  • The need for zero-energy building is increasing as a means of actively responding to climate change. Since pipe insulation is a factor that minimizes heat loss of cooling and heating facilities, it is necessary to check pipe insulation standards and prepare improvement plans of preparation for certification of zero energy buildings. In this study, domestic pipe insulation standards were checked to prepare new insulation standards based on energy performance. Through the development of a pipe insulation calculation program, the heat loss according to the insulation thickness of the piping for mechanical facilities was compared and reviewed. As a result, applying the insulation thickness of the KCS standard for the same conditions increased the heat loss by an average of 10% compared to the ASHRAE standard. For this reason, it is necessary to revise the pipe insulation thickness standard in consideration of heat loss due to thermal conductivity and pipe insulation thickness. Using the program in this paper, it is possible to design pipe insulation based on energy performance and help to determine the standard for pipe insulation thickness.

  • Cryogenic insulation systems, with proper materials selection and execution, can offer the highest levels of thermal performance. Insulations are listed in order of increasing performance and, generally, in order of increasing cost. The specific insulation to be used for a particular application is determined through a compromise between cost, ease of application and the effectiveness of the insulation. Consequently, materials, representative test conditions, and engineering approach for the particular application are crucial to achieve the optimum result. The present work is based on energy cost balance for optimizing the thickness of insulated chambers, using foamed or multi layered cryogenic shell. The considered insulation is a uniformly applied outer layer whose thickness varies with the initial and boundary conditions of the studied vessel under steady-state radial heat transfer. An expression of the optimal insulation thickness derived from the total cost function and depending on the geometrical parameters of the container is presented.

  • This study aims to find out the optimized insulation thickness of refrigerated warehouse with different envelope structures (RC and PC wall) and insulation materials (urethane and icynene). Each of them is compared according to the thickness of insulation (100, 150, 200 mm/50 or 250 mm) and the temperature of cold storage room (0, -6, -15$^{\circ}C$). As results, it is proved to have the best economical efficiency in life cycle cost when PC wall with thickness of 100 mm (0 and -6$^{\circ}C$) and 150 m (-15$^{\circ}C$) urethane, respectively, are applied.

  • This paper reported a study on the thermal, mechanical and electrical insulation properties of epoxy/mica composites. To investigate the effect of mica content, glass transition temperature, mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strength, and insulation breakdown properties for epoxy composites with various contents of mica. The effect of insulation thickness on insulation breakdown property was also studied. It was observed that tensile and flexural strength decreased with increasing mica content, while elastic modulus increased as the mica content increased. AC insulation breakdown strength for all epoxy/mica composites was higher than that of neat epoxy and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was 14.4% improved. As was expected, insulation breakdown strength at $30^{\circ}C$ was far higher than that at $130^{\circ}C$, and it was also found that insulation breakdown strength was inversely proportion to insulation thickness.

  • Optimization for the insulation thickness and external shape of a household refrigerator is peformed in order to minimize thermal load through the insulation wall. The one dimensional conduction heat transfer model is adopted to calculate thermal load. Calculus of variation is employed to optimize the thickness and shape of refrigerator or freezer. The uniform distribution of an insulation thickness and cubed external shape make thermal load minimize. Finally, by using both of the computational and experimental method, the thermal load is minimized for a refrigerator/freezer. It is shown that there exists optimal thickness of insulation walls and external shape for given the external cabinet dimensions and freezer and refrigerator internal volumes, Also, the analytical results are well agreed with the experimental results.

  • By strengthening the insulation performance of a building, a great deal of energy can be saved and a comfortable indoor environment can be offered to people. On the other hand, the climate, which has a great influence on the indoor environment, is changed by global warming. Therefore, in planning building envelope structure and design, climate change should be considered. In this paper, the optimal insulation thickness of exterior walls was calculated by an economic assessment method using heating degree-days. Additionally, how much influence climate change has on planning building insulation was investigated. The examination showed that heating degree-days have decreased by about 10% due to climate change in the past few decades. It was also shown that the optimal insulation thickness of exterior walls was thin, at about 6%, in three representative Korean cities (Seoul, Daejeon, Jeju).

  • Recently, It has increased the importance of building energy saving. Pipe insulation as well as building envelope insulation is to improve energy efficiency and reduce the energy loss. However, there continues to use the old standard for pipe insulation that is one of the most important elements in energy savings in buildings. The purpose of this study is to propose suitable pipe insulation thickness for reducing building energy use. The study also reviews pipe insulation thickness standard in accordance to Korea standard, ASHRAE 90.1 and BS5422 and analyzed through thermal simulation. As a result, it is necessary to apply the performance design method of the pipe insulation thickness to reduce the energy loss of the piping.

  • This study investigates on the relationship between total load which is caused by infiltration and insulation thickness against compensation effect. As the result of experiment, the PVC(Synthetic resins sash) window frame in airtightness is superior to the AL(Aluminum sash) window frame. In this study, as the increasing of insulation thickness in reference building does not reduce significantly cooling load, the compensation effect due to airtightness against infiltration is very small. But the compensation effect against infiltration can be closely related with heating load. Therefore, the proper thermal insulation thickness can be needed respect to cooling and heating load.

  • For the insulation design of a high temperature superconducting(HTS) cable, three kinds of design method were proposed, which used AC and impulse withstand voltage and partial discharge inception strength. However, the designed insulation thickness by AC and impulse could not be applied to cable fabrication process due to much low electrical breakdown strength. The effect of the multi-layered insulation paper was not considered on the previous insulation design and the insulation thickness by partial discharge inception strength could be applied only. In this paper, the electrical breakdown characteristic, which considered the effect of multi-layered of LPP, was investigated to design the insulation thickness.

  • $SF_6$ gas used widely as insulating component in electric power industry has excellent in insulation and arc extinguishing performance in gas-insulated switchgear. However, the concern about eco-friendly alternative gas is currently rising, because $SF_6$ gas is one of the main greenhouse gases. As one of the study for $SF_6$ free technology, composite-insulation technology is focused in this paper. To analyze the influence by epoxy thickness change, the composite-insulation composed of dry-air and epoxy was used in this paper. To analyze AC breakdown by the epoxy thickness, needle-plane electrode was used and needle was molded by epoxy. Under the gas pressure ranged from 0.1 to 0.6MPa, the breakdown voltage of dry-air were measured in AC electric field. The data of composite-insulation were acquired by changing the thickness of epoxy used in each composite-insulation under the same condition.
