum for main equipment of the primary coolant system of APR-1400 plant were considered to establish the enveloping response spectrum, which was applied to the seismic analysis model. The results from two seismic analysis methods were compared to show the structural adequacy of the metal insulator design against a safe shutdown earthquake. This study will form the basis for the seismic testing to support the seismic qualification of the reflective metal insulator.

  • [ $9\%$ ] nickel steel LNG storage tank have double containments that can store cryogenic LNG independently. Inner tank material is used as $9\%$ nickel steel and outer tank is constructed by concrete. Comer protection which is installed on inner surface of concrete corner is consist of $9\%$ nickel steel liner and form glass insulator that make reduce tension at corner when LNG is leaked from inner tank. It is very difficult to design corner protection because expansion and contraction of liner make stress state complex. Corner protections of operating tank in KOGAS are designed by Japanese engineering company such as TKK, KHI and England company of WHESSOE. This paper is mainly focused on the integrity comparison of them according to requirements of Appendix 4 in ASME Section VIII Div. 2 by using FEM.

  • Acoustic load generated by rocket propulsion system is one of major dynamic loads during lift-off phase so that it causes the structural failure and electronic malfunction of payloads. Acoustic loads can be greatly reduced by an appropriate acoustical design of nose faring structures. This paper deals with the acoustical design of the nose fairing structure for launch vehicle. It is well known that a honeycomb sandwich structure is a poor sound insulator because of its high specific stiffness. In this paper, the sound transmission characteristics of four kinds of honeycomb structures for noise fairing were investigated by means of numerical and experimental ways. In order to estimate transmission loss, infinite plate theory by Moore and Lyon and statistical energy analysis (SEA) method were used. The predicted results showed a good agreement with measured ones. These enabled us to determine a proper core material for nose fairing, which shows good sound insulation performance per weight.

  • The powder core, conventionally fabricated from iron particles coated with insulator, showed large eddy current loss under high frequency, because of small specific resistance. To overcome the eddy current loss, the increase in the specific resistance of powder cores was needed. In this study, copper oxide coating onto electrically conductive iron particles was performed using a planetary ball mill to increase the specific resistance. Coating factors were optimized by the Response surface methodology. The independent variables were the CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, coating time, ball size, ball mass and sample mass. The response variable was the specific resistance. The optimization of six factors by the fractional factorial design indicated that CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were the key factors. The levels of these three factors were selected by the three-factors full factorial design and steepest ascent method. The steepest ascent method was used to approach the optimum range for maximum specific resistance. The Box-Behnken design was finally used to analyze the response surfaces of the screened factors for further optimization. The results of the Box-Behnken design showed that the CuO mass fraction and mill revolution number were the main factors affecting the efficiency of coating process. As the CuO mass fraction increased, the specific resistance increased. In contrast, the specific resistance increased with decreasing mill revolution number. The process optimization results revealed a high agreement between the experimental and the predicted data ($Adj-R^2=0.944$). The optimized CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were 0.4, 200 rpm, and 15 min, respectively. The measured value of the specific resistance of the coated pellet under the optimized conditions of the maximum specific resistance was $530k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

  • In this study, alternative designs for the bends used in district heating pipes are investigated. The district heating pipes, which are subjected to temperatures of 10 to $120^{\circ}C$ and a water pressure of $16\;kgf/cm^2$, have to withstand thermomechanical cyclic loads when in use. These pipes comprise three concentric tubes: a steel pipe (internal), polyurethane (PUR) insulator (middle), and a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) case (external). In addition, the bends in the district heating pipe system are covered with foam pads that cause aging. In this study, an alternative bend design that does not involve the use of a foam pad is proposed to overcome the aging problem in the bends. In the proposed design, "shear rings" are added to the surface of a bend, and its dimensions are determined by a combination of the statistical (Taguchi) method and FEM. The geometrical parameters such as thickness, height, and number of the rings significantly affect the design optimization, and hence, they affect the results of the FEM.

  • There are many fish farms being cultivated in the southwestern cost of South Korea. Because the farms cultivating use the basic method that inflow and circulate sea-water, slight negligence and bad design cause major negative impact on fish deaths. Also, the optimal temperature for each specie of fishes has already been proven to differ on each specie. Maintaining this environment, regardless of seasons, is very difficult and that requires research to develop. In this paper, basic characteristics of heat and mechanism of heat transfer are studied. Based on this, Open-end water vessel is designed and constructed using sandwich-insulation panels and simulated to store the heat in certain isolated space. This study confirmed that it is possible to keep constant temperature by this method, in large areas of water where it is insulated by heat insulator. and equipped with heater in Open-end water vessel where the other part is heated. The AC power controller maintains the constant temperature required and the temperature controller detects and displays the temperature by using the micro-processor.
